That's true but I'm not sure if it actually makes a difference! I'm also planning to try a Belkin cable before returning the display. Since the 0.5 m cable is not readily available from the Austrian Apple store and the 2 m is quite expensive, I'm thinking about buying a Belkin 1 m cable from Amazon. However, the 1 m cable is only 20 Gbit/s (instead of 40 Gbit/s). Does this make a difference if only running 1 display? Which one are you using?

Thank you very much for your help!

20g is not enough to run the monitor.

Mission control via hot corner - jerky animation

Can someone please verify this? Turn on hot corners in system prefs and assign the top left to Mission Control. Put a few apps into 'fullscreen mode' and then go to one of them and go to the top eft (mission control) hot corner. Do you get smooth or jerky animation?

I don't think this is restricted to this monitor and is more of an OS X issue, it started happening a few releases ago. But still curious to know whether it happens for anyone else. Thanks.

There is a Sierra update on the App Store all, and it seems to have improved the above greatly - still not smooth like it should be but definitely better. (I posted a bug report about this btw - so it seems they do listen!)

Did it change any behaviour regarding change brightness or volume, or automatic brightness, with the 5K display?

Brightness, yes I think it has more on an immediate effect. Volume, no - it's still a big jump from 1 to 2.

I haven't tried putting it to sleep > disconnecting > waking > sleeping > reconnecting... yet!

I haven't tried putting it to sleep > disconnecting > waking > sleeping > reconnecting... yet!

I've just done a very quick test of the above and... *touch wood* no crash! However, usually the disconnected state is much longer, so I'll report back on this tomorrow.

Also, another bug I posted seem to have been fixed as well so I feel MUCH better about this Mac now... here's hoping it continues!

What is the other bug you posted that seems to have been fixed?

My replacement arrived today. Will run the new MAC OS update then hook it up and give it another full run through, hopefully most if not all of the issues are gone. Will also try moving the closed laptop off the metal base of the stand which is where I had it before I sent back the first monitor, after reading the posts above about this "solution" will try if the problems persist.

Hello,

Just want to comment about all this negative comments about the "ugly design". I received this display today, it looks really fine, very good building quality, and the image is superb, incredible.

I even like more the black color, because it helps to focus better on this amazing screen, it can't be better. I am very, very happy with this purchase. Sometimes I wonder if all this negative comments come from professional (paid users) from other companies like Samsung, Microsoft…

Best regards

I thought I read somewhere the total bandwidth requirement of the 5k was ~28Gbit ?
You did!
The UltraFine 5K uses:

5120 × 2880 × 60 Hz × 10 bits × 3 colours = 26.5 Gbps
@fischer.vienna your display is likely running at 4K, even if macOS is reporting 5K. The same happened to another user who managed to get macOS to claim 5K was being pushed over a TB3-TB2 adapter which isn't possible.

5K displays definitely need more than 20 Gbps otherwise 5K displays would have been released two years ago alongside Thunderbolt 2.

Thanks for the hint btw!

The other bug was dragging a folder of files (or sometimes even a file) from the downloads folder via the dock would crash the system. I tried it twice earlier and it's been ok (only just got back in from the gym).

Give the update a go - there is a definite improvement. Keep us posted :)

Good to hear - I also had that bug #KillallDock :D

I saw one in store and it is stunning. I love the design as well. Super clean and minimalist and the screen just pops out from the black case. I hate most of the modern displays that are trying to look cool with weird stands etc

After today's macOS Sierra 10.12.3 update I have tried several connects and disconnects with the LG UltraFine 5K display (using the original LG TB3 USB-C cable) when my MBP 13 have been running with open lid or sleeping or shut-down with closed lid. I was positively impressed because in all these cases the display started and the USB devices (Logitech MX2 mouse and Belkin USB-C Ethernet adapter) were recognized. The same applies with my Apple Bluetooth keyboard which has automatically connected with the MPB in all these cases as well. Now I hope that this status will remain over time and is not only a temporary solutions which deteriorates over time. I will keep you updated.

Did you have problems with your bluetooth keyboard previously? My BT keyboard and trackpad (both version 1 not the newer v2s) have been connecting fine.

Either way I am glad things have improved for you :D I hope they continue to iron things out - it's really not fair to make customers be what is essentially alpha or beta testers.

My UltraFine 5K stopped working completely yesterday. The USB ports still charge devices so power is going to the display, but no power or data travelling over the Thunderbolt 3 cable. I've tried two TB3 Macs and 2 cables and it is dead. I've requested a replacement from Apple, I hope the wait for a newy isn't too long. No flickering or major sleep/wake issues with my unit over the past month. It sounds like this update begins to fix some of the small bugs, which is great. But it won't make these more significant quality control issues go away.

Ok all, I ran the OS update, connected the new replacement, and so far, all issues seem to be eliminated except for the slow speed in Lightroom, it's still slow, in fact I find it even slower now which is very disappointing.

But from quick testing, I can report the following:
  • Apple Watch unlocking works without issue
  • Time machine external drives plugged into monitor have not ejected erroneously, both while working and waking up from sleep.
  • The screen has not gone black nor log me out
  • The large mouse cursor hasn't gotten stuck
  • And, all this while the MBP is actually closed, sitting directly on the metal base of the LG display. (If problems arise my first step will be to remove from resting on the metal base)
* Note I am using the Belkin 2M TB3 cable I got last week, I did not attempt the LG cable.

I will report back in the morning. A lot o the issues I had before were not present at first either, they slowly started to pop up over a couple of days of use, so let's see. As a first start, looking good. Now just need to deal with the crappy Lightroom speed.

Interesting, after updating, I am still getting the sticky large mouse pointer.

"faulty Thunderbolt 3 cable - the MBP screen kept blinking in and out as if changing resolution and video on the LG 5k attached to the other end of the cable wouldn't work at all, even though the MBP was being charged by the TB3 cable"

Same here. it does work for me however when i plug my computer power supply into a different port; apparently the fault in the TB3 cable is something in the pass thru...

"This seems like a sledgehammer to crack a nut, but I presume replacement parts will become more readily available when supply is less constrained?"

Totally agree, what a hassle; i'm tempted to just roll with the 60w supply; works fine when i'm plugged into the 4k just obviously slower charge...

As I said in my original post, macOS is reporting that resolution but the real image is not 5K. It does the same thing when using a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter. The interface is being rendered at the size it would be for a display that resolution, but is being displayed as a 4K image. It is simply not possible to push a 5K resolution over 20 Gbps cables, as the maths shows.

Unfortunately I spoke too soon. Last night after letting the computer sleep while I was taking a bath, I unplugged it, opened it up and I got the black screen of death! Had to hard reboot :(

That is highly unlikely. This is a huge departure from the original TBD industrial design. At the end of the day, LG is not Apple. I am fine with the design, but it IS plastic vs aluminum. When I use it, the only thing I see is the beautiful screen and I have it on an arm so I don't even see the stand, but most critics are people who haven't seen it in person, just online and it does look like something out of early 2000s.

Since I have the original cable as well I will give it a shot later.
not sure what you're not understanding, its basic physics regardless of what the OS is telling you.
