I LMFAO when I saw them labelled as 'Tech Experts'.
Haha - I'm amazed they didn't notice the conflict of "Tech Expert" and "UrAverageConsumer"!

In other UltraFine bug/issue news, Marques claims that the display doesn't actually provide a full 85W as promised and the battery drained while he was encoding video. Apparently his MacBook nearly shut down before finishing the processing. Plugging in the Apple power adapter apparently stopped the drain.

Where does he say that @Brookzy ?

I do enjoy watching their videos but would just call them youtubers or tech youtubers/vloggers.

It drained all the way to 8% while rendering video, so he had to switch to the Apple power brick!

(And this from someone paid to sing the product's praises!)

Hmmm.. why would running out of battery "kill the MacBook"? :/

Maybe he has a faulty 5KLG? Mine seems to charge pretty fast.
Considering the average age of his viewer is probably about 13, I think he was just being playfully puerile with the killing the MacBook thing!

I would have thought it extremely unlikely that he has a faulty unit. As one of only four reviewers who had early access, I have no doubt his was cherry picked and double checked before being given to him.

If you find yourself at a loose end for 20 minutes and fancy investigating it, you could run your MacBook to a state of medium-low charge (anything under 70%) and increase the power consumption to the absolute maximum by simultaneously thrashing it with:
  • four instances of the yes command in Terminal
  • GpuTest's stress test
  • brightness on maximum
And use coconutBattery to compare the "charging with" figure under the LG 5K charger, and the Apple charger, to see if the Apple charger shows a higher charging current (or, if Marques is to be believed, a lower discharge current).

Hey guys, one question - I have the 4K LG Display and some issues with the speakers: So at loud music (especially at loud treble) the plastic on the left backside begins to vibrate and makes a very disturbing rattling noise, is this normal? Someone else has the same? Or do you think its an hardware problem?

So there we go it was an EMI shielding issue. So I am not going to say all the issues are EMI but with that in the mix it is going to be hard to break down what was EMI and what is software.

Call apple / LG to setup your return for repair as part of the retrofit program that is being rolled out.

Gosh what a terrible situation. If I had a 5K I would be asking for a replacement. Spending £900 on a display to then have it taken away for who knows how many weeks - no thanks!

Hopefully Apple steps in and provides some sort of extended return window or something.

Since the brightness issue was related to macOS and not the firmware, I guess it's safe to assume that for example the inaccurate volume steps are also macOS related? I'm not really sure what the firmware does in the display, anyone more knowledgable in this matter?

I know it is rough.

Should I go looking for problems?
My router is 4 ft. away
I have the LG 5K hooked up to a nMP - zero problems
The only thing not working is the ambient light sensor.
Even if they send an updated display the new one might have light bleed or other flaws.

Mine is 3 mt from a router and I have no problems. I'll keep it. Don't want to replace it again not knowing if the next one will be issues free

Thanks. I was hopeful that my issue had something to do with the lack of shielding since I keep my external drive behind the display, but that seems less likely if yours is literally attached to the back. Either way, I'll wait till my next Skype call to see if moving the drive resolves the issue.

Following up...

I moved the drive farther from the display, but continue to have the issue with the camera and ports dropping when on video calls. Not surprising as I can't imagine that the drive was causing any interference.

On at least three occasions, I've also had my MBP freeze when waking from sleep. The MBP and 5k displays come on, but the built-in keyboard and touchbar are unresponsive as is the external keyboard. The only thing that I can do is to force reboot.

At least twice, I've come in in the morning to find that my MBP had rebooted in the middle of the night due what is noted as a sleep/wake issue. According to the timestamp, this happens several hours after the MBP should have gone to sleep and when nobody was around to wake it from sleep.

I think I solved the problem setting the resolution of the MacBook Pro to "default".
Will continue to test. Are you using a resolution that is not the "default" one?

I'm on 3200x1800 - but for the time being, I've just been opening the MBP, letting its screen turn on, and then disconnecting the cable. No issues now... an extra step, but it works 100% of the time.

The first three digits of the serial number.

7 = 2017
02 = February

So you're looking for 702 onwards.

Do we know that every display manufactured after February 1 has the updated shielding? The quote ("... so all LG UltraFine 27-inch 5K displays manufactured after February 2017 will be fitted with enhanced shielding.") in the recode article is ambiguous.

I called LG and they said that I would have to ship my monitor back to them and that they would update the shielding. Apple is willing to do an exchange, but I doubt that the ones that they have in stock have the updated shielding, even assuming that Feb 1st was the first day LG updated their assembly.

Fortunately today is the last day in my return period. I've flagged it with Apple for return. I'll drop it off next week with Apple and re-order once new Feb stock is available. This is nonsense. I feel bad for anyone beyond their return period. Apple should take all the faulty displays back in exchange for new ones and stick LG with the expense.

Yeah, they state after February, not after 1th of February, so that is a mess too.
