At this pint wouldn't it make more sense to raise the pill shaped cutout towards the edge of the screen, essentially having a tiny pill shaped notch? I mean, what's the benefit of having the screen surround the area that still needs to be taken up by the sensors?
I guess Apple wants a new “signature look” that instantly identifies the phone as a iPhone like the notch did since I don’t think there’s any other phone out there with a pill shaped cutout at the top of the display, at least not yet.

Finally. To be honest, that notch really does interfere with work and viewing photos. I'm constantly pulling down to try to see around it.
Now if we could get FaceID to work while wearing a mask it could be very groundbreaking, but I don't have any ideas other than holding a scanner up to an eye, which isn't any better. It is a good reason to bring back touchID into the screen but the tradeoffs may not be worth it.

My assumption is that the pill will be larger than some are envisioning. It seems everyone has already decided that the pill will house only the camera and one additional sensor, and that everything else will be magically under the glass.

Far more likely is that Apple has reconfigured and miniaturized some of the sensors and components, so that the entire suite can fit inside a pill-shaped cutout. But not nearly as small as is pictured.

I think this rumor sounds very realistic, and the pill will be "disappointingly" larger than most people are expecting.

That really depends. If the pill is small enough, it will disappear more if is surrounded by display. Also, having such a small piece bump out from the edge may not have the signature look Apple would be happy with.

I'm currently on the regular 13 (a massive improvement from my previous XR) but I really need the telephoto lens and the prores recording, therefore I'll jump on the pro with the 14.
If you really need the telephoto lens then the iPhone 15 will be perfect for you. I don’t see a big increase coming in the 14.

Why a pill and not a smaller notch, the same width as this pill?

With the pill, you’ve got wasted pixels above it, making this essentially a tall notch for no reason.
Those pixels would still be wasted even if you covered them with a notch "for no reason". this pill cutout produces less visual noise.

Realistically, what's the advantage of a cutout over a notch? That space above the cutout is worthless and would be even more distracting with movies, etc.
Movies don't play in the area around the notch and would not here either. that area is black when you play a movie.

I don’t think a pill shape would look good unless there are pixels between it and the bezel. If it’s stuck to the top edge a shrunken down notch would look much better.

a Phil-shaped camera!

Agree with everyone saying I'd rather see a Tiny Notch than the hole punch, even if it is pill shaped. Keeps the Apple branding and the space above the hole punch isn't useful for anything anyway.

So glad I didn't get the 13 Pro Max. At least this will be a better upgrade from the 12 Pro Max.

Yep. The pill shape is so Apple. Get it done.
+ Landscape FaceID unlock
+ A 2nd biometric authentication method to get around these damn masks ... ?

I wonder why Apple has reengineered the notch on iPhone 13 to make it smaller, to finally get rid of it only a year later. Not complaining at all if it’s true, but I find it strange
Work begins years in advance on the products in the pipeline. My guess is they have dual tracks. One working to realistically reduce its footprint year over year and another working to eliminate it or vastly, vastly reduce its footprint knowing that they’ll refine it over time using the realistic reductions in size track and when the technology is ready they’ll eliminate it or introduce display and camera tech that mostly eliminates it using the longer term track.

seriously though how hard is it to implement touch id ? they've had a year and they knew people needed it desperately in this modern masked world ,I don't get why not doing it ?

saving for next iphone lineup?

the problem with apple devices -and iphones in particular- is that people will buy them anyway ,so apple doesn't care much about novelty/improvements I feel

makes you wonder why they implemented a notch on macs just to drop the notch thing a year later

and all that for a crappy "1080p" camera ,let's face it
Notches are not the goal, they are means to increase screen size without making the case size larger and while allowing cameras and sensors. Apple was always going to reduce or remove the notches as soon as they could engineer components that didn't need the space. The laptop notch is that size because there are several other sensors in there besides just the camera. 1080p is adequate for a video conference camera where most software scales the video to 720p by default anyway. More resolution would require a deeper camera and lid.

Most of us got over the notch and are ignoring it now.
