I get you, but I'll explain....(TV's to washing machines...love it)

The cycle takes about 2-3 hours, and we sleep about 7-8. If you leave damp clothes in the drum for several hours, it'll go musty, so you just set everything to start washing at around 4am so when you're up at 7am, you just empty the machine and put your clothes to dry. Just convenience.

Not just convenience, but also economy. Electricity is often cheaper (and greener) at 4am, so you can save money on your electric bill by scheduling dishwashers, clothes washers, etc on a timer.

The LG iOS app can turn the TV off, but not on. WT*?
And it makes me choose my TV from a list of exactly one TV every time it launches.

Otherwise it's a great TV that still supports 3D and everything important (4K, HDR, OLED).
You can have the TV turn on/off when AppleTV turns on/off, through the AppleTV remote and the HDMI cable. I have also made the volume on AppleTV remote change the volume on the home theater system (Denon), but still didn't manage to have it turn on/off, probably as the hdmi is going to tv directly.

Would have loved HomeKit support on my LG E8 OLED. But no biggie, I already have it connected via HomeBidge which gives me all the support I need. ”Hey Siri, turn off the TV“ is one of the biggest uses for our HomePod! And HomeBridge is very easy to set up. Oh and the Apple TV app on LG TVs is crappy so I still use an Apple TV.

Also have “switch to live TV”, “watch Netflix (turn on TV, switch to ATV input, start Netflix, show Remote on iPhone)“ shortcuts set up too.

In fairness, you do get to see your TV on your HomeKit devices. Not that you can do much with it anyway. And a true classic fail. The moment you turn off your TV, you can no longer turn it on using HomeKit because it disconnects itself from the network. 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

Even better.....Smart Things is just as crummy. We have a washing machine with "smart" controls. Brilliant I thought! I can load up my machine at night, and have it ready for me in the morning or when I'm back from work!

No....not so smart at all. Firstly, you must remember to turn on the "smart mode", otherwise it's as dumb as every other machine out there. And you cannot apply any automation rules to it using the native app.

I've managed to work it out using Home Assistant running on my Raspberry Pi, but truly tell me how many families do that level of automation and custom coding in their homes?!?!!?

These companies are just muppets who want to add "smart" to everything, but the reality is they are as useless as a tin of dried up paint.
Can't you use time delay so it will finish when you like?

First thing I did with my 65” LG 2017 was update it to whatever was current at the time, then disconnected it completely from the network. I’m free of their ads, spying and updates that could potentially mar or slow down the OS experience.

The inbuilt OS is pretty decent as far as tv’s go, I use the native functionality for playback of locally stored x264 & x265 content all the time, works really well off a couple of 4TB hdd’s I’ve attached.

Apple TV 4K for everything else.

I LOVE this tv, played 1000s of hours of video games on it, experienced image retention once (waaaaay too much Stardew Valley :) ), it quickly went once I quit.

This is exactly why I wish Apple would come out with an actual TV set. Having an Apple TV box doesn’t stop this kinda crap from happening, my B6 OLED from 2016 is old at this point but I have no dbout in my mind that Apple would enable HomeKit support. I currently use homebridge for HomeKit support but the experience is poor, it doesn’t work well with scenes, is very slow and shouldn’t be necessary in the first place...
But then you would owe Apple 30% everytime you watch a movie ...

Errr... You realize the phrase "no plans" means "I don't know for sure" or "we can't say yet"?

There is a very good chance that they won't bring this to 2018 LG TVs, but just the fact they sent a tweet saying "no plans" doesn't actually mean much.

Why do I say this? Cuz this is common corporate speak for unreleased products/updates, and to further drive home the point, LG also said they had "no plans" to bring the 48" CX OLED TV to Canada and then literally just a couple of weeks later there were 48" CX OLED TVs actually available in Canada from big mainstream vendors such as Best Buy.

LG OLED owner here, purchased the TV purely for the picture quality combined with an Apple TV. Still rubbish level of support.

I was pissed about no AirPlay 2 on my 2016 LG Oled. Then I realised I haven’t used my Apple TV for ages. It’s just been gathering dust. So, I guess it’s ok.

Considering Apple TV and atv app has like 2% of market I wouldn’t be in a rush to add it either. Just buy apple’s ancient Apple TV. Be one of the few. I have 3 of them.

FYI, this isn’t something that can simply be replaced by buying an Apple TV.

HomeKit support in the TV means that using the virtual Apple TV remote on your phone, you can still control volume on your TV and do other stuff like changing to input back to cable box to momentarily check something then back to Apple TV.

Having an Apple TV obviously makes the airplay stuff redundant and also let’s you ignore the TVs crappy, out of date built in apps - but the HomeKit support is something you can’t fully replicate with just an Apple TV.
Correct. You also can’t turn an Apple TV on and off via HomeKit, so no scene automation. You can make Siri Shortcuts to do it. But as we all know. Siri Shortcuts can’t be Automated without user prompts. (Not real automation).

I assume you’re in the EU (or recently left!)

EU regulations stipulate that a TV in standby mode cannot consume more than a certain amount of power. Therefore, almost all TVs turn off their network cards in standby, hence why you cannot turn on from the app.

The EU yet again ruining customer enjoyment for a saving of roughly 3p a year.

I always doubted this. I have an older WebOS TV and they haven’t bothered to update it... well, ever, really.

I was hoping for better from WebOS, but oh well. Same old story of companies not supporting their products.

I bought a cheap 43" LG tv for my office, solely on the Homekit/Airplay Support promised on the box, figuring I could save myself a few bucks not buying another AppleTV. But the WebOS can't remember the wifi info and requires you to reset the TV and set up the connection again (losing all of your logins). I should return it. but that means disassembling the mount and taking it down and putting it in the box and shipping it and being without a TV.

Surely there is scope for legal action here.

Anyone who bought an LG TV on the basis of promised features which were then not delivered should be entitled to compensation, or a refund.

*Laughs in Ring, Simplisafe, and countless others.*

Anyone who bought an iPhone on the promise of AirPower should be compensated too :)

That's just a power setting. If you turn on energy saving, it shuts off entirely. If energy saving is off it maintains its network connection and does automatic updates and whatnot. I can definitely turn on my LG C9 from the Home app or through Siri.

Query: is 3D meant to be included in “everything important” or is it a separate thing outside of “everything important?”

Samsung haven't got it then. If I turn on smart controls, it locks the door, so I'm unable to add any more into the machine.... 🤦‍♂️

This is why I have an Apple TV. I have no trust in TV manufacturers. Oh, and I hate their ****** android interface. Oh, and did I mention they put ads on my android home screen?

That is why I want an actual Apple TV, not Set top Box. I dont want an Android TV.

Haha!

Some random forum post I read years ago brilliantly summed up 3D.

“3D is great. It comes around every 20 years and reminds you how great 2D is.”
