Life sucks (scratches on the keyboard)

Maybe I was a little melodramatic and it doesn't bother me that much, I am just annoyed that Apple isn't willing to admit that the scratch was the fault of them or a courier
See here’s my take on it, if I got that as a gift, if it was sealed I make you dead right take it back and create Merry hell over it, and so the person that gifted it to me would also expect me to, I wouldn’t accept it either.
If it was given as a gift to me, used, I wouldn’t even give it a second thought, move on.

What difference does it make if his mum bought it for him, or anyone for that matter?
I’m sure whomever bought it for him would approve of him trying to get this resolved in the same way you would if you bought this new Apple laptop for yourself.
What makes it ok that the product isn’t perfect?
It’s not the actual unit that matters from a grateful or sentimental point of view from his mum, he will love it more if it gets changed for a cosmetically better unit.

1. You probably can go to Apple store and try exchange for a new one.
2. Lesson learned. DO NOT give your child a MacBook Pro for nothing. Have him/her working on minimum wage job for hundreds of hours to earn the MacBook Pro.

Wtf does it matter whether he paid for it or a family member did ???
If it’s flawed we would ALL want it sorted out, deny it if you will.

For me, I would never have posted this. I would have just tried to get it exchange for another one and not go through all this on the MacRumor forum. It’s really not that big of a deal to do it yourself without whining on a forum to strangers.

I agree the post title, and tone of the post came across as entitled, whiny. That shouldn’t detract from the entitlement to get it sorted out by Apple.

i bet anyone here whining about whining would cry if their apple watch had a similar scratch and immediately queueing to replace it, and the apple watch is even multiple times cheaper than the mbp 15”. why would the scratch on mbr would be acceptable if it is bothering the buyer/owner?

i really cant say how much that scratch would bother in a real life because photos are always photos - it may be almost invisible and only visible in certain situations or it could be a shiny mark that always reminds you being there.

It’s only noticeable with a lantern and in a dark room, but it’s there. You guys are crazy, it was a gift from my mum, she bought it in an apple reseller store and the MacBook Pro was new, it wasn’t used it was all new with a cosmetic issue that’s all, but the store and apple aren’t helping me to exchange it for a new one, cmon it doesn’t even have 24 hours.

She has the receipt right? Return it. Easy.

jesus christ. you do realize that even from 1-2 days of use just typing on the keyboard, you will probably have tiny scratches from finger nails anyway, even if you exchange for a new one, you will have scratches in a few days. plus "
it’s only noticeable with a lantern and in a dark room, but it’s there" is just hilarious tbh

I don’t find hilarious when someone complains for an Apple Watch with a scratch, thy denied me the exchange and it’s unfair, I have a lot of apple products and I like my stuff in good condition, now the MacBook Pro not only has the scratches but the fingers oil from the people checking my laptop for nothing. It’s annoying for me

Now it has not only a microscopic scratch but also finger oil?!?!

Oh the humanity....

Welp. It's all downhill now. Finger oils

It’s not noticeable with light:

Well, live with it.

While I sympathize with you about the whole cosmetic issue... you gotta realize that in the grand scheme of things, it's a computer, and the functionality should matter more so than the cosmetics. You said it yourself that you wouldn't notice it under certain lights anyway.

Finger oils and such can be cleaned up pretty easily. Use alcohol wipes for camera lenses if you don't know what you are doing. Those don't scratch even the most sensitive camera lens elements, so you'll be fine with plastic and aluminum.

Buy AppleCare+. It's basically "insurance" for the computer, and you have the option of just smashing the screen if you end up wanting a perfect machine some years later.

Last but not least (apologies before hand if this is not true), you sound like quite a young lad. Just use the computer to study hard, get good grades, earn a degree, then go find a job. Once you start working, the cost of a new MacBook Pro is quite... inconsequential. Buy directly from Apple, and if you open the box and find... whatever, just return it. Current policy is 14 days from purchase or receipt of computer, whichever it is.

Yes I wish they sort this out and be happy.
I learned a lesson. It is not a lesson for you, and that is OK. Be calm.

if it was just bought and you can return it then do it if you want. Just dont tell the next apple store that it has scratches because they wont notice. Just get your money back and order a new one.
Thats if it really bothers you that much.

You can return it within 14 days no questions asked. There have been people on this forum that have returned their Macbook's for no reason other than rumours of a refresh.

on that situation, easiest way it is just to forget it... it doesnt look bad at all and it seems to be that it is not visible in a normal situation. it will get more visible scratches when it has been with you for weeks/monts. even when you are extra careful, something will always hit the machine and it gets dents. a watch on your wrist, a wall/doorpost, you drop it on the floor while laying on the bed/sofa etc...

but if it is still bothering, call apple customer care and ask them is there anything you can do. if not, just forget it and enjoy.

The scratch may have been there before, but I wonder if the finger oil is actually from OP.
Although saying that, it sounds like they may live in a clean room away from any hard/dangerous items.

You're going to hate this laptop in a year if you ever travel with it anywhere. The first scratch, knock, mark.
Definitely move to a notepad and pen.

One thing about being old - your vision declines so you see fewer of the little imperfections of life.

I bought a 2015 15 inch MBP in January. It has a dent in one corner and a gouge on one side. I use the dent to determine whether it's my 2014 or 2015. It works perfectly fine.

If you have the unboxing on video and can demonstrate that it was damaged, then you might have a case. Do you know where your mother bought it from? It is not that hard to apply shrink-wrap to an object. I used to do charity work in making fruit baskets and we assembled the basket, fruit, cookies, etc. and then shrink-wrapped it with the plastic sleeve and a heat gun.

I wouldn't be surprised if the OP's mom does this, then he opens the box of the "replacement" and finds... the same thing again!

It was bought from an official Apple reseller, the store is listed on the apple website as official reseller. It’s not a random shop, the laptop has not being used before, I’m getting tired of this conspiracy theory about an used laptop, it’s a cosmetic issue from the fabric, ya Apple is not Philiipe Patek, sometimes products come out of the fabric with small issues, mine it’s one
