Firstly, the original poster calls the OS a regression because of a couple of things he does not like. Wow.

Secondly, I think Apple just need to add another option to the Stacks context menu - View as menu, which would then just behave like a folder.
As soon as Apple adds Leopard to their feedback page you need to give them that feedback. That would be incredibly easy to implement for them and keep a lot of people happy.

there are pro-users too.

This makes me laugh. Pro users would use a more superior method of launching apps...Quicksilver or the new improved Spotlight. Using a Dock folder to start programs (very WindowsXP-ish IMO) is just an old bad habit. Put your most used programs in the dock and use quick search for the rest. If you really hate the keyboard, create multiple stacks for your programs. You can use aliases from the Apps folder to create custom stacks.

Nobody is forcing you to use stacks. Just dont use it then. The doc can also be enlarged..so look..theres 2 of your issues solved. haha

I agree... so far I haven't been a fan of stacks so I have not used them at it- it is really that easy! Just give it time and see how you feel in a week.
At first I couldn't understand why I would need spaces and what the big deal was and after a day the light went on and it all made sense. It took getting used to the change but now.. I LOVE Leopard!

More shouting, more whining. Everyone calm down.

What's under the hood is important to most users, even if they don't realize it. As i said earlier, wait until we get some true, Leopard-made apps, and then we'll see how 10.5 has changed the Mac experience for the better.

I also appreciate what's under the hood but changes there have to deliver something tangible...ZFS, that's under the hood and when RW comes it will make a big difference to time machine, syncing apps e.t.c that's something tangible. If everyone is talking about the big under the hood change being a true 64 bit OS you need to wake up and smell the coffee ! 64 bit has been around for years and for most things it makes shag all difference. I guess the same people talking aboout that are getting really excited for the 512bit Xbox 1024 or 2Gb Playstation 10.

And who gives a toss about what's "under the hood"? Would you replace your car that goes at 1000mph with another that goes at 1000mph because the petrol flowed a different way?

In terms of sickness, i'm also sick of whiners. But even more sick of fanboys.

Mmmm... 1000mph car....

Sorry man, but your car thing doesnt really work. Tiger and leopard aren't on par with each other at all.

Also, and correct me if im wrong, but you dont care whats under the hood. So.... if leopard was really cool to look at and had all these really cool looking icons and fade effects and stuff, it would be a kick ass OS to you? Even if it couldnt read the dvd drive or even access the ram properly....? Whats under the hood is extremely important. Its what allows use to use the hardware to its full potential...

I know Leopard isn't perfect and there are some features I don't like. But come on... Why does everyone just focus on negative side of everything? At least wait until 10.5.1 or 10.5.2. A lot of things are going to get fixed.

I'm not saying people shouldn't say what they don't like or something. But I've been seeing a lot of posts like this: "I don't like this feature, Leopard sucks, Tiger was better."

I mean, you're the kind of person who's going to say Leopard sucks because of small features, maybe you've should waited before upgrading so you could see other people's opinion and really know if it was worth upgrading.

But how can you have something 'tangible' without a capable OS in the first place? Leopard has to come first, then the apps follow. People still write applications these days.

Ask any dev whether they'd rather be writing apps for Tiger, and see what response you get.

10.2 - 10.4 have been so well designed that I think Apple has reached a point where the OS is getting cluttered and busy. I think they have also lost their vision regarding the GUI. I don't want people to think this is a BAD OS. It is NOT. My post was simply stating that any OS that was going to follow Tiger has really big shoes to fill and IMHO Apple hasn't quite done this with Leopard.

I think it's very sad that users who disagree have to resort to such petty and pointless sledging.

Ha Ha?? Nice one Nelson Muntz

I don't want to make comparisons with windows, but at least in xp microsoft provided with an option to use classic view if you liked. WHY Apple does not let to choose - the new look or let's say tiger's. A lot of people would just went for Tiger option and it would be just fine. I don't like certain things in Leopard and probably would stay with Tiger if I didn't have to use bootcamp. I think that transparent bar is a bad idea. I have wallpaper changing every hour, I have a lot of pictures, so the bar changes colors, some of them look ok, but some hard to see. Again, give an option to switch to solid colors. Finder windows - I have to set up every window to look right, in Tiger we had an option "apply to all windows". Where is it now? And why did they leave it out? Anyways, I don't think yet it is worth the money I paid, not even considering the headaches I had to deal with, and I have two month old iMac 24". I regret I believed Apple and jumped in to buy it without seeing it first.

IMHO, Leopard has more flaws than it does improvements.

Stacks has crippled the way I access all my Applications and Documents. The new side bar makes access to shared folders & files less efficient. The new Dock is an ugly, hard to read and requires binoculars to see what programs are open. (give us back our arrows!). The new folder icons, although nicely designed, simply don't follow the design of the rest of the OS and that aside, they make location of enclosed files and folders hard, due their difference being far to subtle.

Having used Apple computers since since my first Mac Plus, I consider myself a loyal fan. I'm sad to say, on this occasion Apple has simply "tarted up" Tiger. Yes there are a few "cool things" but on the whole this OS isn't a worthy successor to Tiger. 10.4 and a half :(

Don't forget that the visual/tactile features and enhancements in Leopard, whether useful or not, are accompanied by under the hood improvements to OSX, such as better threading, full 64bit, CoreAnimation, etc...

Personally, I think it's time for the Dock to be moved to its own layer, similar to Dashboard.
ie: press a key, and the Dock "layer" would come to the front like Dashboard.

Yes, may be, but people are mostly annoyed by what they see, things that they deal with on hourly basis - visuals and comfort of use. Like I said, if Apple gave us a choice to switch to the look and options we all got used to - it would solve many problems. When I bought Apple I was surprised I could not customize basic things, highlight color in menus (I hate that bright blue). I am sure there are a lot of improvements, but visually they made Leopard a little weird. But I do like many things as well. It is just my opinion. Unfortunately these little things which are not what I expected are taking my attention. I hope for fixes. I am new to mac .... do these fixes make big difference?

Here's a copy of the feedback E-mail I sent to Apple.

"Please get rid of Stacks or at the very least give us back the option to add hierarchical folders to the Dock. ...

lol... I bet they will get rid of stacks since you asked.

At least wait until 10.5.1 or 10.5.2. A lot of things are going to get fixed.

Why do we have to keep tolerating releases that are full of bugs, and expected to wait patiently until they get around to fixing them. My father used to say "Do it right, or don't do it at all"

For those of you that don't like Leopard simply go back to Tiger. :p Even though I don't like stacks I'm sticking with Leopard...it's easily a net positive. Plus I always expect there to be a thing or two I might not be a fan of, but overall I think it's a keeper.

Certainly some things will be improved over the coming months. Just give them some time to digest the issues and I'm sure we will see improvements. Until then just hang out and use Tiger. Simple...

I agree with you. We all pay for this and get the product which is not functioning to full potential. I'd rather wait for a proper product. Next time I wont jump on a wagon so quickly. Go back to Tiger?? If apple give my money back - may be I would consider this. But I need bootcamp and as far as I am aware beta version will stop working in december or so, which means I need to stick with Leopard. Don't get me wrong, I like most of Leopard, but why leave behind the things which were good? Any designer or post film editor will tell you that transparency is bad for eyes, even my eye doctor said that to me. How come Apple does not know this? Now I have to use transparent bar and don't have an option to get a normal one. Is it so difficult to do - no. Is it normal to have animation stuttering and sluggish on new computer? I don't think so. Not all behave like that I must say, but stacks in grid mode for example do.

About the shiny OS to me no.......to 90% of the computer using / buying public yes.....(see vista).
Are you saying that Tiger couldn't read a dvd drive or address the ram properly ? Of course it could....just like leopard can.....and as long as they both can most people couldn't give a toss how they do it..............Apple are supposed to be an "it just works" kind of company and with that type of marketing frankly they are not aiming to sell things to the likes of you and I who know how it works internally....more like our mum's who couldn't care less as long as it works.

With software as complex as an OS, it's impossible to release a version without bugs. There's no way a company can test the trillions of possible scenarios and configurations that can invoke a bug. Name one operating system that shipped without a single bug. Tiger is on it's 10th update release and it still has bugs. As long as software is being developed by humans, there will always be bugs.

I never had to update the operating system on my commodore 64 :)

If you can tell me one OS, software, harware or basicly anything in life made by man who is perfect then you're absolutely right. But i bet you can't.

I like the menu bar as it is and a lot of people like it too so it's not like apple put something in leopard than no one likes. Just because you don't like it it doesn't mean that it shouldn't be in leopard. But i agree that should be an option to use the regular menu bar. Maybe it will come in the next update.

You can't expect it to be perfect right away mainly because it's impossible to be perfect for everyone and because nothing is perfect.

And everyone knew about the transparent menu bar and stacks. If you didn't like it you could've just stick with tiger and bought Bootcamp separetely. You don't have to have leopard to have bootcamp.

Stacks do suck I agree, however the dock issue can be fixed with a simple terminal command.

Why do people insist on stating that Stacks sucks? As AppleInsider pointed out, Stacks was created to make it intuitively simple to get what you want with a minimal amount of clicks. Stacks also looks nice... The problem you guys with have with Stacks is that it has replaced hierarchal folders rather than with the feature itself.

Ah, were there still bugs though? I bet there were.

To tell you the truth i can't remember. Actually there probably wasn't .....then again there were not that many places to poke around......acutally that's not true there were loads......65536 actually with 255 combinations in each one....

Anybody remember what these ones did ? (it's strange that i can, i can't even remember what i did last week).

poke 53280,0
poke 53281,0

When I bought Apple I was surprised I could not customize basic things, highlight color in menus (I hate that bright blue).

Wait, are you telling me you can't edit the highlight color in Leopard? Why would that have changed? (I mean this):
attachment.php

Or are you talking about something else?

i'm with you there.
i can't believe apple calls it a unix system and then cripples such important options like nested folders in dock. there are pro-users too.

Hah. Brilliant.

Nested folders in the dock have nothing to do with the core of OS X as a unix system, and their absence doesn't mean OS X is crippled.

"Pro-users" use the command line. There can be no other way.
