Played the new part of the game yesterday and it was nice to see something new and fresh for a change. It is fun to see players adapt to the new maps and try different strategies for the last level. I look forward to addition add-ons to this game.

If Macs are not suppose to have a huge library of games, I am glad this game made the cut.

The difference is that I (and many others) won it over six months ago playing it on my PC. Therefore I'm not going to go out and buy it for my Mac.

Now if they came out with something first or at the same time as PC availability I'd definately entertain doing so.
Umm.. if you bought it on the PC you already have the Mac version anyway?

Only reason the lateness is an issue is the tailing off of online activity. There are still more than enough players to go around though. :)

Fortunately you won't have to buy this game again for your Mac. It's available to anyone that legitimately owns the game and wants to run on a Mac (that can handle it) since all Valve games are tied to Steam..

anyway, wanted to share my video I made here, just so people want to see how it runs on a MBP 13" 2010 320m natively in OSX, specs in sig.

L4D2 Sacrifice gameplay on MBP13" 2010 in OSX

I REALLY want to try Left 4 Dead 2, but i'm not sure my MacBook will be able to handle it all that well.

I have a MacBook Aluminum 13" from late 2008 with 2,4 GHZ CPU + 4 GB Ram + Nvidia 9400M.

Does anybody know? I'm not expecting the best graphics, but I just want it to run smoothly with possibly lower settings.

I'm inclined to say it will run. I had that Late 08 UMB (but the 2.0) and it ran Left 4 Dead 1 fine in Windows boot camp.. so I want to say you'll prob take a small hit in framerate in OSX but since source games are more CPU, turn down shaders for sure and I want to say it'll be playable. Do you have any other Source games to test? Half-Life 2, team Fortress 2? Portal when it was free? If those run to your liking then L4D2 should be okay. If anything just take a $6 guess and buy L4D2 while it's on sale and check it out.

But for me, I think it will run on low settings (at least), unsure of resolution but yeah. Your 2.4ghz CPU is good for it. And I think most important to turn down would be shaders since that's purely graphics card based. I run on medium shaders on my current MBP since it's a better gfx option.

I would buy it anyway just because of the $6.79 price. You may get a better Mac in the near future, plus the sale goes off tomorrow.

Thanks guys.

I downloaded Portal when it was free, and it runs okay on my MacBook in native resolution.

I think I will buy Left 4 Dead 2 then, not sure about the first one.

Runs like hell :D on my new IMac i3 3,2GHz, 8GB DDR3, ATI Radeon 5670 512MB with everything set to max and 4xAAF. But it's slightly faster on my Bootcamp partition.
I although installed Civilisation V and Medal of Honor T1 Beta, on my Bootcamp partition, which is awesome with every setting maxed out under the native resolution.

I tried it just for kicks with my mid-2008 white macbook that also runs a GMA to no avail. The game will launch but too glitchy to really navigate around, even with the settings at their absolute lowest. Also, if there's more than one character on screen at a time, audio goes away. The GMA gpu in your MBP might fare slightly better, but for me its unplayable. Luckily I'll be getting a new machine soon.

Cool. Thanks for the info! At least we got the game super-cheap, and can upgrade or play on other machines.

This is definitely good news for the future of Macs, though. These models are no good for this new type of usage because it was never much of an issue back in that time, but now we can expect some really awesome stuff in coming years.

I just wish they kept making MacBooks in black--GMA Achilles' heel aside, I love how these things look.

In Windows 7 on my Mac Pro, I can get a constant 60fps. This isn't the case in Mac OS X. Sadly it stutters a LOT especially during some lighting conditions. Also, my sound gets all choppy sometimes and the sound is also delayed.

Dammit lol, everytime a Valve game gets ported to Mac, Im slapped with a 4.6GB update on PC, and im away from home for 3 months with this tiny Internet connection.

Upgrade to source already, I know its not as great as 1.6 but still, Source is the future.... and you don't have to boot into Windows.

i have source.... actually I've had it for years... but source and most of my steam games run better on my W7 partition. I love osx but for real... steam games run better on w7

And here I was thinking I could game with iMac 20" C2D 2Ghz, 4Gb and HD2600.

Is it really that bad?

That sounds like my iMac; 2008 aluminium model, right? I was playing Left 4 Dead on it last night and it runs fine. I tried lowering all visual settings and running it at 1680 X 1050 and it was still playable. Audio is choppy no matter what the resolution but the game runs acceptably with the right adjustments.

As a general rule, any of Valve's FPS games would give you an idea of what can run on your system; they all use variables of the same game engine.

Did I mention Left 4 Dead 2 rawks! It is great to finally have it on the Mac.

Yup. The first game is a lot more tense and precise. L4D1 and 2 are very different games. It's like comparing a tense Hitchcock thriller to one of those modern slasher/horror films.

I actually really hate the melee weapons in L4D2. For some parts of the campaigns they're essential, it's very hard to get by with just pistols.

I like the gameplay in the original L4D better -- I agree, the first game does feel more tense.

The annoying thing is that in L4D2, they seem to have increased the zombie count but have cut down on your ammo capacity for weapons like the shotguns, so you're always forced to resort to using your secondary weapon for a lot of the time. Primaries are best reserved for emergencies and dealing with special infected.

Did anyone else get this?

I think I'll risk it ;)

I like the newer ammo mechanic. It makes me resort to actual tactics more often than just "spray and pray"

Side topic: Does anyone else besides me enjoy multiplayer campaign?

turn off shadows, that will help alot, but then the game looks stupid.

shadows and dynamic light are usually the biggest in performance hits.

That seems very odd. My 2010 MBP has more power than that Mini does by far and it runs terribly. I have the 2.53GHz i5 with the 330m GPU.

This confuses me as well. I have absolutely no trouble running it. Its not on highest settings, but one notch lower (except for textures and shadows, both of which are maxed). I get a constant 40-60 frames a second.

Have you all downloaded the 10.6.4 Graphics Update?

I played with the 9400m in my MBP in my sig on the default settings on my 24'' LED display. It looked and played great. I was also running iTunes in the background. I can't wait to try it with my 9600.

Awesome Customer Support

Valve Steam Customer Support was just great!
I wasn't expecting much but they were willing to refund me the single-purchase of the L4D2 pack so I could now buy the great L4D + L4D2 pack! :D
