Leo Laportes says Apple Watch is pointless and doesn't do anything

He said this on his radio show the other day. Said it was an OK pedometer but that was it. I don't have the watch so I can't really comment but below are two first impressions that certainly don't share his opinion.

It makes me wonder if some in the tech world are overthinking the watch. Jason Snell's review was 2,700 words. The Verge employed over 30 people in its review. Perhaps the average consumer "gets" it better because they're not over thinking it or over complicating it.

I'll be curious to listen to the first hour of a Rush Limbaugh's show today. He's a big Apple fanboy who's been negative on the watch. But he received two watches (I believe as gifts) and he said after going through the online user guide he was becoming more intrigued by it. I only caught the beginning of his second hour where he said with heavy use he was getting 16-20 hours battery life so far.

He said the iPad was a flop too. I listen to a lot of twit and he is very pro Android. Decide for yourself.

That is absolutely true of Iain Thomson; I recognize it because I used to be one. (Though I maintain I was only that way because Apple really was a bit of a joke technologically back in the 90's - once Apple caught up I eventually got over it, others not so much.)

I'm still not sure I see what people mean about Leo's ego. He makes fun of himself all the time. Even when he predicts the success or failure of something he acknowledges he's been wrong almost every time in the past. I disagree with him very often - but there's nothing wrong with that, I find him entertaining.

I was a hater of Apple until I bought the first gen Intel MacBook Pro (early adopter already). Going Intel finally gave me a reason to try them.

It's possible to have an ego and appear humble. Being humble can actually boost your ego. It's like saying I'm so good at seeing faults I can even identify my own.

Lord it's hard to be humble...

And who really cares...

What Leo LaPorte thinks anyway. For those of us who have followed his career for a couple of decades, he has repeatedly demonstrated his tepid and most often populist regard for personal computing human interface. IMHO he has always been more interested in what his listeners/readers felt about him, than about any given product I have seen seen him review. If the watch works for you, purchase one. If not, who cares.

He seems to make crazy statements often enough. I remember all the awkward statements towards Sarah Lane on iPad today and even in this last Twit he talked about how he wanted to have sex with Google... Crazy man indeed!

Agreed. Alex is broadcasting to a segment that isn't interested, professional videographers and production companies who spend $60k in an afternoon and then spend another $45k on crap the next shoot. There's probably 4 people in MBW's audience that relates on any level to Alex, and he sounds pompous on air.

I agree. Alex is ridiculous.

Leo emphatically loves Google. He strongly believes in the whole Google ecosystem believing "Google will never do anything wrong with my data". And he wants devices that get as much out of that ecosystem as possible. Also he really loves Android over iOS for the user interface. He places an extremely high value at "glance information" that Android widgets provide while not even considering the iOS notification panel can provide that same information.

One thing Leo and others lose sight on is Apple Watch is the only smart watch that fully integrates with the iPhone. The Apple Watch is the best wearable for iPhone users.

Also Leo has the ability to compare a complete Android ecosystem (watch and phone) with a complete iOS ecosystem and since he loves Google so much he will always be biased toward Android.

Lastly Leo has a 0% prediction track record for the success of any consumer device. He's a radio talking head that has had his own success in entertainment but his opinions should never be taken in any serious regard.

Long story short: Ignore Leo. He doesn't get it.

Well said. A couple weeks ago Leo said iPhone users were misguided and ignorant and only bought them because of Apple's marketing. He then compared iPhone users to people who liked Mussolini because he got the trains to run on time or something to that effect. Gee, why aren't people taking him seriously?

All my friends have actual legitimate reasons for using one over the other.
I use an iPhone because I like the design and usability of iOS and the attention to detail not because of marketing. I also own a OnePlus One but prefer iOS to Android. There are good and bad points to both.

Great points. He said on the last TWIT that he wants Google to know everything about him because it makes Google now so much more useful. His guest from the UK was aghast.

Yes and on another recent episode he showed his Google Dashboard on screen including all his email addresses and phone numbers along with other information such as his recent Google searches and the last time he changed his Google password.

To follow up, here's Leo Laporte and Andy Ihnatko discussing the potential of the Apple Watch (a 5-minute segment extracted from MacBreak Weekly #452) ⬇︎
