I wonder why Apple has reengineered the notch on iPhone 13 to make it smaller, to finally get rid of it only a year later. Not complaining at all if it’s true, but I find it strange

makes you wonder why they implemented a notch on macs just to drop the notch thing a year later
The pill's only rumoured for the Pro models. The non-Pro are rumoured to retain the altered iPhone 13 notch.

Notches are not the goal, they are means to increase screen size without making the case size larger and while allowing cameras and sensors. Apple was always going to reduce or remove the notches as soon as they could engineer components that didn't need the space. The laptop notch is that size because there are several other sensors in there besides just the camera. 1080p is adequate for a video conference camera where most software scales the video to 720p by default anyway. More resolution would require a deeper camera and lid.

Most of us got over the notch and are ignoring it now.
my point being that they could have gone with some sort of a pill

heck ,just look at the notch inside ,it's far too big for what's it's housing !.

either a smaller notch ,or even a pill, droplet ,whatever ,sth that would allow us to have the upper part usable when in Fullscreen mode ,cuz right now except maybe a FEW games, all apps put in Fullscreen lose the menu bar space by making the top black ....almost as big bezels as previous generation mbp13

I too am ignoring it as a notch thingy,in fact I even like it.but whenever I need screen real estate ,the fact that

1) menu bar is much thicker than previous regular MBA/mbp M1

and 2)going into Fullscreen makes u just lose the thick menu bar space by making it pure black....

well ,that is why I do mind the notch from a practical standpoint

Because technological innovation happens at the speed of quarterly financial results.

Personally, I am looking forward to the 14 coming out so the 13 becomes a much better deal.

if u already want the 13 badly, just grab it now ,second hand if you will

waiting a year just for maybe 100-200$ drop isn't such a good idea imo, especially since by then the deal won't be as good as you now think it is

I don't like the illuminated gap between the camera hole and top bezel.

I don't want the screen to look like there's a bug squashed to it.

I don't want to see a hole on a map.

I don't want to see a hole on a photo or movie screen.

I would prefer they move the camera hole to the very top of the bezel.

How is this any better than the notch? It obscures as much of the useable display as the notch does now.

How is this possibly anything even remotely exciting?

No, it appears to obscure much less of the screen. That area is already not used by normal app content.

That's a fantastic start. If only get could get the camera under the screen reliably to or some sort of dual pixel system with micro lenses so the screen itself can act as the camera.
Big if there, cos physics will always get in the way. Regardless of how good the algorithms you throw at it are, you have less light hitting an already small sensor. A small screen hole isn’t that distracting. Many will prefer the better picture, until selfie cameras become less important.

Not true if the pill is moved all the way up to the bezel to form a notch. There will be more useable screen.

touchID on the power button would be great in this pandemic time. No big ass bump on the camera in the mockup art is awesome.

Cool progress but to be fair, it doesn’t really matter if it’s a notch or a pill shaped hole as far as usability goes. There’s literally like 1-2mm of screen between a hole and the edge of the screen. There’s nothing useful you can put there, it’s pretty much a notch with ambi-light strip.

This. They can put it in the side power button like with the iPad Air
It’s fair adding TouchID, so long as it does not replace FaceID, or it works seemlessly even when wet, and is as secure as FaceID now.

I understand people wanting TouchID as an option, but for some, FaceID is infinitely better. If you live in a wet country like the UK, where people walk more than drive, and are constantly outdoors under the rain, you won’t want to return to the world of wiping your hand and screen dry before you can get in your phone.

If you really need the telephoto lens then the iPhone 15 will be perfect for you. I don’t see a big increase coming in the 14.
I'd love to shoot some videos with it in 2023. Wouldn't want to wait an other year. I'd also like to use prores.

We live in a world where COVID and it’s variants are a major issue. FaceID is completely useless in those instances. For the past two years with COVID and it’s variants it would be dishonest to say FaceID has been seemless or even practical. Reality is reality.

actually in my situation waiting makes sense...it's a phone upgrade plan for my daughter's 8+. She's finishing her senior year of high school, so sometime between now and college she gets an upgrade (and hopefully the last phone I ever have to buy her). And given she is planning to study photojournalism, the 13Pro (or Max) would be a great tool to have in college. But she certainly doesn't need it NOW.

And people would be complaining just as loudly about “the pill”. Because that’s what the Internet is about. The more trivial the annoyance, the louder people will complain. Nothing Apple can do will change that.

I'm not too sure if the technology is even out there for the HD camera under the screen display. What about all the other sensors? They are all going to be under the screen too. This reminds me of Series 7 Apple Watch rumor from last year ?
ZTE Axon? Samung Galaxy Z Fold 3?
