I'm currently using a spec'd-up i7 27" 2020 iMac 128GB memory that I run at 2560x1440 - I'm 64 and need reading glasses from time to time! - along with a 2024 14" M4 MacBook Pro base spec, so 16GB.

I run all the usual office apps but also do photo-editing in Lightroom and the occasional vide editing in Final Cut Pro.

On the iMac, I could do with some more real estate, as I am often referring to one document on screen whilst writing another one, and it's a bit of a pain to use the MacBook and extend that desktop onto the iMac.

When macOS 27 is released, it will drop support for Intel Macs, so I am thinking of buying a Mac mini once they're updated, and in the meantime maybe switching to using the MacBook with the new screen I'd need for the Mac mini. That would save having both the iMac and MacBook powered up all the time.

I read the reviews of the LG 32" UltraFine 6K 32U990A-S but see that I could "save" £400 by going with the curved 40” LG UltraFine 5K2K 40U990A-W.

Has anyone owned/tried both and can make recommendations for my type of usage? I don't do any gaming or watch movies on them.

LG quality is crap. Frequent issues - easy to find if you google.

I bought/returned the 6K because uniform white images displayed as splotchy-blue (on my channel if you want to see) on a $2,000 screen.

I have two LG DualUps and both developed blue hues, uneven colors right after one year of ownership (right outside the warranty).

Google “lg power supply issues” as well.

Go with a better brand.

I have the LG UltraGear OLED 4K 31.5 monitor. I have never liked it and decided after the return period to return. I don't like the firmware on the monitor. The inputs sometime change the resolution and I have plug and unplug to get the right resolution. I really want to get the Apple Studio Display. I just can't justify paying over $1,600 for a monitor. I think I eventually break down and buy it. I tried the BenQ MA270S and it is a nice screen. It just did not work form me.

I looked at both these monitors and got neither for a number of reasons:
The 40" ultrawide was what I was looking for but ended up getting a Kuycon P40K which is also a 40" Ultrawide with better quality and much cheaper (and flat Vs. The curved LG) and also uses an LG IPS black panel. This monitor started the rabbit hole for me which got me to replace my second screen as well and I considered the 32" 6K from LG and ended getting the Kuycon G32P. That on is still on a boat but there is an entire thread in this forum discussing it with a lot of positive experiences. It boast an earlier version of the same LG panel as the LG monitor. Because I do not care for the Hub/KVM, the looks and quality of the build tilted the decision.

Kuycon is even worse than LG. They are off-brand panels and take shortcuts. Good luck getting customer service when they fail. Not sure if that is a serious endorsement or casual ad placement on a forum…

OP buy from a reputable company (Dell, Apple) and to answer original question, if you will need multiple screens, then get the 32 inch and get screens around it, because 40 inch is too big to put screens around it in my opinion. otherwise, based on what you described 40 inch (ultrawide 32”) will be perfect for final cut and productivity (single monitor).

No sure where you are getting this from. Seems to be a lot of baseless speculations, especially on the off-brand panels. The reality is that many have already reported eventless returns and support when they had problems and that quality is only second to Apple. My own experience has been nothing short of stellar... at least so far.
