I don't get it. If you really, truly hate the new one then get a leftover old one or refurb or 17".

the 17" isn't an option - it's too heavy for my purposes (I carry that thing around 7 days a week). I tried to get my hands on a previous model but they were sold out within days after the announcement of the glossy-things (guess why). Refurbs aren't readily available in Switzerland and I'd never buy a used notebook off ebay or similar sites. I might be weird in that way - but I hate used stuff. Except perhaps for cars, where the price difference is 80%.

Apart from that: I wholeheartedly agree with you. I'm basically throwing in the towel by buying one of these suckers. But you can rest assured that I will keep on protesting here and directly to Apple (which I already have, btw.). And I also won't defend my purchase.

Let's be clear. Protesting here will do squat with changing Apple's opinion. Anyone who thinks Apple monitors forums here for opinions is delusional. Complaining to Apple might help, but purchasing a new machine is going to make a bigger impression that they are correct. Good luck.

agreed, the thing is - I need the MBP for my photo work

It helps in some small way. The more people make noise, the greater the chance the ripples will reach Apple.

You might be able to find an old one at places other than Apple. I know Macconnection (www.macconnection.com) still has some although I'm not familiar with international shipments. I'd check some of the websites first if I were you.

Just a suggestion, I'm from Austria and just received my new-old 2,5 ghz matte mbp which I ordered from Germany. I got a great deal. If you want pm me and I'll give you the contact of the German store I ordered it from. Maybe they still have some around.

thanks - the problem is that we're using different keyboards here :-(

In the next big redesign of the Macbook Pro 4 years from now. Just to spite his critics, Steve Jobs will be introducing the all new Macbook Chrome.

the next MBPs display will be see-through. A totally ultracool and industry-leading development. When asked what to do about the objects behind the notebook shining through and annoying the heck out of the user, Steve Jobs says "either place the MBP against a wall or stick a sheet of white paper to the back of the display using scotch tape".

Picked one up today. Sorry, but I need to shoot a wedding this Saturday and need a notebook.

I've only used it for 45 minutes. But I can say without any doubt that the screen's even worse than I thought (and I thought it was pretty darn bad).
I spent the 45 minutes of usage trying to get it calibrated with a Spyder 3 Pro. Took me about 10 attempts and only when I moved down to the bomb shelter, where it's absolutely dark, did I manage to get a profile without a (noticeable) color cast. I posted the result in the ICC profiles thread, if you're interested.

Mine seems to be half-way evenly lit but the colors still seem off (hard to put my finger at how exactly, they just look odd / too vivid). The screen's extremely bright (too bright, I think) and the glare is horrendous :-(

Will decide next week if I keep it or not.

Have you tried this thread? https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/588565/

Also when you calibrated, did you have it take into account the ambient light measurements? It's best to calibrate in the dark anyways...

Also, the manufacture of the screen matters too..

So that means its the MacBook Pro 13"

The 12" Powerbook was lower spec than the 15" Powerbook and we considered that a Pro machine.

The white macbook should be renamed iBook.

The new notebooks should be renamed PowerBooks.

Case closed.

I got the 9C85 model - who's the manufacturer of these? Yes, took ambient light into account (the Spyder 3 Pro measures the ambient light before calibrating). I tend to calibrate in the environment that I'll be mostly working in - but that's definitely not possible with the MBPs (unless your work environment is a pitch-black bomb-shelter :)

It's hard to find yourself liking something, when you have negative feelings about the object before you even buy it.

Personally, I love my new MBP 2.53.. this whole screen issue (and FW400 issue for that matter as well) is no different than any other Apple redesign. Remember all of the threads regarding switching to Intel? Embrace the changes, or find a new notebook manufacturer.

Uhhh all people want is the choice to be theirs to make. Its like if Porsche suddenly stopped offering the Turbo in both 6 speed true manual and tiptronic, and instead forced the tiptronic option onto all of their loyal customers. Who cares if the tiptronic option is faster/better on paper, some people want their luxury sports car from Porsche to have 3 pedals and a 6 speed shifter. Its no different with Apple and the MBP. Yes there may be instances where the new design and glossy outer shell excel.... BUT SO WHAT?! People know what they want and like. Its absolutely stupid to force a preference change onto customers with regard to premium products. Period.

The 9C85 (Chi Mei) uses a crappier panel, in my opinion. See if you can get your MBP exchanged for one that has a 9C84 panel (LG).

It would be helpful if you knew what you were talking about. Seriously, your argument is not well laid out, nor is it particularly correct. Basically you don't like the fact that they used black on the screen bezel and keyboard and that it doesn't have some of what you have determined are the most important features (to you!).
