I really do not think apple is that dumb that they would not put LTE in their next phone. They would lose a ton of business and everyone knows that. Plus, that is a big incentive to get 4S users to upgrade.

Yep. LTE will be the reason I upgrade. Otherwise, my 4s is fine.

That is exactly how I feel. Bigger screen is nice and all, but NFC is not widely enough used (more of a bonus, wouldn't make me upgrade) and other internals are also nice but I would not notice in real world use. LTE is a must for me to upgrade from the 4S. I would have to either stick it out with the 4S or venture elsewhere b.c I have a huge itch for a new phone.

Problem is if you don't use it you assume others don't too. One size does not fit all.

I didn't assume others didn't use it, I said I didn't understand it
I am fully aware one size doesn't fit all, and I support choice for others
I realize everyone has their own work flow and usage patter based on social needs, age, location, WiFi availability and more

I appreciate your list of ways you choose to use data, since it gives me a comparison to my usage and why I don't use much data. I have WiFi at home and at work, and when I travel (which is a lot), I have WiFi at the hotel. It is rare that I have to rely solely on my data connection.

I personally use my iPhone and iPad as communication devices (calls, email, iMessage, FB, Twitter, etc), not as entertainment (streaming music, video, games, etc.) If I am on the web on my devices it is looking for something specific, not just browsing for entertainment. And as I said, even then, I have WiFi available most of the time.

App downloads - I download most of my apps on the computer and sync, and even then I don't download many now days since I have most of the ones I use regularly

youtube streaming - I have watched maybe 2 YouTube videos ever on my iPhone or iPad. I have never understood the fascination with watching YouTube. Occasional videos, yes, constant videos, no.

tethering - Here I could see data usage rise if used extensively, but only for my work usage (hence they supply me with a hotspot). I rarely, if ever, need tethering for personal use in a place where I don't get WiFi.

navigation - I use it occasionally, but I don't often travel to a place where I don't know where I am going and require it. I don't use it for traffic on a daily basis.

music and photo sharing - I do neither of these

cloud - I don't see much data usage here for me either. Most of my cloud activity takes place on my MBA through WiFi

internet radio - I stream Pandora occasionally, but that is either at home or in my office on my MBA and WiFi

internet video - I don't stream Netflix to my iPhone. I have watched some on my iPad in the past, but it was WiFi as well.

software updates - I update my apps on my computer and sync

I use my iPhone for calls, email, iMessage, weather, notes, occasional Facebook check in, Twitter, camera, calendar, alarm clock, etc.

My iPad for reading, email, iMessage, notes, documents, presentations, etc.

The issue in this thread isn't "who wants more/cheaper data at fast speeds"
It is emphasizing one over the other
Which would you rather have?
Obviously we would all want more data AND faster speeds
But which is more important to you?
Data or speed?

Some would choose the unlimited data with slower speeds
Others would pick faster speeds with lower data limits
I'm a faster guy, because my data needs are small
I have other ways to get my data, but when I need it on my iPhone/iPad I prefer it faster

I like simultaneous voice and data but the "speed" doesn't matter to me. I'm in a lte city but haven't been impressed by the recent speeds. When I had my thunderbolt I got 80–90 down, now as more ppl get lte phones I'm only getting 10–15. WiFi is faster so I stick with that. I live in nyc though so that could be why.

^ wait so can you do voice & data on any LTE phones or only 3 of them? Confused.

Anyway I care about 4G LTE and since I have unlimited it's time I started using my data plan. Switching to S3 in a couple days!

There are three phones that are capable 3G surf and talk. Tbolt, rezound, and s3 that I'm aware of. So three phone on Verizon will allow surf and talk on the 3G network... All LTE phones will allow surf and talk on the LTE network. For me, I choose the iPhone but will not have surf and talk until the LTE device is released. I'm also venturing a guess that the new iPhone will not support surf and talk over 3G so again I'm limited to using LTE for what I find an important feature. But it was not important enough to switch carriers.

i care! here is my ipad

Wasn't talking about the max speed, just the netflix usage. You said 2 MB/s, I provided official netflix documents saying otherwise. I don't know how you can really argue with that.

More than likely you were seeing other apps using data.

Arguing? My iPad has a resolution higher than HD, thus it could easily be drawing down 5 megaBITS/s, which translates to over 600 kiloBYTES/s.

Is 8 megaBYTES/s an overstatement? Probably. But I laugh at the thought of my super-HD iPad 3 using less than 250 kiloBTYES/s when it's streaming HD over LTE. Do you have an iPad 3 with these personal experiences over LTE?

And you are crazy for thinking that these "reccomendations" (note that they aren't STATISTICS or FACTS, but "suggestions") are going to decrease over time. Screen resolutions and networks are increasing in size and speed, so expect HIGHER download rates, not lower.

I will probably upgrade, but only because AT&T 3G is so unreliable here in Austin, TX.

When it works, the speeds of 4-5 mbps are more than sufficient for my needs. Unfortunately, it is rarely that fast in practice . . . and in the parts of town that I frequent, often doesn't work at all.

Just curious - is LTE more reliable than 3G? If it were, it might matter to me once the UK gets LTE.

What do you mean by more reliable? If you do not get service in a certain area, that will not change. 3G currently has more coverage than LTE

I meant that what is the likelihood of keeping a signal once you have one? How quickly does it take to acquire a signal compared to 3G?

Eh i would take cheaper data. But faster and cheaper would not hurt :)

For as much damn money that we pay these cell phone providers we should have the latest and greatest technology and they should be developing the next big thing as we speak.

Yes it would be nice to know that this may be capable but here in the UK, we don't care as we don't have 4G

Your iPad is higher resolution than 1080p but netflix doesn't stream higher than 1080p. Your iPad scales it. Where exactly would netflix get all that content at higher than 1080p?

You're arguing with specs put out by the manufacturer. There's no argument to be had here.

edit: Looks like true HD streaming isn't even available for iPad yet. Link. Probably because it uses too much data.

3 gigs or so is a normal afternoon at the park or beach. Nothing special even, just some slingplayer and some web surfing. maybe use logmein to log into work for a minute. But sitting at a park bench, have a bear (or a beer, your choice) and watch the girls jog by for a few hours and I have burned three gigs or so.

Thats kind of light usage I think. Not doing any serious work or anything, and not sitting there all day either.
I say this with no disrespect intended, but honestly, you aren't even close to a "normal" user.

If 3 gigs or so is a normal afternoon at the park or beach, your idea of a day at the park or beach is way different from mine.

I would never disparage anyone for the choices they make. Obviously, your choice is to be on your phone, using data constantly. Others may choose to interact with people more in lieu of this.

Bottom line, if you are using 3gb of data in one sitting, you are way, way, way over the norm.

Just sayin'.

Have to agree with cardinalryan on this one. In what way do you think using slingplayer for a few hours is light usage? There probably aren't many more bandwidth intensive apps that you could run. What you're doing is actually very heavy usage.

I said in the park for a few hours, slingplayer is only used for a quarter of that time. Its hard to even watch a whole 30 minute show. But lets say thirty minutes to an hour on sling, and the rest browsing the web and maybe downloading a rom, or using logmein.

That is light usage my friend.

A guy using his connection to run his xbox, and home computer and house all day long and burning 100, 150, 200+ gigs plus a month is heavy usage.

Obviously not higher than 1080p, and obviously to the scaling portion. And 720P is still classified as HD, so what I said about HD is true.

I have a jailbreak tweak that measures up/down load speeds, I'll have to post pictures of the results, because it's definitely not using the "measly 250kiloBYTES/s" defended by both yourself and the other poster.

And AGAIN, if 1080P streaming over cellular data isn't permitted due to excessive data usage, then they are admitting to the same problem this thread poses - Our data caps are unfairly low.
