actually in my situation waiting makes sense...it's a phone upgrade plan for my daughter's 8+. She's finishing her senior year of high school, so sometime between now and college she gets an upgrade (and hopefully the last phone I ever have to buy her). And given she is planning to study photojournalism, the 13Pro (or Max) would be a great tool to have in college. But she certainly doesn't need it NOW.
Hope your daughter becomes a professional photographer

Pill shape makes sense, I have said all along Apple will not use a pinhole design since that is an Android feature (flaw) and Apple needs to retain a unique and iconic look for the iPhone. Everyone knows the notch means it's an iPhone, the pill shape will serve this same function.
I agree. And in my opinion (casting my brand loyalty aside), the pill shape looks infinitely better than a circular hole punch - which just looks tacky, anonymous, displaced and silly.

You obviously do not know what iconic means. If the notch is stupid then why are even news broadcasts including the same notch in the top of their screens - stupid I think not. Also, the pinhole looks like a giant flaw in the screen - a large area of dead pixels -i.e. a flawed design. Apple will make sure the pill, or whatever the design is, will be truly identifiable as being an iPhone, these guys have been brilliant marketers for decades.
Other manufacturers have used the notch as well, soooo....

Yes, the Apple hype train is real. They have the best marketing people, but that doesn't necessarily mean they make the best products.

Leaker here, leaker there, hole-punch everywhere.
I'm grateful for the supposed change, I just want under-screen Touch ID.

This is way better than a punch hole. There’s something so cheap about the punch hole, it’s very Xiomi/Huwaiwi. No doubt it doesn’t work properly on those plasticy phones too LOL

So it's not really under the display? ?
The pill shape is cut out of the LCD display. It works just like the notch, but the notch doesn't extend to the top of the display. Apple will likely move to under LCD display Face ID once the LCD no longer degrades camera image quality and doesnt interfere with the Face ID sensors.

This is awesome!

I’m glad that the front facing camera is going to be built into the screen and take up less space on this year’s iPhone

That will allow Apple to put more useful information in the status bar on the top of the iPhone

I’m definitely planning on getting the iPhone 14 once it’s released this September
Chances are the camera and microphone green dot indicator along with info about it was recently used or accessed will fit nicely in-between the OLED screen space for the microphone and pill shaped camera housing.

Why would anyone on this forum believe that Apple would not have better use for this screen space.

In a future generation MacBook lineup the notch will be replaced with similar pill shaped benefits.

Pin this post and watch what happens.

Just bring under the screen fingerprint Touch ID, please.

Also, Bring this design to the iPhone. End of iPhone 14. Next!

The camera indicator (green dot) is in the incorrect location, it will be relocated between the pill shaped cutout and speaker grill, cheers.

I want the option for a simile length home indicator bar or even to remove it completely at this point.

Face ID consists of emitters and sensors. This rumor does not contain enough detail to know of all of those components are under screen or only some.
I believe this will function or work between the pixels. The pill cutout will possibly have a dual camera setup or an ultra wide for CenterStage. I am curious when the camera will be complete darkened as Apple has a patent on that.

There’s no way. Apple will do that. They could have done that last year but instead they made the notch smaller.
There is a reason why Apple lowered the power button and volume controls on the iPhone 13/Pro, it aligns where one might rest a thumb while holding the device. ?

To be fair I'll kinda miss the notch.
As senseless as it might seem, at least it made the design recognisable and I think it looks better than a hole punch.
I hope Apple will still be able to employ a distinctive design.
We'll see.
Until Apple announces and shows it during the keynote and then this post and your sentiment will be buried in the dark corners of the internet ?

MR has heard your type of comments and post similar to this before, it does not age well.

Or a single ultra wide for CenterStage.

Possible, but an ultra wide lens causes distortion, so I doubt the front will have only a UW lens. Same reason why MacBook Pro doesn't have Center Stage.

“The notch is a non issue” claim the Apple faithful. If so, why would Apl spend untold millions of dollars in R&D and new hardware to get rid of it?

Apparently they hate it just as much as the general public haters do too
Hate; such a strong word. I don’t believe most of the general public align with your comments. It literally fades when in use, would it be nice if it shrunk, sure as we have seen similar with bezels on laptops, monitors, tablets and phones.

If it’s distracting to you, there are other options such as iPhone SE 2nd Gen and Android.

Distortion correction. The 2021 MBP seems to have a place holder for many future incorporations, it’s not a mistake. All we know is that the iPad lineup all received it and it may very well be the iPhone’s turn next. The consumer friendly MBA 2022 may receive it as well and the iMac Pro 2022 is a coin toss.

After correcting for distortion, the resulting image is still less sharp compared to a regular lens. We see this on iPad Pro (2021), the 12MP selfie is grainer than 7MP iPad Pro (2020). This is because the image is digitally zoomed, cropped, and corrected. For iPhone, I don't think this will be acceptable.
