Is it normal for the Bullstrap to be kind of rough, it’s definitely not smooth at all? I am trying my hardest to find a case for the 15 pro max that replaces the Apple Leather, but I have come up short. I ordered this Bullstrap 14 pro max as I don’t have a 15 yet, but I am really disappointed. The texture isn’t nice at all. Not sure if the texture comes through on these pictures.

Maybe look at Alto. Just have a leather case from then. (The green one) Feels like an older apple case, also dimension wise.

I don’t think that looks too different to the ones I’ve had. It’ll smooth out as you use it.

If by smooth you mean not textured then it varies even within the same batch. They cut the leather pieces from a larger hide and some sections of the hide, like the stomach, is way "looser" and thus more wrinkly/textured. If you order a new Bullstrap it could be way smoother. There's also different grades on the hides as well as age of the calf/cow it was sourced from. Another factor is how tightly they stretch it over their mold.

It will NOT lose the wrinkly look over time.

This is leather though, perfect in all it's "imperfections". Wouldn't want it any other way.

I love that, but when I say not smooth, I mean rough to the touch. Not wrinkly, but rough.

Can't say I've ever felt a leather that was rough to the touch so I don't know what you mean. Only thing I can think of is what I already wrote, that because the leather is textured/grainy it isn't baby skin smooth. Apple leather cases were more flat so to say, they had no texture to them. But you say it is not because it is textured, so then I don't know.

Could the leather be dry?

Well maybe you’re right, I guess it just doesn’t feel like wrinkles, but maybe it’s textured. Sorry I am not real knowledgeable in leather.

If the Bullstrap smooths out over time, that would be fine. Apple just comes out of the box smooth.

It won't smooth out over time, that is impossible. To smooth it out it will have to be stretched tighter upon assembly.

These these shoes for example, the entire shoe is made from the same hatch grain leather, but the toe area is stretched so tight that it is less visible.

I’m guessing the product has been sitting in a warehouse for a very long time and the leather is dry because of that. Leather products have to be properly treated and used or they will get dry and feel brittle/rough.

Ok, so this case is definitely not like those shoes. Maybe smooth is not the right term, but soft. I am guessing I just don’t like the feeling. I don’t know how to describe it, but it almost feels like back side of a leather belt that’s what I would describe as rough.

This part of the belt.

Well that is the meat side of the leather and it gets like that when they clean off the meat. But now I can kind of imagine the feeling you are trying to pinpoint.

Your best bet is to condition the leather, the hide used for that case could have been laying in a warehouse for a long time. The absolute best product for this is Saphir Renovateur. I use that product for all my shoes, for my leather briefcase, leather cardholder and when I still wore belts I used it for that too.

But beware, less is more.

Thanks for the advice.

My thought was mess would it change with me using it. The oils of my band, would it make it feel better.

Oils from your hand will darken it, patina it, but it will not rejuvenate it if the leather is indeed dry.

If you end up using a leather conditioner and it still does not fix the issue then I would use a super fine sandpaper and just sand it down ever so slightly.

So is that recoverable?
100%. All leather is recoverable. It probably just lacks oil and conditioner and therefore feels rough/dry and (for lack of a better word) crappy. But the only way to repair the leather would be to condition it. Personally, I’d reach out to them and see if they will mail you a replacement. It might bring to their attention that their older inventory may be mistreated or simply been sitting too long in a warehouse.

Thanks. I was really wanting to try it to see if I wanted the 15 pro max, so I wanted to feel it. I guess I didn’t get a good representation of their leather.

Any other reccs for cases similar to the OG iphone leather case? Alto is like a 4 week wait on amazon.

Here’s a good example. I have a lot of leather boots, specifically Red Wings. A pair I ordered online during a big sale 5 or so years ago arrived and were very dry. Just felt rough, brittle and crappy. So I conditioned the leather and it brought the leather back to life. The two photos are the day they arrived and a a week or so later after I treated the leather and darkened it a bit. A proper well made leather product will last you a lifetime if you take care of it. Unfortunately it seems your phone case was either not properly treated or sat in a warehouse and dried out.

Oh wow!! The boots look amazing after the treatment.

Sorry I meant the bottom. Is it squared like the 14 cases.
Yes there are squared cuts out. Where the port and the speakers are. The slightly downside of the case. I also like open bottom cases. But the Forrest green color makes it up for it.
