... and i would vote for the mbp to keep the silver finish.

i personally think black makes it so mundane... just like all the other run-of-the-mill pcs out there.
Ironically, I think they should change the silver finish for the same reason. If you look in most laptops nowadays, many are silver mbp knockoffs. Almost all the vaios, for example.

yes. :)

i can't help but be curious as to why so many people here think that a removable hard drive is 'imperative' on a mbp?

it seems to me that the need for more storage would be much better solved by purhasing an external hd/portable external hd.

that would seem to be much more practical as:

1) one then has 2 drives that are 'always' accessible when one wants.
2) one hd can be used as a backup.
3) synching becomes easy (it must be a mess with swappable drives).
4) one can easily be plugged into any computer one wanted.
5) swappable means more fiddly stuff on the mbp.

or am i missing something here? hmmmmmm:eek:

any thoughts?

In my case I have a powerbook 15 for example with an 80 gig drive. It would be great to be able to drop a 160 or 200 gig baby in there and restore. Instead I have to take it to the shop and pay more to get my drive changed.

Same isse with the MacBook Pro 15. As computers age it makes sense to be able to upgrade the disk drive even if the system is slow in comparizon to newer systems. Get a few more years out of the old computer for little money.

I'm almost beginning to wonder if PowerBook silver is like ThinkPad black... the model has become synonimous with it's color/design.

Regardless, I'm looking forward for a slight design update this summer to bring to school! Apple will be getting a lot of business from me soon... iPhone, new MacBook Pro, then Leopard

But I'm afraid to get a "Rev. A" model of everything!

hardware .h264 encoding?

With new displays and rumored .h264 hardware encoding/decoding... i'm there.

crossing fingers. I wanted a new laptop before grad school. would be more awesome if leopard came out before September.

You obviously havent had one if you think metal in a laptop is a winning desing. More dents than a rear bumper squeezed into the front of parallel parking spaces.

I agree with you, metal sucks. Silver is outdated.

Bring on a slick matte black carbon fibre - plastic hybrid.

Metal seems to mar, dent, scratch prematurely, conducts heat to the lap too well, obscures wi-fi signals, and feels ergonomically wrong.

While Apple is at it, please design a slick dock for the Macbookpro. Why can't they get that right. Many pros would love the Mbp to magnetically connect to a dock with keyboard, mouse, cinema display, external drive, wired ethernet, ipod, iphone capabilities.

After tomorrow, new MacBooks will be late...

Intel's new Centrino for work and play

New notebooks with the Santa Rosa platform will arrive with several business-friendly technologies as the company pushes for better graphics.

This time around, Intel's mobile division is all business, but salespeople like to play games, too.

The latest generation of Intel's Centrino product set is scheduled to make its debut in San Francisco on Wednesday. Code-named Santa Rosa, the newest iteration of the trinity of Centrino--a Core 2 Duo processor, chipset and wireless chip--will give notebook users a chance to play with Intel's tech manager-friendly vPro technologies, among other things.

There will be two iterations of Santa Rosa under the Centrino Duo and Centrino Pro monikers, said Connie Brown, an Intel spokeswoman. Most of the details surrounding the new platform already have been discussed at length, such as support for flash memory and faster Wi-Fi connections.

The new platform will also set the stage for improvements in Intel's integrated graphics performance for notebook PCs, which the company is making a priority in the face of pressure from rival Advanced Micro Devices.

Despite that pressure, Intel has been on a roll lately, recapturing market share from its smaller rival thanks to a much-improved processor design that is paying special dividends in the notebook market. And market share gains are especially important this year because analysts don't expect it to be a strong year for PC buying.

YAY! Crossing my fingers for an enclosure update too! Hoping for user-replaceable hard drives and maybe a keyboard like the 13-inch MB's. . .
Not wishing to re-kindle an argument, I'll just say that I'll be quite happy if they'll leave the MBP's keyboard unchaged.

As for the screen themselves -- does anyone here have any information about screen defect rates in similar laptops from sony/others?

Well then maybe just an all-aluminum 13-inch macbook, even with aluminum keys. How cool would that be?

I like the aluminum. It's scratch resistant, grease resistant, stain resistant and it just feels nice. No fingerprints, no tiny tiny scratches, no stains or spots that need to be sanded off with a magic eraser. It's just a good material, until they invent a new one . . Maybe carbon fiber would be the best. Although I'm not sold on the finish right now and it seem difficult to make it in different colors. Perhaps just a better plastic or maybe even . . . BAMBOO!!!! THAT'S IT! The BambooBook!

I've just changed my powerbook for a macbook. I say they keep the powerbook/mbp style keyboard on the mbp, I'm not sure I like the macbook keyboard to type on really.

My main concern is that they update the GPU. I do a lot of gaming :D so that's kind of important to me. As for the enclosure, I don't know why any of you have a problem with it. I really like the MBP's current design. It's a lot nicer than just about any other laptop out there right now...

One vote for Apple NOT changing the MBP keyboard to the MB style.
Very annoying keyboard imho.

Yay! SR MBPs Soon!

All this speculation about materials and you didn't even mention cubic zirconia.

I used to say that too but after using my wife's macbook on a regular basis I found that I like the keyboard much better than my powerbook.

The keys have a larger surface area, less travel, and a crisper feel.

By comparison the PB keyboard feels flimsey, is difficult to clean, and sometimes you can accidentally pop off keys by getting fingers between the tapered sides. Also the PB / MBP keys still hit the LCD screen slightly and create marks on the screen over time. The Macbook keyboard is lower profile and doesn't come close to the LCD screen.

It is much easier to use the Macbook keyboard on a plane flight or in a confined area. It is easier to type on the Macbook keyboard without miss hitting other keys in those situations.

Apple needs to do something big with the next MacBook Pro revision, and I don't just mean the addition of LED or Santa Rosa to an aging and tired design.

They need to fully refresh the case itself to include some of the MacBook's features like a magnetic latch and user-swapable HD etc.

I mean c'mon, for all its advances, the MacBook Pro of today is still just a PowerBook G4 (case) of years ago...with a few tweaks here and there.

All that being said, I'm buying one the next time it's updated no matter what. :)

same here, i wanted to get it this weekend, but now seems to be too dumb to get it now so close to a major update...

Better waste 100quid to get a ram for my power g5 first and wait.. :D
Then get rid of my MB too as soon as the new MBP arrive. hahah
