Interestingly the LG 5K Display works nice for me (Currently attached to a Mac mini M1 but also works well on my MacBook Pro) - just design-wise and considering the build-quality it is not playing in Apples League
I have had 3. They were all great. My wife is still using the last one (almost 8 years old now!). LG’s out of warranty repairs were even super reasonable and very fast. (Mainboard replacement with shipping was around $150 with a sub 2 week turnaround.)

I wish the speakers weren’t so awful. I like the Studio Display better in almost every way except the terrible stand.

The problem with no bezels is that
Can any other company come up with cool designs except steal them from Apple. I’m surprised they didn’t do the cheese grater holes in the back. Who knows? Maybe they did. Lol
East Asian societies in general, and companies in particular, have a long tradition of copying Western ideas and styles.

I'm definitely buying one of these when it goes on a Black Friday or Cyber Monday sale, as long as it works with Thunderbolt 4. My M3 Max MBP should be able to run it without issues, at least at 60Hz. I'm honestly fine with 60Hz for a desktop that isn't being used for gaming. It's more about productivity and while 120Hz is nice it's not necessary for what I use my Mac for. If I want to game, I use my 77" LG C3 4K 120Hz OLED.

I can't believe LG actually made a display that has a design that looks cleaner than Apple's design. I love that it doesn't have a big webcam on it taking up bezel space either. I don't need those kind of gimmicks. When I occasionally use the webcam, I just turn to the MacBook Pro that it's plugged into. It's just for work so who gives a crap?

The biggest news here, IMO, is that we have a major display fab ramping up 6K 32" panels now. This means we should get more 6K panels into the world in the coming years, as it will become more common and other companies will shift from primary 1440p and 4K display production to 4K and 6K display production. Especially with the new NVIDIA 5 series cards announced, which, given a bit of time, will help make 1440p displays that are primarily used in gaming more obsolete.

IMO 6K 32" is the perfect size/resolution for desktop productivity. 5K 27" is a close second. Anything larger than 32" isn't great for doing work at a desk (due to neck strain from looking up and down), unless it's in a wider aspect ratio for more window productivity. For instance, 8K in 2.37 would be 8192 x 3456. This keeps the same vertical resolution as 6K (6144 x 3456), meaning if you kept the same physical height as 32" 16:9 diagonal, that would be 15.7" high, but instead of 28" wide, it would be about 37.2", giving a diagonal of about 40.4". Of course wider is better, especially if it's curved in a controlled light environment, but I don't think we're at a point now where panels wider than 8K are feasible from a technological standpoint. So my current perfect display is a 40" 8K 21.33:9 120Hz display, probably with mini-LED as I'm unsure if OLED is quite ideal yet for desktop use and burn-in.

Apple doesn't include a camera on the Pro Display XDR. No speakers either.

The only issue with small bezels is that the clip from an attached camera on top covers part of the screen. That said, it's not a big deal, since that's where the menu bar resides, and on a big screen like that, usually there isn't anything there in the menu bar in that location.

We kind of knew this was coming, as Asus announced their 32" 6K last year. Asus does not make display panels, so it had to be coming from a manufacturer like LG.

However, I still don't see this as a very high volume product, because it's unnecessary on the Windows side. Windows handles lower pixel densities better than macOS, since Windows still supports sub-pixel anti-aliasing.

IMO 6K 32" is the perfect size/resolution for desktop productivity. 5K 27" is a close second.
My favourite size is about 30" and favoured pixel density would be about 200 ppi, so for a 30" display, that would be about 5K. I don't like 27" as much, as I find it a bit too narrow for dual side-by-side windows. (I own two 27" iMacs, one 2.5K and one 5K.) I'll take a 32" 6K though. :)

If it is a glossy glass display it’s totally worth it. Any matte glass screen or worse, plastic, screen makes it a shame.

I know there are two camps with some preferring matte and some preferring glossy, but at 218 dpi, matte displays really just make the fonts not as sharp.

I haven’t seen Apple’s nano textured display. I bought the Studio Display solely for the glossy glass screen and DPI because there isn’t any in the market. I wish Apple thinned the bezels a lot more though.

LG should really introduce this with a bang and not announce it with scant details. If it’s thinner, cheaper, full glass and metal design with the stand thrown in, what’s there not to like? It’ll sell like hotcakes! Except no miniLED though.

In Feb 2024, that $150 repair rate was adjusted to a hard to swallow $350.

From the photo, I'm not too confident with this tiny stand. Would love to see a VESA mount adapter on the back and some bezels around.
This isn't an Apple monitor. Like pretty much every non-Apple monitor on the market today, there is already the option to VESA mount it included in the box. No need to buy an adapter or select any specific option at check-out - just buy a VESA mount and use it.

Oh my bet - Was so happy with the news that I didn't read it right - Thought the $2,479.99 is the price for the LG. But I think the price should be similar? At least way cheaper than the Apple 6K display

I wouldn't bet on it being "way cheaper". LG's looks to be a rather high-end design with aluminum casing and no bezel.. unlike Dell's atrocious plastic design, with massive uneven bezels.

I'd guess this will be priced at $4,995, with eventual discounts bringing it just under $4K.

It's a bezel less screen in aluminum casing. I couldn't care less if they "steal" it from Apple - in fact, the closer they bring it to Apple's design quality, the more likely I will buy it.

That’s what they’re banking on. Closer they can get to Apple, for cheaper, people will buy it. Bit if it’s $5k, what’s the point. If it’s $3k, it will attract those 'wanting' to look like Professionals, but kind afford the real deal. Nothing wrong with that, but it’s the truth. Top of the market will still buy Apple, but this will,be aimed at next their down. IF it’s $3-4k

Good - I want a DISPLAY not all that junk thrown in. 38" is way too big for a desktop monitor. 27-32 is the sweet spot. There's a reason Apple went to 6k for 32", it keeps the PPI at their required minimum.
We run a test in the studio 5 years ago with all 27” imacs at standard resolution, nobody noticed it for the whole day, of course it looks way better at hidpi, but thats why MBP got “standard” hidpi at smaller ppi since 2016 (downscaled 3x vs 2x) moving from the assumed retina ppi

Hidpi 5k supports 32” pretty well with the MBP 3x method even better as the desktop screen is even further from your eyes.

I bet just few people in few specific cases can tell the difference even side by side of 32” 5k vs 6k

Welcome to the world where the computer is a commodity and the display monitor is the investment.
Hah! But then again, a good display might be kept through 2 or even 3 computers. At least with home users; I wonder if that's the case with the demographic likely to buy most of these? I'm guessing that's mainly some niche corporate professional users?

Obviously won't give as good an image as the XDR if it doesn't have miniLED backlighting

The xdr is not mini led

In fact this is likely either the exact same LG manufactured ips panel as the xdr or an improved one

I agree, although it's also possible it is the Dell one which has a slightly different resolution, since LG apparently also makes the Dell 6K screen. That one is 6144x3456, and it's an IPS Black screen, with a single-zone backlight.

I’d never buy another LG monitor after my experience with the UltraFine. Those things were awful. I went through three of them in three years. No excuse for that at all.

N my view, for photo and video rditing…the choice is between Apple and Eizo. Eizo is most probably better
