Apple, this is absolute BS.

My $3000+ Mac Pro Tower 2012, which has a GTX 980 Ti, can't be used with this because of a stupid connection issue?

This company is in awful shape, and Tim is making it harder and harder to stick with MacOS.

1. Apple has left Display Business
2. Display Business replaced by LG monitors
3. LG Displays are overpriced and not fully compatible with legacy Apple products

Guys, Tim Cook seriously has to leave.
Go and troll somewhere else.

Step 1: Stop selling Apple branded monitors.
Step 2: Sell a 3rd party monitor that people won't buy.
Step 3: Claim that the monitor business is dead as no one is buying monitors from Apple.
Step 4: Remove external display capabilities from all new laptops claiming it saves weight and power.

Apple used to try to be something special. With this monitor it shows that they don't even want to be in the game any more. Next year's keynote will be about how well a Microsoft Surface tablet can run IOS and macOS apps.

Nothing about my post is trolling.
If it wasn't trolling, it was ignorant.

Complaining that your 2012 Mac Pro won't work with a Thunderbolt 3 monitor is like complaining that your Tesla won't take gas.
Tim Cook is irrelevant here.
Apple isn't in poor shape by any metric.
LG monitors are simply not overpriced. This is the cheapest 5K display on the market.

The Mac Pro can't support 5k resolution. Apple sure has their priorities straight...

With the ultra fine display you mean?

Dual-Cable Displays
Some displays with resolutions higher than 4K require two DisplayPort cables to connect the display at full resolution:

  • The Dell UP2715K 27-inch 5K display is supported by iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) and later and Mac Pro (Late 2013) running OS X Yosemite v10.10.3 and later.
  • The HP Z27q 5K display is supported by iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) and later and Mac Pro (Late 2013) running macOS Sierra.

Tip-o-my hat! Best internet comment of the week!

What an incredibly stupid comment.

I think it's completely fair to complain my 2012 Mac Pro $3,700 spec'd machine doesn't fully work with a monitor Apple released in 2016, especially when Apple monitors were in need of an upgrade in resolution for a very long time.

Also, your analogy sucks. It would more accurate if Tesla used to support BOTH gas and electricity but 4 years later, Teslas no longer took gas.

Seems pretty clear you'll never be happy with Apple going forward. Why not just make the switch now, finally find happiness, and move on with your life?

Sure beats expectinting Apple to accede to your needs and demands, knowing that five years from now you'll still be here, waiting for Apple to come to their senses and do what you want, and in the end never being satisfied.

Better make sure it works with the G5's while they're at it. The current screen with mine is ready for a refresh.

LOL - the best GPU - 460 Pro in the MacBook Pro 2016 is low end GPU, Based on the 460RX but slower.

These days, a GPU that can handle 5K is not a good indication of how powerful the graphics card actually is.

And what happens to those of us that bought the nMP already? Funny how Apple gave us a machine that can't be expanded and is limited in what displays it can run even though it has a monster dual GPU...

Why would anyone pay ~1k for a 5K display then run it (poorly) at 4K resolution? Argh.

You can if they are dual cable MST displays like the ones made by HP and Dell.

3 of those?

Um, Apple didn't release a monitor in 2016.

Presenting LG's display was an elegant way of saying they are out of the monitor business.

I understand that you are pissed, but why not get 4K displays instead? There are some really good and affordable ones out there.

The point about not supporting the 5k monitors is that it's sad their top of the line PRO machine hasn't even been updated to be able to use their newest 5k monitors. Pro's are the ones who need 5k monitors first, not your mom & pop consumer with their new 'not that pro' Macbook Pro.

Nice going missing the 2016 holiday shopping season. The courage is strong with this company.

There is no difference between the rMBP 15" Late 2013 and the Mid 2014 other than the price and CPU is a little faster. Why can't it also run the LG 5K monitor

Actually Apple used LG LCD panels for their 27" Thunderbolt displays and iMacs (same as competing Dell displays at the time):

However, I prefer Apple's chassis designs over this PC-esque monstrosity.

Yes. The Mac Pro has six TB2 ports. Using a monitor like this: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/hp-z27q-27-inch-5k-professional-monitor,4404.html you can have three 5k displays. Of course, you'd be giving up every single Thunderbolt port in the process.

Apple deserves some complaints but this is silly. Your Mac Pro only supported 2560x1600 when it was new, and you apparently upgraded it to a 980 Ti to gain 4K support so what is keeping you from upgrading in the future? Once more stuff supports DisplayPort 1.3 it should be possible.

Intel is in a sweet position here-- by being the man behind the man, they've been let completely off the hook...

What does that have to do with the Mac Pro? It uses dedicated graphics cards. Let's say you're right and they simply don't have updated processors. Fine. Why let the graphics stagnate? We are talking about graphics that are going on 4 years old with no change.
