just something simple for me

- ability to change alert tones (the ones preinstalled suck) without hack/jailbreak

This should have been enabled a long time ago, as you say, a very simple thing but it would make a lot of people happy.

I'd like to see more information shown on the lock screen. I've seen images of jailbroken phones that show emails, weather forcasts, rss feeds, etc and i think this is a must for next OS from Apple. There is so much wasted space on the lock screen that does nothing but show your wall paper.

I'd like emails to pop up like SMS do, just a quick show of who it's from and the subject.

Let's compile a list of features for iPhone 4.0, both for software and hardware. Post on this thread whatever you think will be in for iPhone 4.0 ( no brainers like the 64GB guess :p ) and the novelties you want! ;)

Honestly, stop it with these threads, 3.0 JUST came out (read: Australia) and people are already wanting 4.0?

Seriously, no give it a rest.

My small wishlist

Grand Central Dispatch
OpenCL
HD video recording
The option to allow certain apps into the multi-tasking party
Lithium Polymer battery with smart managment

Give us a shortcut to turning on/off wifi/bt/3g etc. Frustrating as heck that 2 years into the life of the iPhone we STILL have to go several menus down to toggle these things. Grr.

Landscape springboard.
Ability to swipe between open apps. (Think about browsing in Safari, text message comes in, press reply, send reply, and swipe back to where you left off.)
New ringtones and alert tones. Not everyone wants music.
Ability to dock more than 4 items on the springboard.

I'm hoping this is more of a 3.5 update and not a 4.0 one!

-Better management of notifications across the phone (swiping the menu bar for one)
-icons in the main menu that tell you that you have notifications
-in-app texting and email across the entire phone. I hate having to close pandora to reply to a text!

Background Audio

Apple should give all Audio Apps the ability to be in the background. That would be a BIG plus. They should help to make a special version of Pandora or something if they're stilling tripping over battery usage.

^+1

Just take the wishlists which were made for the 3g .

Enough stuff for apple to work on, i guess.

-Be able to reply to messages without exiting an app.
-Custom messaging alerts.
-Some sort of re-design of the springboard. (A Winterboard-like app would be awesome)
-A direct implant into my brain.
-The ability to make pigs fly.

I would like the ability to hide or delete some of the original apps like Stocks, and weather.

Oh and Cut, copy, and Paste. ;)

calender days show weather
weather app takes weather from gps on where you are

NOTIFICATIONS LIKE UPCOMING APPOINTMENTS ON THE UNLOCK SCREEN
excuse my outburst...i can't believe apple hasn't done this. i can't view my days appointments or upcoming at a glance without having to go into the calendar app

5 button dock
notification on unlock screen-# of e-mails
The ability to refuse (and not get charged for) text/MMS messages. I hate texting and wish it would die a fiery death.

No backgrounding applications

Whoever mentioned quicker access to wifi, airplane, etc. gets my vote.

A violet light saber blade shoots from the headphone jack, and maybe a force shield would be nice. Also if it could produce soft serve ice cream on command I don't think that would be too unreasonable!!

LMAO. Come on...the new phone hasn't even been released yet. This is thread is hugely premature.
