After reading this thread I was expecting the Apple case for the 12 to look, feel and smell terrible, but I'm genuinely quite happy with my saddle brown case.
I own various high quality leather items so I'm not a stranger to what real leather is like. While it's not as immediately beautiful as an aniline leather item, my saddle brown looks and smells like leather. It appears to have a pigmented coat, but I believe the pores are still visible, so it potentially would be classed as semi-aniline as per
this site. Leather with pigmented coat is commonly used for a lot of different leather items, including some extremely expensive luxury goods.
People in the thread have been freaking out and saying the case isn't made of leather at all, which is evidently not true. Others have been panicking by saying that black marks will appear which cannot be removed in lieu of patina - but most have said that they've successfully cleaned off these marks, and they're just dirt and wear on top of the coating. I would like to hear more from anyone who thinks these marks are permanent.
In my opinion, better durability is probably a good thing for a phone case. I won't be going to any other brands because they all have compromises like no magsafe, big/ugly manufacturer logos, mushy buttons, an open bottom or a plastic bumper because of the leather not wrapping all the way around.
Clearly, the coating can be removed and a decent patina achieved for the people who are really passionate about getting a patina quickly. Personally I'm planning on using this phone and case for 5 years, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it looks down the line.
