Vote with your wallet

Jeez, just vote with your wallet; the only real thing Apple cares about.

If enough people buy it, it's a success no matter what the OP or others say. If you don't Apple, being a revenue hungry machine, will figure out what people want and sell it to them.

Apple is happy to lead with innovation but if no one follows they will change tack. They need the quarterly numbers.

Don't like. Don't complain. Just don't buy one.

New MBP has to change

True words of wisdom.

There are more people not liking the new glass screens, loose hinges, and the new trackpad. Yes the hardware and the unibody is very strong. On can not find similar machine. But this is just a compromise. Ask yourself. If you were asked to upgrade your earlier MBP, how will you make it to be happy with it. Will you make it black bazel and loose screens? Would you take the mouse button off and make the whole thing trackpad? NO

We are accepting all this, I think it is just a compromise because we do not have a choise. Now having said that, some consumers might like all this, so that is good. But the majority professionals will not like it. Macbook PRO ends with a name pro and this is just not a pro machine. When someone is working on the go, the trackpad should not have been so much difficult. Some one working in the plane will be unhappy because of the reflections and the angle at which the MBP will be used. All I am asking is for thousands of people to officially write one letter to Apple to just bring the matte screens back. Black bazel and keyboad to silver/while is optional.

Thanks,
BPN

I've been an avid Apple fan for decades, but this new laptop generation is making me fall out of love. I'm really angry that they not only designed away the option for matte screens, but made the screens uber-glossy by putting glass on top of gloss. And adding that cheesy black mirror bezel just added insult to injury.

I didn't like some of the changes at first, but after I actually checked one out in person and tried it out, I'm trying to save up to upgrade. The black bezel gives the colors even more pop, loose screens isn't an issue for me (I've had laptops in the past with extremely loose screens and there's always a solution for any problem), and the trackpad works great (I can leave my thumb where the old button used to be and it won't treat that as a gesture finger). Have you actually tried one out? If not, judge it after you give it a spin.

I thought it was just the glass that made it reflective and not the fact there's a layer of gloss underneath...

Yes, I was using the new MBP for a week before I returned it. It is the fastest and the best laptop one can ever own. Plus the design and build is also good. No one can compete apple in terms of innovation. But thi time they concenrtated on the consumer market. macbook and the pro version should have been different. Similar is fine but atleast the option of choosing matte screen. And yes, the trackpad is not as good as it should be. To use it efficiently, one has to use fingers carefully. Not a good idea in my mind.
But having said, I will still but it if they do not change it. For now I have the old MBP.
Thanks,

No, there's also a glossy panel beneath the glass. Glossy panels are less expensive to manufacture, so it's obvious why Apple chose to put them under the glass.

If this is true, Apple is charging the same amount of money for cheaper stuff and increasing profits. Apple has always been a different company and neven compromised like microsoft. Otherwise they would have made OS general by now. But I see it coming. I am sure they will legally make hakintosh available to all those interested. Anyway, this is not the case. New MBP definately is a bad choice.
Thanks,

Thanks,

On the contrary, I don't see Apple allowing their OS to run on other hardware ever. They're earning enormous profit margins on their hardware, largely because they have absolutely no competition. If manufacturers like Psystar win out and multiply, the heat will be on Apple to reduce their margins. So I don't see Apple going willingly into that situation.

I want the glossy screen gone and the battery life improved to a level that is at least as good as the old model.

How about 2x FW800 ports each with their own individual bus?

If you don't like the new model, that's fine. But this opinion isn't universal. I'm coming from a previous pro (with a matte screen) and I like this new one better in every way so far. Nobody is forcing me into, I like the changes including the black bezel and the black keyboard. I always hated the silver keyboard. In dim light the backlight was terrible before in that it made the keyboard and the backlight the same so you couldn't see the keys! The black with backlighting is 10x more functional. Yet people here trash the black keyboard because it's not "pro" enough.

We'll see how people vote with their wallets. I've yet to see a new model introduced that people in forums like this didn't trash for various reasons. But Apple seems to keep selling and making more money.

The powerbook G3 was the last thing that was actually a cut above it's competitors.

This isn't exactly a new phenomenon.

Also:

If you need accurate mouse work, why are you using a track pad in the first place?

I've never seen anything "trashed" to the extent that this redesign has been. This level of dissatisfaction is unprecedented. As I said earlier, I think Apple will sell a lot of these laptops to dissatisfied people who will buy them because they have no other option.

I'll agree that the painted silver keys were a bad idea. I never understood why Apple got rid of the black keys on the Titanium PowerBook in favor of something that showed wear and tear as horribly as the silver keys did. Anything that isn't painted is an improvement over the silver keys. However, I've not had any problem with the backlighting being difficult to see; it's crisp and clear on my Early '08 MBP.

It can be difficult to see in certain lighting. In dim but not dark lighting the backlight comes on a little but the ambient light is enough that the silver with white backlighting blends together. I used to get this all time.

I guess I don't have that problem because I only turn on the backlighting when I need it.

Firewire 800

I need to apologize first I think because I'm quite new to Macs even though we have 3 iMacs in the office and we're thinking of getting a new Macbook Pro, launched recently. I just want to ask about the Firewire 800 -- is the cable the same as the Firewire 400 that connects to a DV camera?

minang is trying to divert this thread. This thread is not atall for the question you asked. This thread is for new MBP owners and their views. I am reading lots of people who agree with my views. I like that, this way something will happen and apple will bring back the Matte screen.

Yes, count me in. I've been waiting for a couple of weeks now but I need a notebook - after having taken home our department's HP a couple of times, I've decided that I can't and won't go back to windows. So I'll be heading to the nearest Apple store today and purchase one of these suckers. Which won't mean I'll stop complaining about the glossy screen. IT SUCKS. And I hate Apple for having made that choice.

Does anyone know if Apple does any sort of focus group testing prior to launch? It seems like Apple now days tried to keep such a tight lid on product introductions that they totally forget about the end user.

It's almost like they have the mentality..."We like it...screw you if you don't"

I've been using Apple notebooks since the old G3 Pismo and have purchased the every new model since. This is the first time in my lifetime that I've been so displeased with an Apple product.

They could have made the thing out of crappy dell plastic, and I'd still be happy. But please bring back a decent screen.

Steve...you want glossy...fine. BUT NO GLASS PLEASE!!! I still pulled out my old MacBook Pro Glossy and MacBook Air and I couldn't believe how much better it is in terms of reflections.

SJ...you spoke in your Q4 conference call about how you have the most loyal customers in the world and how they wouldn't leave Apple in this economy. While many will continue to be loyal during this tough economic time, I feel that Apple has not been loyal to the concerns of its customers.

I sincerely hope that you will reconsider the direction of Apple's notebooks.

I don't get it. If you really, truly hate the new one then get a leftover old one or refurb or 17". By buying a new 15" you are just telling Apple "good job". Both you and ftbps rail against the new design but buy one? Geez!
