As much as I'm excited about the prospects of Apple Silicon, I think I will buy this redesigned iMac with the last Intel processors.

In another few years I will look at an Apple Silicon Mac and see if I'm ready for it. As someone who works on Macs all day long I don't time to futz around with things being different/apps not working.

It seems absurd to me that Apple would unveil a new industrial design for the Intel-based iMac. They would almost certainly reserve the new design for the first Apple Silicon-based machine.
They did it with the PowerPC to Intel transition. No reason they wouldn’t do it again.

As someone who works on Macs all day long, Apple really doesn't provide what I would consider my optimal scenario. I work primarily on a 27" iMac + LG Ultra fine external display because its the closest thing.

Ideal for me would be:

1. A Mac medium - a headless Mac with: 8-Core CPU, 32 GB of RAM, mid-to-high end graphics.

2. An ultra wide display at retina resolution: 48", 7680 x 4320.

And combine 2 potential headlines into one? Why?

Headline 1: New iMac with New Design

Headline 2 a year or more later: New iMac with Apple Silicon.

It's not absurd, or even moderately different to understand.

All you got to do is look at Play HDR video on your Mac web page, for a near trillion dollar company it can waste huge sums promoting Apple TV + content but can't even provide HDR capable iMacs, unless you buy that iMac Pro bargain for $5K. ARM to the rescue might be a reality in a few years as you say, but we have to use what is usable now. 😁

Just for historical reference:
1. When was the first time Apple release Intel based Mac?
2. When was the last time Apple release their OS that worked for the Power PC?

I think any new hardware intel or ARM based would be welcome at this point.
Apple used to spend more development with computers but then they got all focused on churning out iPhones. So yeah they need to get back to popping out new hardware, and let us decide what is worthy, rather than over promising about ARM being so great. ;)

Let me guess: only the Apple silicon iMac features a new design, and as such, can be priced significantly higher.

PPC owners received two major OS releases over the course of four years after the Intel transition. My concern with buying an Intel Mac now is that, while it will be supported, it will only receive the next two, maybe three, major macOS releases.

Upgraded imac Pro or upgraded imac with serious single core, graphics, and ssd. I'd take either of those the moment they're released. Bonus points for imac with imac pro-style cooling and even more bonus points for bigger screen. I couldn't care less what case they're in as long as it doesn't hurt performance.

There is absolutely no reason that Apple have to do the same thing that they did decades ago in 2020.

They will have sat down a long time ago and hashed out a roadmap and whatever will be will be.

I suspect this time around things will move quicker than last time and not be supported for as long.

I think Apple will want to move on from X86 as quickly as they can.

Did you use any PPC Mac's? There was no joy using fat binaries and Rosetta. All it did was pull a Samsung tactic about being exclusive. PPC were not really any faster in normal business usage. If businesses don't like it, it's screwed. It might be better suited to specific devices not to the entire lineup of all Apple products. ;)

Apple always had significant margins. I just don't know if they are interested in making outstanding performance on the cheap. I would be really pleased if they did, I just don't have a nice feeling about a new direction being a better buy? We can all hope. :)

Supposed replacement for BeatsX
Thanks for the link, I’d forgotten about that. $200 for wired together AirPods and Prosser’s claim about the demise of Beats led me to dismiss that rumor. Maybe I’m missing something.

If the rumor concerning the new Intel-based iMac is true, I may be purchasing my last Mac. Take my money!

I don’t get it, why would you want a last gen intel Mac when all the software and everything is switching to arm based cpu. Why would you not wait and buy the arm based iMac. dont understand...

With so many schools likely switching to online education for the fall (many start in 1 month), right now would be the perfect time to launch a new iMac, MacBook, Mac mini.

A back-to-school update.
This is way I just bought an iMac Pro. I hope new iMacs don't come out soon now that I bought it. :( lol

Cant wait for ARM iMac 27" (probs increased to 32" with redesign)!!!!!! This will simply blow everything else away with the fastest performance from Apple chips

I don’t know anything about the demise of Beats but I believe the BeatsX was originally $180, so an Apple version at $200 sounds believable to me.

I don’t know... Beats as a brand aren’t inexpensive, and BeatsX are $100. I suppose Apple could add enough features to make an AirPods X worth $200. I don’t think they’d sell anywhere near as well as AirPods though.

A 32” iMac would be huge, it would monopolize my desk anyway. It would also be quite a bit more expensive than a 27”, which is already reasonably large. Bigger isn’t always better 🙂

The idea, as I understand it, is that it would have the same exterior dimensions as the current 27" iMac. The bezels would be narrower (like 2" narrower) to allow the 32" screen.

At my location, Apple's online store is showing Aug 4 availability for 27" iMacs, but—this is interesting—it is showing July 22 availability for the 21.5" iMacs. That's tomorrow (Wednesday). Hmm.
