I'm honestly a bit confused about the whole iPhone 12 leather case situation.
I see some people using sandpaper on theirs to change the look or create the patina, and other owners starting threads bout their case peeling off after a few days of normal use.
I got mine two days ago and am now trying it (I was using the silicone at first) but I'm not sure whether I should keep it or return it before some damage happens.
I heard the leather is much thinner than the previous years.. not so reassuring tbh.
I'd like to keep it because it looks sleek af but if it's doomed to peel off/break/show damage too soon, it's not worth it.
Ps: I got mine in black

This topic is a meditation for those who want their cases to change in appearance and exhibit distinct patterns of wear -- a patina -- in the course of normal use, as Apple's leather cases have traditionally done.

However, the type of leather that Apple has employed for their iPhone 12 cases is no longer ideally suited for that, as it has a coating that has protective properties, and results in a more wear-resistant finish that won't result in the same rate, or type of patterns when it does wear.

Therefore, some have taken it upon themselves to artificially accelerate the process, or remove the coating altogether, to try to mimic the previous characteristics.

The other brands of cases mentioned do employ the type of leather that Apple formerly used in its cases, for those who seek alternatives, without engaging in experimentation.

Discussions of the thickness of Apple's current leather, or its resistance to gouging and sharp objects, is peripheral to the main discussion, but those characteristics can also factor into users' choices.

I’m gona try this on my ugly california poppy, it could be uglier 😂
I guess Its much better than before

I used beard oil.. I dont know but I thought it kind of relative to skin and leather, maybe i’m wrong 😅
Gona to wait for it to dry out thin use it again
U cant imagine how much comes out from it using the sandpaper

I do have to wonder what protective properties the new coating has. it isn't resistant to normal wear at all (NOT talking about people who deliberately wore it down).

it looks as horrific as my saddle brown one looked after oiling it with coconut oil 😭

pro tip: put soap on it and wash it. let it dry. then repeat some more times. how mine looks now you can see can a few post above. and i like it now 😅

If you google ‘Pigmented leather’ or ‘semi-aniline’ its about water resistance, dirt resistance and stain resistance. I imagine the California poppy would stain and get dirty extremely easily without it.

what the hell did you do? 😳 please don't rock that case in public, needs to go in the bin. 🤦‍♂️😂

Winter leather starter pack.

Got the native union today, said sage, looks like cement, feels real good.
Wallet is aging fab, no grime or wear, only a darker color than new.
Red is starting to turn black on sides & edges.
This is with leather wipes whenever I use the case which is not daily.
Bleh, so much for trying to delay grime.
Disinfectant wipes & UV light seem to have no visible side effects on all 3.

The right image looks like looks like you tried painting a saddle brown case yellow but you gave up halfway 🤣

Updated pics. Still no signs of wear.
you can see it coming off at the top corners, you must handle it very lightly for it not to be showing on the other corners and on the front around the screen. aka what is happening to all cases without anyone doing anything to them intentionally.

still there’s no doubt the blue and black show the paint coming off less than lighter colors and are definitely the ones to buy. Looks good.

It’s not coming off at the top corners at all. I handle it normally.
