As much as I’d like to see it happen next I’ll believe this when I see it. So they just recently changed it for the 13 for only one cycle? Knowing Apple they will delay a change this big until 2023. They would juice this current model for another year.

I wonder why Apple has reengineered the notch on iPhone 13 to make it smaller, to finally get rid of it only a year later. Not complaining at all if it’s true, but I find it strange

I'm with you on this. If this is legit, then maybe the pill is reserved for the Pro models.

Sounds good.

I’ll say as a recent iPhone convert, I really don’t love FaceID. I thought I would but it fails in too many scenarios for me (or is just not usable). TouchID under the display (assuming they could find a method that worked well) would be much preferred.

But I’m still hopeful that a pill hole punch would allow space for the battery percentage!

The leakers have only said the notch is going away for the Pro models. Apple gets to keep milking last year's smaller notch with the non Pro models.

Pill shape makes sense, I have said all along Apple will not use a pinhole design since that is an Android feature (flaw) and Apple needs to retain a unique and iconic look for the iPhone. Everyone knows the notch means it's an iPhone, the pill shape will serve this same function.
Uhhh, there are multiple Android devices that use a pill shaped cutout. Also, how is a pinhole a flaw?

Apple's notch isn't "iconic", it's stupid at this point.

Realistically, what's the advantage of a cutout over a notch? That space above the cutout is worthless and would be even more distracting with movies, etc.
Any notch is more distracting when watching movies than the old top and bottom bezels yet here we are. Let them get rid of the ugly notch already. Hopefully we'll have a true edge to edge display in the next 5 years.

For best camera quality, it's always going to be either thick bezel, notch or punch hole/pill. Choose your poison.

“The notch is a non issue” claim the Apple faithful. If so, why would Apl spend untold millions of dollars in R&D and new hardware to get rid of it?

Apparently they hate it just as much as the general public haters do too
Same loud mouth fan boys in the comment section talking about how amazing this hole punch in. Scroll down 12 months they’re the same folks saying they love the notch and hate android hole punches. It’s almost nauseating

You obviously do not know what iconic means. If the notch is stupid then why are even news broadcasts including the same notch in the top of their screens - stupid I think not. Also, the pinhole looks like a giant flaw in the screen - a large area of dead pixels -i.e. a flawed design. Apple will make sure the pill, or whatever the design is, will be truly identifiable as being an iPhone, these guys have been brilliant marketers for decades.

I’d love to see this, but please include TouchID as a second authentication method - either inscreen or in the power button.
The rumor was years ago, that Apple was experimenting with touch ID under the display, but couldn’t ‘perfect’ the technology the way they wanted to, and Face-ID became the new dominant source of security.

I suspect Apple probably won’t offer both biometric security options on the same device with a touch ID sensor and face ID module. Apple just appears to be the type of company that wants to invest in one specific biometric on their ‘primary phones, which would be face ID. I think there is still untapped potential here, before they move on to something away from Face ID.

It's not a pill, it is the new and innovative "slimmest, lightest and most powerful notch ever".

I don't think the notch is going anywhere any time soon. They wouldn't add one to their flagship laptops only to remove them from their flagship phones the next year. It's obviously a design choice they've made for their brand.

Why a pill and not a smaller notch, the same width as this pill?

With the pill, you’ve got wasted pixels above it, making this essentially a tall notch for no reason.
...so they can add yet another ill-conceived swipe thingie located just in that tiny pill gap!

Just bring under the screen fingerprint Touch ID, please.

Also, Bring this design to the iPhone. End of iPhone 14. Next!

It’s easy to cram features into a small space when you’re making an imaginary design in a graphic. Often it’s much harder or physically impossible to actually implement with current hardware technologies. Remember all the outlandish iPhone 5 concept designs that was all the rage 10 years ago? Yeah most of those “features” are still not here today.

By that logic they “hated” the home button, and Touch ID for that matter. I bet they really despised the stems on the original AirPods. I can’t even imagine the sick distain they must have felt for the lightning connector system they spent years developing and are finally now kicking to the curb.

Every time apple improves or replaces a feature or physical aspect of their products it’s out of sheer hatred for what it’s replaced.

At this pint wouldn't it make more sense to raise the pill shaped cutout towards the edge of the screen, essentially having a tiny pill shaped notch? I mean, what's the benefit of having the screen surround the area that still needs to be taken up by the sensors?
