Has there been any update on when the LG5K display will be available to order?
Nope... and over half the month gone already, too. At this stage, it wouldn't surprise me if it was only available for a week, at the apparent lower price!

Conspiracy theory:

Wait until just after Christmas and everybody is completely spent out and then put it on sale for a few days.

(Not being entirely serious about that I should point out!)

I'm beginning to actually doubt there will be any (more) to purchase before the offer runs out.

Can imagine the moans if it suddenly becomes available en-masse in the first week of January!

Here's another perspective: the UltraFine 5K is a totally unique product and yet with the discount is also the cheapest 5K display I have seen.

It is possible that Apple or LG just wants them to be on sale at the discounted price for as short a time as possible because they're not making enough money on them.

In which case they may come on sale a few days before the end of the year and have relatively plentiful availability.

I purchased the 4K yesterday and collected it in store.

In all honest 21.5 inches is too small. But it is a very nice display and does the job for up close usage but I wouldn't want to lie in bed and watch it.

My plan is to exchange it when the 5K is available. (Or sell it if its outside the returns period).

Does anyone know can I close the MacBook Pro and still use the monitor? Or put the MBP display to sleep and use the monitor?

Yep, it's called clamshell mode. Your Mac can't sleep while using the display though. In the same way I'm not very good at doing crosswords while I'm asleep, your Mac isn't great at doing Mac things while it's sleeping! ;)

can you sleep the mbp with an external monitor connected in clamshell mode when you shut the external monitor off ?

Thanks. So basically the external keyboard and mouse keep it awake. But I can't still sleep the MacBook display and still use its keyboard... I'd have to turn the display brightness down so I can't see it to do that which seems like a stupid hack method.

Ah, I see what you mean. It used to be possible to put a magnet near the palm rest to trick it into thinking the display was closed but that doesn't work anymore.

In that case, most people use a two-screen set-up. Even if you don't need both screens, I always find it handy to have iTunes/iMessage/Twitter or something on the second screen. Which is exactly what I'm doing now in fact! :)

With most monitors, there is no connection between turning off the monitor and causing the Mac to sleep.

However with displays like the UltraFine, the reverse happens (creating the same result): sleep your Mac, and the display turns off.

I would only use the mbp in clamshell .. so I would have to open then sleep it and then close it again?

So I just had a disturbing conversation with a person from Apple customer support. She has been trying to help me find out more information about when the 5K displays will be available again at the discounted price. She said she was told by a more senior person that the reason they were only available to order for a couple of hours on November 28th was because LG had only released a certain number of the displays to Apple at that time. They sold all of them quickly and it is now up to LG if they want to release any more at the discounted price and thus far they haven't chosen to do so. Apparently there are units available in LG inventory. The Apple person said it is very possible there won't be any additional releases at the $974 pricing and it will expire at year end. Then there will be units available but at the full price only. Hopefully not true but does sound plausible. If that is the case, I don't understand why Apple is continuing to leave it up on the site at the discounted price with the statement "Available December"??? Doesn't seem to be very customer oriented!!

I bought a pair of the 27" Dell 4K displays and they are spectacular with my new tMBP.

The LG monitor is not worth it. Does it even rotate for portrait photo and text work? Can it connect via other sources? Why is it so ugly at a premium price?

It's a nice monitor, but if you wait a minute you'll have better and cheaper alternatives than will exceed the LG and likely for less money. I've heard that Samsung has something serious planned for the 5K market coming soon. Much rather have that.

That will never happen. We will get them at discounted rates once they decide to do a full release. There will be plenty of time for peeps to buy now until Jan. 1st.

LG just put the Ultrafine 5K Display on their website as it appears they're getting ready to sell direct but for the full retail price of $1300. So what you heard makes sense... LG's holding back delivery of product to Apple so Apple can't undercut their prices. What a pain.

Well that's really depressing!! I was hoping my information wasn't correct. Doesn't make sense they would let Apple sell at a 25% discount unless Apple is reimbursing them which I doubt. Given that is the case, I still don't understand why Apple hasn't removed the "December" availability statement from their site and taken it down???
[doublepost=1482040832][/doublepost]So I followed the link from sbrown02 and went to the "contact us" for LG and wrote the following:

Subject: 27MD5K Availability on Apple Site12/18/2016 14:56:44
So I don't understand why this monitor has not yet been released onto the Apple site. Apple indicates "Currently Unavailable" and that it will be available "December". December is past halfway gone and still not available on Apple site?? What is the true situation? Will it be available on the Apple site at the discounted price of $974 or not? Story I was told by Apple Sales/Customer Service Rep indicated Apple is waiting for LG to make inventory available. When will this happen? Apple discount only good until 12/31 and now people are saying LG is holding back inventory so Apple can't sell at the discounted price. I'd like to get the truth from somebody who really knows. Please advise at your earliest convenience as I'd very much like to purchase one or two of these displays. I've already ordered my new MacBook Pro laptop fully loaded and the only reason I ordered it was so I could use this monitor for my photography edits.

The LG site said I would receive an answer within 24 hours so hopefully I will get something useful by this time tomorrow.

I suspect Apple will not honour the discount beyond the end of December. The 5k will return to full price and people who didn't know will continue to hand their money to Apple. As usual, there'll be forum rage, but really, we only count for 0.01% of Apple sales.

That said, I would be very happy for Apple to prove me wrong.

Apple developed these screens with LG, and I don't think Apple is going to tolerate LG screwing Apple customers over. If you are familiar with Apples practices with managing supply chain relationships, then you know that Apple would crush these guys like a beer can for risking them bad press.

It wouldn't take much for Apple to announce that they are extending the offer until mid-late January. If I'm wrong on all this, then apple would certainly deserve the forum rage, but they are pretty sensitive about PR and the MBP has already received its fair share of negative commentary. I don't think Apple will allow LG to hand the media a live hand grenade but that's just my two cents.

I don't think that's how it works. For example, so the retail price is $1300, thus say the distributor price is $455 (usually ~35% of full retail – to allow future discounting in stores). So at $974, Apple still have a margin of $519 (before costs).
LG retailing directly make the full 65% markup instead when selling themselves. But they aren't doing so on their site, so I think it's unlikely at this time.

To be honest, manufacturers nearly always advertise items at FULL price on their own websites compared with third-party retailers online, so nothing to alarmed about IMO.

I blame Angela Ahrendts. She's awful.

What? Why?

I don't think that'll be the case. For all of its faults, Apple is a stand-up, ethical company.

As Apple's retail boss, there have been quite a few debacles under her watch. The two hour availability window for this monitor being only a small one out of all of them. The lack of any kind of transparency or communication about product availability is another.
