Most of the time, you can't.

Tell me how you can upgrade your processor to 2x the performance for the same number of cores?

You can't. You buy a new CPU, and with that, probably a new machine.

If you want a new CPU, and the board doesnt support the socket, you get a new board, easy. Why re buy every other component, makes no sense at all

Games CPU, is that even a thing? It only runs games? It has special features that shoot lasers?

You can't replace just the GPU and expect better everything, all you are going to get, it's better frame rates, and also the GPU will be bottlenecked because your CPU isn't capable of doing the AI, game logic, etc. and then make all the draw calls of your brand new Graphics Card.

Also, the memory won't be able to fill the graphics card memory in time for the frame.

So all soft are and games require the same balance of CPU and GPU, again rubbish. If your CPU is sound and the GPU could do with a bump, bump it.
Again, why rebuy everything else in the box?

What's the matter of an SSD on a Core 2 Duo, yes, it will make it faster, but it won't make it a new processor, it won't make the whole system better. Yes, it's cheap, but it's better to put that money on the piggy bank and spend on a next generation computer when your PC will be obsolete.

It will boot faster, respond faster, nice upgrade. For games that read data such as FSX, it will make a big difference. FSX is quite specific, but a cheap SSD is a nice upgrade for any PC

Also, gaming on PC, is a waste of time and money.

You get so less bang for buck than a console, you have problems, the games are made to be as heavy on GPU's as possible, for the hype, and for the GPU manufacturere's money, which is evident. Whilst on consoles, they keep going and going year after year, you'll never have the urge to update your hardware to just play a new game... But that's me, I'm 27, so...

"You have problems" So, you decide that games software is always a problem?

Graphic quality and frame rate are better on a gaming rig. Costs more sure but if you are into gaming, you pay for it. Far more support for add ons, far more features within the game. Supports more peripherals. You can upgrade your PC as required as games get better and better, console upgrades are years and years apart

Past history is showing us the opposite. Apples profits are higher then competitors, even though they have more market share. Apple still has marketshare in the $1K and above category, which again has much higher profit margin.

What is Apples market share in +$1k?

Touch on a pc is a stupid gimmick that gets old as soon as you realize how useless it is.

A Mac mini with iris pro graphics and a $800 price tag would of had me.... But I guess that wouldn't make sense to Apple...

I really wanted a Apple machine but went back to the hackintosh scene.

Apple needs to understand the computer budget now includes a smartphone and a tablet...

$200 subsidized iPhones
$300-500 iPads
And they need capable $500-$1000 macs

Apple was first to say PC is less important
It is too bad that hasn't been reflected in the pricing....

Go back to plastic! Drop thunderbolt!
Mac OSX is what's important here!

I look at a gigabyte brix pro and wonder why Apple couldn't do that?

I upgraded the GPU in my Mac Pro. It was an ATI 2600 from 2008, and now, it's a NVIDIA GTX 650Ti Boost. Sure my new GPU has a really loser-ish name, but it's so much faster. The ATI couldn't run Mountain Lion without everything jittering for some reason, plus it sounded like a lawnmower. I didn't upgrade the RAM because RAM for this particular machine is a total ripoff, but I could have upgraded the CPUs for about $50 if I wanted more power.

What did you want me to do, buy a new Mac Pro? I bought this 2008 machine in 2012 because I didn't want to spend the insane amount of money for a new one.

I sense they are a tech rep/reseller. I see a few on their visits to my workplace when the regional peeps do their tours. They will happily tell you why you need the latest and greatest.

Or they are a benchmark spammer. About the only place you see the differences they are on about. Most real world uses I have seen....the small cheap fixes get you good results in all practical use.

I will grant them you aren't getting the "full" benefit. But like with upgrades memory I'll take the boost it give for lower cost. Would I like a new 2014 mbp with 16gb....sure. Do I have the money? Nope.

Even if I did for what I do now....cost not worth it to me really. I stopped bleeding edge chasing ultimate benchmark numbers years ago.

So into the late 11 mbp went 16 gb's at some point. I am quite happy with it. Apps used include LR, Aperture, FCP and some "geek" stuff like R for data analysis and other data analysis tools. As well as dev tools since I try my hand at programming from time to time. Gets me where I need to be.

Would a 2014 specced for 16gb run a 6 minute job in 5? MAke them happy and say sure. Do I as a hobbyist need to pay a few thousand for that? Not really.

Its quite true. When everything Apple does is great with no comprehension to look at pros and cons of Apple PC's or other brands thats fanboyism. They all have pros and cons, they are all built by underpaid asian workers, they all have issues. Its that simple, hence why discussions here with that mindset are merely amusing. Blind

Are you kidding? You keep saying this, but there are dozens of posts in this very thread, where people are talking about things they dislike about Apple products.

And there are people who are very happy with Apple products. That's what you'd expect, and is perfectly rational. It seems like you are making things up.

Uh, my old GPU used to do a 5-second job in 5 minutes if I didn't stick with Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion and Lion were nearly unusable on it, just opening Finder windows and using Safari. Also, Final Cut Express is a lot more convenient now because I don't have to pre-render everything anymore.

Let me tell you about my 2006 iMac I used to have. The hard drive broke. It took hours to replace. The GPU broke. No repair possible. I had to sell the thing cheap, along with its beautiful and perfectly working 24" 1920x1200 LCD monitor that I couldn't connect to anything >:0

Remember a lot of businesses who deffered upgrading from XP will now be upgrading their fleets of pc's which gets included in these numbers and obviously apple aren't exactly synonymous with large enterprise deployments.

This has no real impact on the consumer space is expect apple to be a small % seeing as they are a premium niche brand, more so with casual users turning to tablets and mobile computing.

Will go you complain about this somewhere else? Plenty of people here like me are complaining about things Apple does wrong. On every single article that mentions Apple, you and AppleScruff or someone has to come in and say "wow, all you guys totally change your answers depending on whether or not it's Apple" if anyone dare says something positive about Apple. I use a Mac despite Apple's flaws, and I'm never going back to Windows because it sucks; I feel bad for anyone who has to use it.

I cannot fathom how anyone could purchase a Chinese Communist Computer (a.k.a. Lenovo) over an Apple...

The more I read the headlines, the more I realize people these days have lost their minds...

Loving my Macbook Air and looking forward to iPhone 6!

I think you will find most of, if not all of your Mac came from communist China....but don't worry capitalist Apple made the requisite profit from you!

mini tower mac with no laptop parts and dedicated graphics card and i am in!

Not surprising as Apple hasn't released any new PCs and the Wintel space is upgrading from XP to 7/8.
This...
We are in second half of 2014 and Apple is still selling 2013 and 2012 computers. Where is the new Mac Mini, new range of MacBooks and iMacs..?
Apple will not stay in top three by selling old and outdated computers.

khaaaaaaaaaaaan!

Wow, that was fast. My favorite show ever!

This is also my ideal computer. Like a Mac Pro but for advanced consumers. It could be called the "NerdMac". Apple only wants to produce non-portable laptops called iMacs. They could at least stop using laptop parts in iMacs.

No, I'm not and your quoting my quote out of contact with what it replied to.

I am an Apple user, and a recent switcher, and you are quite correct, many Apple users here are happy, many have some complaints. Perfectly rational. What gets me is the few that are so Apple fanned up, that any criticism of any magnitude is a disaster. The never ending need to defend. Thats my sole point. Whatever negatives I have I accept as the tick boxes that are ticked, outweigh these. I am happy to talk pros and cons of anything and keep my bias off the table, that makes for a rational discussion.

These are all for the rMBP.

i7-4750HQ: 2.0GHz
I7-4850HQ: 2.3GHz
I7-4960HQ: 2.6GHz (better benchmark than the i7 in the iMac)

I suppose that you have edited your post because you have googled them and have found that none of them are exclusive to Apple.

Apple was the first to release them, but Intel doesn't make them FOR Apple.

If I wish to complain about the never-ending defensiveness by some here I will. Whats the point in having a discussion when some chime in defending Apple as they feel hurt that Apple got criticised. I use Apple with only a few irritations, not an issue, and I have no need to criticise Apple but I get tired of the whining of a few when Apples name gets criticised by others. In fact many of the negatives mentioned here are relatively minor, but whoa, on come the defence squad. All because a stat was released that showed a reduction in Apple share. I equally disagree with the over the top comments over Apple fading etc.

For the first time in years, I have no interest in buying an Apple machine. I got a Surface Pro 3, after having a Surface Pro 2 (sold my 15" Retina Macbook Pro) which is a really great machine, though not without lots of the typical Microsoft foibles.

Still, it is far more interesting of a machine than anything Apple currently has. Which really makes me sad, because for the first time in a LONG time, I am hesitant to recommend an Apple computer to my friends.

Say what you will about Windows 8.1, it is coming along pretty nicely - I was shocked at how much lower maintenance it was compared to Windows Vista (last version of Windows I had the displeasure of using, yuck).

I really enjoy the SP3, and all of my friends and family are enthralled with it (though it has its issues).

I have started hearing words like 'boring' thrown around when describing Macs these days, which is ... not supposed to happen!

C'mon Apple, we are starting to believe that the media is right, without Steve at the helm, you've lost your way once more.

No. I don't want Apple to make a Surface Pro 3.
Who is "we"? "Without Steve at the helm"? Do you HONESTLY think that Steve would make something like the Surface Pro 3?
This comment angers me.

Please! Everybody knows Apple Macs are more expensive and generally better machines. But, the market is made up of consumers at all levels. Some richer and some poorer. The beauty of competition is consumers can find a product that suits their needs and their pocketbooks. There is nothing wrong with Lenovos and HP machines. There is a market for them especially the government market which seeks to save taxpayer dollars.

My 10 year old dell laptop still runs (and it has a 1,920 x 1,200 screen). I had 2 apple laptops die on me in that time.

Apparently my late 2011 macbook pro is destined to die too:

I...wish I didn't agree with you. Because I really thought windows 8 was a sloppy mess at first and vowed to never even bother looking at that ugly sorry excuse for an operating system ever again.

...then the surface pro 3 came out. Wow. I'm a hell of a lot more impressed than I thought I would be. I actually caught myself holding my iPad while watching a video review of the surface pro 3 getting a little jealous. Jealous! When the hell does that ever happen? I've been so content with my iPad I barely ever even use my MacBook. But that thing...it seems like if your goal is to have one device that does everything, it's a pretty damn good solution. I can't tell you how annoying it is just trying to reply to youtube comments on an iPad. Or browse certain sites and all the tabs keep refreshing and deleting your form data. It's getting old.

But, I am still happy with my iPad. Just saying. The surface pro 3 is a strong competitor and if I wasn't so attached to my pad, I would easily have snatched a surface for myself

Wrong.

Those PC's are useless, and nothing you say is true. The only advantage of PC "modularity" is for manufacturers to ship more models, which is not a problem for Apple, specially in this day and age.

"Upgrading" a PC is one of those things that got a taboo with enough push from PC "enthusiasts", salesmen, hardware manufacturers, etc...

In real therms, upgrading a single part on a system, is just stupid and economically unworthy.

If you want more performance, you can't get it just by upgrading a CPU, or RAM, or whatever. You can only get it by upgrade the WHOLE machine.

There's no performance gain in a system that runs ok with 8GB to move to 16GB or 32GB, if that memory is STILL slower, if the CPU can't access the RAM as fast.

When CPU's change appreciably, the chipsets and sockets also change, so, you won't get a radically better CPU, you get another range from the same CPU, you need to buy a radically better CPU to appreciate the difference, there's no way you'll tell the difference from a couple of MHz, yes, there are dual core, quad-core, different clock's, but that's just a small difference from generation to generation, and the best thing to do is to buy the correct CPU for your needs.

Seymour Cray

Clueless...

I build a top of the line windows gaming system. 1.5 years later I bought the exact same gfx card for next to nothing and SLI'ed it. Insta 80% frame rate increase. Games are rarely CPU limited these days.

Which laptop comes with the I7-4960HQ? None that I can find.

And I edited my post to make it a little more polite. :)

They also have military contracts. They took over what was the NMCI contracts for the US Marines. Little bit of their numbers is probably some tech refreshes for the Marine Units. As when they took over from NMCI they started to rip out the Dells prior contract holders put in place. Decent amount of consistent sales this gets them I'd wager.

You are right. Didn't consider Uncle Sam.

Last time this thread was out, much of it was if tablets should be in the figures. I'd like to see tablets separate so I can form a general opinion on desktop/laptop numbers and tablet numbers.
