Desktops are not portable.

I wouldnt call this thing that portable. Portable would be anything that you can carry with ease, such as the MBP or any laptop I would say less than 7lbs. But everybody has their own view on what IS portable, so that would be your decision.

All I know is that when I am going somewhere on vacation, I want something that has enough power for what I do, in a small package that is thin and light in my backpack. The MBP/MB is the perfect candidate. Nobody wants extra weight...

But, everybody has their own opinions, so do what you want.

For crying out loud, its a whole 1.5lbs heavier and with that you get a wacom tablet, 2 hard drives up to 3 if you remove the dvd drive, brighter screen, better options and a numeric keybad. This slaughters the lame macbook pro 17". That laptop has nothing in it. No, apple really needs to make this laptop in aluminum. I can't wait to see how apple responds, most likely they just won't. :(

The question Apple will be looking to answer is "does a market for this kind of laptop running OSX and OSX based applications exist?". And if the answer is "no" outside of us hardware obsessed geeks, they won't make one. Apple don't make shelfware, computers designed to sit on a shelf in their HQ just to prove "we can build one that way if we want to", they build stuff to fly out of the stores just as soon as it can.

The one thing Apple perhaps could stand to copy from Lenovo here is the built in screen colour calibrator. That's something that makes sense for Apple's target market for the Pro range, and adds another differentiator between the macbook and the macbook pro if it's only added to the MBP.

Lol? For someone with "Mac" in the name, you seem to have a very poor grasp of Apple's MO, and I'm guessing their history.

They don't "respond" to individual computer models. This is outside the scope of what they do.

Honestly, please use your brain logically.

The MacBook Pro isn't about the fastest laptop computer. It's about a satisfying blend of power and portability, in an elegant, aesthetically pleasing case.

Get with the program, please.

No, Apple doesn't "need" to make this, or any other specific model. You need to just go buy the Lenovo and stop complaining that you can't force a billion-dollar company to custom-build a model that doesn't fit with their business model, just to satisfy one person's whims. If you really want Apple to make something like this, why don't you place a pre-paid order for 500,000 units, to make it worth their time and expense? Even then, they won't do it, because Apple is too smart to waste their time chasing every new gizmo that comes out. They have a long-term research/development/business development/sales/marketing plan in place, and I'm fairly certain that it doesn't revolve around your specific needs/wants/desires/whims.

How many users in the world have heard of Apple, IBM, Dell, Toshiba? How many have bought from them? Now, how many have even heard of Lenovo? They're totally insignificant, in terms of future planning for the major manufacturers.

and i'm guessing a whole lot more heat and about 1 hour in real world battery life. oh and it's still fugly. ;)

apple isn't a company that "responds" and why would they? if they had to "respond" to every laptop that got replaced they'd have a hundred different laptops.

1.5lbs is a lot when its thick and ugly. Let me ask you a question, how is it portable if it gets probably less than 1 hour?? It will also run extremely hot with all that crap and the fans will be like a helicopter. This thing is joke and I am not going to lie, is ugly. If you don't like Apples stuff, go buy a Lenovo. And you are also comparing it to the CURRENT MBP!!! WHICH WAS UPDATED WHEN??? FEBRUARY 2008!!! And no, Apple is not going to make ANYTHING like this...it's a complete waste of money. (Just my opinion)

While I think you're right, I'm now going to laugh until my lungs come up through my nose if Steve's "One More Thing" at this rumoured event in September turns out to be the Lenovo-killing '21" MacBook Fugly'

No...Steve is going to whip out the long-waited PowerBook G5...only 3 inches thick with a built in stove for on the go cooking!

Very impressive specs for a "laptop", but having worked on hundreds of Thinkpads in my day, they're crap (IMO), and you couldn't pay me to own one. The only thing I like about them is that parts are easy to replace. Kudos for trying something different, though.

I enjoyed reading this :D

What series did you use? 'cause I'm surprise you said they're "crap"

It just...surprises...me that Apple as a company has only offered two portable lines for over a decade now and neither of them was meant to be a "portable workstation" or a "portable gaming rig" and yet now people expect Apple to suddenly match Windows PC's model for model across the entire range - which would mean scores of different models considering the variety of form factors available in the Windows PC world (thanks to literally thousands of vendors all fighting to carve out a unique niche where they can make some money).

Honestly, it may sound great to us hardware geeks to walk into an Apple Store and see the:

  1. MacBook
  2. MacBook Mini
  3. MacBook Extra
  4. MacBook Ultra
  5. MacBook SemiPro
  6. MacBook Pro
  7. MacBook Pro Mini
  8. MacBook Pro Extra
  9. MacBook Pro Ultra
  10. MacBook Artist
  11. MacBook Air
  12. MacBook Light
  13. MacBook Traveler
  14. MacBook Video
  15. MacBook Workstation

With a price range from $999 to $9999.

But for the person looking to move to Apple for the first time? They'll run screaming from the place.

Personally for people who know nothing about computers its already confusing enough. I saw a granny at an apple store who said she wanted to buy " A laptop. The thin one" but she was pointing at MBP....

Hahahaha...I am sure she just wasted 2k.

Probaby for a lazy grandson that whined about not having one

You've got a point there. One of the selling points of Apple kit I've been able to point people at who are considering switching is that they can go into the nearby store and have a nice relaxed experience where there are only a few kinds of machine to pick from and the employees can therefore help them consider which machine out of the whole range will be a good fit for them.

dude i swear if apple puts audio jacks in the front of the computer im going to be pissed.
my friend has a dell something (like the smallest one they make, or lightest) and his are on the front.
and i was using it while we were waiting for something and the jack just keeps hitting me in the stomach and that area and is really annoying.

Yup, things like that should be on the side. But then again, so should the dvd-slot on our respective MBPs :-(

ya right i like the dvd in the front,
well i hardly use discs, and when i do its at home on my stand with a second screen so its nice in the front, but w/e, im starting to like the macbook keyboard (i have been using my sisters) so i guess on the side could work.
