Real virtual memory
More memory
Faster CPU

The above will go a LONG way. App development is hindered by these current limitations. Try running any app in simulator and you'll see what I mean.

That's not software though. iPhone could really use another 192MB of ram though!

Software wise anybody knows if 3.0 is any faster than 2.2?? Did they take the snow leopard road, trying to optimize the OS or they just added new features and we will have to wait for 3.1,3.2 etc. for some of the lag to disappear. I really hope it's faster than 2.2.

Lag is my biggest complaint with the iphone. Its awful. 1.o software was fine but when 2.0 came out it ruined the speed of the phone.

also calendar events need to have a spot to add a phone number to the event and also a location so either can be pulled up wiht one click. Esp since there is no cut/paste

Keyboard Phone Entry

I would like to see the ability to quickly enter alphanumeric phone numbers by swiping to switch between keypad and keyboard (just like you swipe to go between home screen pages). For instance, 1-800-PETMEDS comes on TV... I hit keypad, dial 1-8-0-0, then swipe over to the keyboard to finish P-E-T-M-E-D-S... then hit call.

Did you happen to notice that those big buttons with numbers on them also have letters???

There comes a point where laziness gets to be ridiculous.

its not lazy, its convenient and saves time:p

but seriously i would love this feature also!

I can't possibly imagine how that could save any time, actually I can imagine that it would take longer due to the need for two more gestures to do what you can easily do on the phone keypad.

1- A gesture to get the QWERTY keyboard
2- A gesture to get back to the Alpha-Numeric keypad.

Better Maps

I would love to see a mapping, GPS, google-earth-like application that had more accurate map image data. The google image database, which most iPhone apps use, is very, very old. The one good thing about Microsoft Live Earth (or whatever it is called now) is that it is much more frequently updated.

I heard the GPS satellites might start malfunctioning due to their age. Now how am I ever going to find my way to work?

i could see this as a useful feature too because whenever i'm trying to dial a number like that i always say to my self "ok now where's the [insert letter here]" it would be faster to just type the letter.

This is hardware, not software, but I didn't see a separate thread for hardware, and I would like these to be attached to this "sticky" thread so that it is organized and hopefully the nice people that work at Apple will read this. Thank you. :)

14. Pendulums inside that generate electricity from kinetic energy and recharge the phone.

15. The ability to read text messages to me when I am driving, and ability of the phone to translate my voice to text messages when I am driving.

16. An option to lock the phone in landscape/portrait mode, for any application.

17. Ability to take a picture of a document and then search it for a word.

18. Ability to double as a USB flash drive and plug into any computer. (perhaps completely separate memory from the actual phone; to prevent viruses) Why? Because you will always have a flash drive with you then.

19. All cell phone towers have thermometers and the iPhones display the current temperature.

20. Built-in AM/FM radio receiver.

21. Dedicated, special layout of buttons for video game play. (think of a Nintendo controller)

1.) 5 MP Camera or even 1080p picture quality. Videos will also be great quality. Light flash as well.
2.)32 GB($199), 64 GB ($299) models
3.)RAM goes up to 512 MB, up from iPhone 3GS's 256. Ridiculously fast!
4.)Ability to handle 3G at immense speeds (7.2 Mbps and above) and capability to use 4G
5.)Video Conferencing with a front faced camera
6.)Wireless-N capability
7.)Battery will be 50-100% better than iPhone 3GS
8.)Phone will be much slimmer and the screen will be .5-1 inch bigger,
9.)Slider keyboard option
10.)OLED screen
11.)Flash built into software
12.)We already know that iPhone is more powerful than the PSP and DS combined, so maybe Apple can work on making the graphics closer to the PS2.
13. Ability to use the iPhone has a portable hard drive. This might be fixed in a firmware, but if we had 32 GB sitting in our pockets, it would be tremendously useful in so many circumstances.

Good ideas here.

....... hopefully the nice people that work at Apple will read this. Thank you. :)
The recent WWDC debuts give me hope that Apple is becoming more responsive to consummer demands or interests. Atleast the reworked Mac Books seem to indicate that Apple is becoming more agressive about features we want.
14. Pendulums inside that generate electricity from kinetic energy and recharge the phone.
My desire revolves around solar power collection. It would seem to me that even a few milliamps would help.

Along your lines though nano tech for mechanical energy harvest is coming along so hopefully this tech can firm up.
15. The ability to read text messages to me when I am driving, and ability of the phone to translate my voice to text messages when I am driving.

16. An option to lock the phone in landscape/portrait mode, for any application.
Apple if you are listening this is big. A mechanical switch would be nice. The idea is to be able freeze the phone in landscape mode while reading in odd positions.
17. Ability to take a picture of a document and then search it for a word.

18. Ability to double as a USB flash drive and plug into any computer. (perhaps completely separate memory from the actual phone; to prevent viruses) Why? Because you will always have a flash drive with you then.
I actually thought Apple had something coming along this line. Apparently not exactly what we want. IDisk acccess seems to be an attempt at something like this.
19. All cell phone towers have thermometers and the iPhones display the current temperature.
Nope, build the feature / electronics right into the iPhone. All you need is a diode exposed to the ouside Air. That and an analog channel on the CPU chip. All of this is dirt simple, refined technology and is likely already in the current iPhone to monitor chip temps.
20. Built-in AM/FM radio receiver.
At least FM which can be had for almost free. I suspect that Apple sees this as competition for iTunes but it really isn't. What it does do is it enhances the utility of the device.
21. Dedicated, special layout of buttons for video game play. (think of a Nintendo controller
A couple of general purpose input buttons would really help. My interest is the camera though. Touch is no way to trigger a camera to take a picture, especially now that we have tap to focus. Maybe my taps are to agressive but camera shake or movement just sucks. Look for such switches on the new iPod Touches though, as they would make more sense on that platform.

customizable text message alerts (like sync your own on)

I know this has probably been mentioned but all of the current choices either annoy me or freak me out every time I get a text. :D

Software
OS:
- Ability to change application icons via web or wifi.
- Ability to rename applications.
- Ability to place an icon anywhere on the grid without the others shifting to fill empty spaces.
- Auto-changing 'lock screen' wallpapers, they'd rotate through the contents of a specific album.
- Ability to hide unused system applications (Stocks, for example)
- A proper and organisable file and folder system.
Appstore:
- Ability to stream movies from the movie/tv store.

Hardware
Camera:
- Optical zoom, I don't mind a miniature lense that retracts flush with the body when not in use.
- Photobooth effects.
- The ability to link the iPhone up to a computer via USB and then use it as a webcamera for IM and such.
- Burst shooting mode.
Screen:
- OLED so that it is actually visible in sunlight.
Body:
- Brushed aluminium reverse, this would reduce scratches.

organzing apps

with so many apps and pages that apps can be installed, it would be seem logical to have a system to organize/move the apps easier.

-Ability to create aliases for programs so Spotlight searching is easier.

Example:

You try to search WeDict (a dictionary on your iPhone) through Spotlight. You know you have a dictionary, you just don't know what name the developer called it (same for Fandango with movies, etc...). If you would be able to allow Spotlight to find it by an alias, e.g. "Dictionary" it would find the associated app, in this case WeDict.

-Option to turn of accelerometers: Sometimes I want to read sideways in bed, ya know?

• Camera built in to the front above or below the earpice
• Ability to use the iphones HD as a storage device, like you can with ipods, that's one of the features i miss the most from my ipod.
• rss reader built in to safari
• Based on being able to use empty hd space on the iphone as a drive, have the function to save files from the web (a image or a sound to the hard disk portion of the iphone)
• Less exclusion for iphone owners that don't want to subscribe to the mobile me service, find my phone should be free to all iphone owners

Search Bar in SMS

A search feature in SMS would be nice. Sometimes I have LONG text conversations that go back more than a month and sometimes I want to look for something. A search bar would be great, but it should be in the SMS App and the Spotlight search should not go through SMS (maybe).

Notably missing:

Hardware

802.11n WiFi Networking. Broadcom offered a 802.11n capable chip due Q1 2009, as stated in a press release last fall. I really expected this to be included in iPhone 3Gs.

Software

Adblocking in Safari for God's sake! Why don't we have this already? It's a shame to waste precious mobile data resources on heavy ads :(

Though it seems like we've been given most of what I and many others have asked for since day one 2007.Future enhancements include a more sophisticated unobtrusive notification system ispired by Palm Pre's WebOS. Muli-tasking - making a fast, seemless, fluid experience to switch between applications and some general tweaking related to Snow Leopard like architecture.

Search option for SMS please

OS 3.0 Spotlight does not search through SMS. That is a huge disadvantage.
Any search for SMS would be nice...
