I've been following this thread for a while and looking to pull the trigger on the X1E. Couple of questions for folks about accessories.

Anyone found a sleeve that fits? I can't for the life of me find anything advertised for this particular model.

Docks that work well with the X1E? I know Lenovo has an option, but it's super pricey.

Thanks!

A sleeve or a case?

The X1E is one of the larger 15" laptops clocking in at 14.24 and many larger cases I've been looking have a width of 14.25"

I'm leaning towards a sleeve by Waterfield Designs (sfbags.com). I'll need to select the "other" category and provide the model and dimensions in special instructions box that comes when you add the sleeve to your cart. They mention that that they will basically build to order the sleeve to fit your laptop.

I have not yet. I know that there is a Reddit post where a guy used a couple utilities, I forget the first, no throttle or something like that and Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and got great results. He posts his settings, but I haven’t attempted it yet.

@c0ppo

It will occasionally “woosh” a little on program start, much like the MBP, but settles down right after. I don’t find the bottom gets uncomfortably hot. I have used it several time while wearing shorts and the bottom resting on skin. Warm, but not uncomfortable.

Using the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility for the new updated Bios (1.19) and this is what I'm getting...Fans do not come on as often and not as long for what I'm doing.

... Just picked up an XPS 15, a very similar laptop! 8750H, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, and the 1050 TI Max-Q, 1080p Display... got it open-box at Best Buy, looks pretty much brand new, for $1290 after taxes. $129 store credit since I signed up for a Best Buy card.

At first I was really scared because right when I booted, it had some serious fan issues. Updated the BIOS and it's a lot, lot better. Got to undervolting it with Throttlestop, and it's been a good experience so far - I have 14 days to return it, no questions asked, so I'll play around with it for awhile and see if I like it.

Congrats, that looks like a sweet deal.

67c and the fans are not spinning up yet?

I think TPFanControl has the fans spinning up at 65c, so that seems similar. I have TPFanControl running nicely except for one fact, it seems to crash/close itself every so often. I don't see it in the notifcation tray, nor does the task manager show its running.

I had a scary moment with trying to apply 1.18 so I'm kind of gun shy about going to 1.19 but if I don't need to worry about tpfancontrol it might be something to embrace.

No, it did not spin up. I'll try it again to make sure.
I'm sure that's the case, I wonder what threshold we do see them ramp up.

Its funny, I saw people on both lenovo and the subreddit complaining about how quick the fans were spinning up, and now with 1.19 people are complaining the fans are not spinning up and the their laptops are running hotter. You can't have it both ways, aggressive fans and a cooler laptop, or a quieter laptop with fans not spinning up as fast but it runs hotter.

I'm on the fence, I do like the quietness, but I would rather have a cooler laptop.

Even at 68c it did not ramp up the fan but it did in the high 70's. The fan sound was not really loud either, just a mild swoosh as I have heard before, not a jet engine either as one has posted

What temperatures are you getting with your laptops?

Mine is around 48 - 55 C when light web browsing, ramps up to 60 - 65 when doing medium-sized work, and 70 - 75 maxed. Are these good temperatures?

Yep.

Edit:
Yes these are good temperatures, all within a normal acceptable range.

I've just had an email from Lenovo telling me my X1E order has been delayed and they will get back in touch when they have an estimated shipping date. I ordered another computer from Lenovo a month ago and that one is also delayed, not expected to ship until the end of March. They seem to give unrealistic estimates on the website!

TSE - I can't speak for a super thin laptop but my Sony Vaio i7, 16Gig ram, Radeon graphics, runs at 47-55 degrees under light load (several web tabs) and goes up to around 63 when working in Lightroom and Photoshop or when watching youtube videos. I don't do gaming so I can't include a high load temp. Our Dell i7 laptop is exactly the same. So your laptop sounds about normal to me.

Are Lenovo's sales (aside form traditional ones like Black Friday) more or less random? Is 20%off pretty much the most one can hope for?

I'm still thinking I'm at least 18 months away from "needing" to upgrade from my mid-2014 15" MBP, but have been planning my move out of the Apple walled garden. I'm finding the little things involved w/ such a switch to be most annoying; e.g., I currently use 1Password (non-subscription synced w/ iCloud) and I need to figure out a new solution unless I decide to start paying subscription. All-in-all though, I think I have a good handle on mapping-out my eventual migration. I've been exclusively Apple since 2007, and this isn't nearly as daunting as I feared.

.

Anywhere between 20 and 33% off from Lenovo from time to time. At times, Lenovo would have sales every two or three days and I had to keep on canceling and ordering again because a better sales appeared until I finally got the one I have now.

I have seen codes as high as 25%, but they do seem to be rather random :)

As for password managers. Lastpass, KeePass, Dashlane, TrueKey and others have free versions

Pretty random but I think the offerings as mentioned are typically around 20 to 30%. If your company is aligned with Ticketsatwork, you may get a bigger discount. Lenovo offers steep discounts for ticketsatwork.

You can just ask them to refund you the difference if it is within 3 weeks. That is what they told me.

We barely get ANY computer sales here in the UK - and if we do they're pretty stingy.

I've had an update on my X1E - apparently it will arrive on March 28th (ordered March 7th). Its baby sister, in the form of an L390Y, has now shipped.

I'm excited because as I mentioned earlier my otherwise gorgeous Sony Vaio laptop has truly horrific near constant fan noise ever since a recent Win10 update (and none of the possible remedies worked - it's down to Win10 refusing to allow my previous MB thermal drivers) so frankly any new laptop will be a relief. At least I'll have a 'worst point comparison'!
