Surely there is scope for legal action here.

Anyone who bought an LG TV on the basis of promised features which were then not delivered should be entitled to compensation, or a refund.

I am wondering, doesn't LG update their TV every year? Meaning most would have bought it before the AirPlay 2 support announcement. And 2018 Model would be mostly sold out in the Channel.

In April, LG indicated in a support document that it planned to add AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support to some of its 2018 smart TVs by October 2020, including LCD models with "SK" or "UK" in the name and OLED models with "B8" through "Z8" in the name.

...

The development is likely to cause consternation and anger among LG customers, especially anyone who bought a 2018 TV based on LG's update plan, not to mention the almost 22,000 LG TV owners who believed their petition calling for the company to bring the support had resulted in success.

Sloppy writing. If LG made this promise in April 2020, then people couldn't have been buying TVs in 2018 on the expectation that AirPlay 2 support was coming. And somehow I am skeptical there's been a surge in two-year-old LG TV sales since April.

I don't doubt it's irritating to people who were hoping for this. But really - if you've owned a so-called Smart TV before, you already know that the "Smart" part is pretty ephemeral. Companies only support these apps for a few years - a much shorter period than a typical person actually keeps a television (even if the manufacturers keep hoping we'll start treating our TVs like smartphones). You're much better off just buying a relatively cheap Apple TV / Roku / Fire Stick and hooking it up to the TV.

I own a C7, the panel is incredible, but the software? Absolute trash. I don’t touch it and use my Apple TV. It’s so bad though, that trying to get to switch between inputs is a chore and it’s constantly turning on my PlayStation and other stuff when it shouldn’t be, something my cheap Visio before it had no issues with. Too bad my only other OLED option on the market is Sony - at double the price for similar picture quality performance.

Reminder that LG has the worst customer service and refuse to properly support their expensive OLEDs which have really cheap parts inside.

Wow, my cheap Vizio G-series got AirPlay2 in a firmware update. What's the point of buying a premium brand if you don't get premium features OTA?

It’s simple in the UK. Buy from either John Lewis or Richer Sounds, get inclusive extended warranty = win. 6 year warranty on the previous tv I bought from Richer Sounds, a Samsung. It developed a fault about 4 years in, they fixed it no issue and no cost to me.

As opposed to awful places like Curry’s, where you pay through the nose for an extended warranty, the first two years of which you’re covered under EU law anyway.

As for 2018 models not getting Airplay 2, there’s never been a culture of old tv’s getting extensive updates. Sure, in an ideal world they would, but a lot of misplaced whining in here.

TV and audio makers have a terrible track record of updating software in their recent models. I have a 2017 LG OLED TV and the software updates have been nearly non-existent. Same for a Denon receiver that now works poorly with Airplay2.

I guess they expect me to spend thousands every year on new hardware to get updates software. Not going to happen.

It make me appreciate much more the support that Apple gives to older products.

This is why I have an Apple TV. I have no trust in TV manufacturers. Oh, and I hate their ****** android interface. Oh, and did I mention they put ads on my android home screen?
Yep, get an AppleTV, and treat the TV as a monitor. I haven’t used any of the built-in apps in my TV.

First thought looking at that picture: man that’s a pretty room. Followed by: WhyTF is the TV on a shelf instead of wall mounted, and where are the speakers? You put a spendy TV in that nice of a setting and you use the built-in speakers?

Ironically, my 2018 LG TV just got the Apple TV app last month.
Fine, but the AppleTV app just mostly lets you get to Apple’s TV+ streaming service. It’s nothing like an actual hardware AppleTV. Apple... did a certifiably dumb thing in naming - “Apple TV” hardware, “TV” app, “ Apple TV+” streaming service... really Apple? You couldn’t have named at least one of them something else? Call the streaming service “ping” or “doorknob”, or anything, and people will learn to associate that random name with your service soon enough.

Ive had an Apple TV for years. Its by far the most stable of all "Smart streaming" Devices. I was looking for a dumb TV but all they sell now are smart TVs so I decided to at least get something with HomeKit. I have a newer 2020 LG TV with these features. Honestly you are not missing out on much. Home kit is buggy had to change a bunch of settings to get it to work properly. It also is buggy with the remote. If you have the "Smart LG Remote configure to another device HomeKit on the TV will not work right and cause issues with turning on and off the TV within home kit. LG support was useless. Right now the best setup is just to use a streaming device in my case an Apple TV. As for the home kit function I have it trigger my lights on and off in the bedroom when I turn on the TV. The most useful thing with having HomeKit is to turn it off if you left the TV on and you leave the house. Other than that its not like you can control the TV with HomeKit.

My understanding is that there are hardware support requirements for video Airplay 2 and it's not just as simple as porting it back, so I was quite surprised it was promised for older models in the first place tbh.

I have a 2020

but I can see why this would upset people. You only provided one year of updates.

I'm a fan of LG, but it's something I would consider in the future.

I wasn't really expecting those features to come to my LG OLED65B7 (2017), but enabling 2018 TVs gave me 0.01% hope.

Which is gone 😂

Oh well. I have an Apple TV anyways, and might buy the next version if there's interesting new features besides speed (because except for games that are far from being console-quality, I don't feel like there's anything slow about this product).

I stopped getting high end TVs after Panasonic essentially stopped updating their ST30 after like a year (currently have a TCL HDR/Dolby TV I got for like $600). TVs are incredibly stupid these days as manufactures act like they are cell phones. For one, the size of TVs make it harder to upgrade. Secondly, they lose their value fast. 3, why not just put a super cellphone chip in the TVs? They basically are doing one thing.

FYI, this isn’t something that can simply be replaced by buying an Apple TV.

HomeKit support in the TV means that using the virtual Apple TV remote on your phone, you can still control volume on your TV and do other stuff like changing to input back to cable box to momentarily check something then back to Apple TV.

Having an Apple TV obviously makes the airplay stuff redundant and also let’s you ignore the TVs crappy, out of date built in apps - but the HomeKit support is something you can’t fully replicate with just an Apple TV.

Apple TV box isn't a perfect solution. But it is a much better alternative instead of buying another TV set. Especially if you still have pre 2019 LG OLED that works fine beside the crappy, short-lived software support.

I've still been getting updates on my LG OLED from 2018. So maybe 2 years of updates.

AirPlay 2 support may not be included, but that doesn't mean all updates stopped. I'm surprised they offered it in the first place actually. It's been an interesting sequence of events though. Somebody at LG said it would be offered, but then shortly afterwards they said there were "no plans" to do so, and then later they said they may indeed bring it, and now they said they have "no plans" again.

But like I said before, it's hard to interpret these statements. As I mentioned, LG reps in Canada said there were "no plans" to bring the LG 48" CX OLED to Canada, but then did very shortly afterwards. Best Buy Canada is selling them now. Low stock, but available nonetheless.

I don't use most of the apps either, and actually have an Apple TV 4K attached to that 2018 LG OLED.

I do often use the Prime Video app on the TV over the one on Apple TV though. They both suck, but sometimes the one on the TV sucks less.

I am one of the customers with a 2017 LG OLED. Never again. Waste of money as far as features and support are concerned. Good picture quality yes but they will leave all of you in the dust just wait.

I’d be happy with the apple tv app on my b7v - can’t see any reason why they can’t do it!
