i just picked up the taupe- i think its the 800k product cycle? so far im impressed with the response of the screen and overall functionality. i have to admit i didnt expect much after breezing through this thread.

my one complaint is the headphone jack. i really wish they made that similar to the charger jack- i have a jawbone UP and this going to be a huge pain in the behind.

I registered to come here and hopefully answer for someone the questions I had about this case before I bought it(and for those keeping track, serial number 59****, all black):

Q: Does the screen protector portion of the case bubble up at all?
A: No. There is no bubbling. There are no air pockets. There is no feeling the protector moving beneath my fingers. There is no sound of air escaping beneath my fingers. Maybe you can tell that the protector moves if you push on it REALLY hard with your fingers - but then again, of course it would in that case. For normal use, you don't really notice it's there at all.

Q: Are certain parts of the screen less responsive than others with the case on?
A: No. I have noticed absolutely zero dead spots in terms of sensitivity. Everywhere seems very responsive. Everywhere is as responsive as the phone is out of the case. No areas need to be hit more than once to get a response.

Q: Are there newton rings on the screen protector?

A: Yes. Let me tell you when I see them - when my phone is not in use sitting on my desk. When the phone is in my hand with the case on do I notice them? Nope. Unless you are care about how the screen protector looks when you're not using the phone I see this as an absolute none issue.

Q: Can people hear me when I talk on the phone?
A: Yes. Everyone says loud and clear. They don't sound muffled. Quite a relief, actually. 40 min phone call this evening, everything sounded great.

Q: Does the case distort music from the phone?
A: No. When do people use their phone to listen to music anyway? I tested this specifically for this post. Sounds fine. But really, why do people care about this?

Q: Is there a weird buzzing while talking on the phone?
A: No. Everything sounds perfectly fine.

Q: what is the quality of speaker phone with the case on?
A: Don't know, didn't test. I'll update with that information later on.

Q: Does the case feel cheaply made?

A: No. Exactly what I expected actually. Were people expecting really heavy stainless steel? It actually feels very light and sturdy in my hand. Love it.

Q: Is the home button or other buttons hard to use/decreased sensitivity?

A: Everything works and responds just fine. Also a relief.

Q: Is everything water tight?

A: Haven't tested. I'll do that later. Currently not a lot of water too motivate me to take the time to test that (going to school in AZ and spend all of my time in the library)

Q: Does it feel bulky?
A: No

Q: Does it fit well in a pocket?
A: Yes. I couldn't tell you what it's like wearing girl jeans, since I'm a dude and junk

Q: Do I work for lifeproof/am I a PR guy
A: No.

Bottom line: Great case. Expensive, but it's water proof. My reason for getting it - I wanted something to protect the phone, especially the screen, from anything. I wanted a case that would protect my phone so that I could just throw it into my bag without thinking twice while getting out in the mountains or traveling somewhere. Something to give me the confidence to leave it in my jacket pocket when on snow. Something to tuck into my trail running shorts and not worry about dirt and sweat and water.

Allegedly there are lots of knock offs you can buy online. I bought my in store from bestbuy. Just makes sure you buy from an authorized dealer so you know you are getting there real thing. I think a lot of peoples problems with the case either stem from them installing it wrong (it's very simple, really - but some people have had all their problems disappear on reinstall), they bought a knock off, they care about stupid things that don't matter at all (netwon rings? Seriously, find something worthwhile to care about in life)

TL;dr: Perfectly functional case for the person who is planning to bump up their phone and doesn't want to worry about it getting damaged.

Ask me whatever you want to know about the case and I'll test it for you. I'll check back in a couple of weeks.

LifeProof Fr iP5 case

I went back to this case again after briefly trying the Casemate Tough Xtreme. The Casemate is excellent until you try to use the holster and realize it makes the case almost unusable.

I have to use a holster with my line of work just for convenience among many other reasons. I have tried most iPhone 5 holster cases on the market with good reputations but have yet to find an ideal one. The Fre is almost perfect but despite having an 800,000 series case, I still find that calls are difficult to hear (especially in busy hallways or when announcements are being made). This is not a problem with some other cases like the Casemate or Otterbox Defender which are obviously not waterproof, but at least I can hear who I am talking to. I don't think I can continue using the Fre, but I have run out of alternatives as well.

Got one for my girlfriends birthday yesterday. She absolutely loves it other than the oil slicks that are appearing on the screen. I hear some people don't have this problem when they leave/put a screen protector on underneath the case. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks!

Make sure it is a glare/smudge resistant protector.

Saw this new color at bestbuy today and couldn't resist. Hopefully all the problems are magically fixed because I love this color!

screen works great, sound on the call is great for both parties, speaker phone works fine, music on speaker is good but not great..

keeping this one..thank god!

Bought one on the way home tonight. Already boxed up to be returned. Nasty oil slick and puffy screen in the corners plus dusty as heck inside the case in the package.

I would like the compactness of the Fre mated with the screen protector from a Defender or Armor case.

Lifeproof really needs to get their stuff together on the screen protectors so they can satisfy the anal retentive like myself. :)

FYI AT&T has an online discount on lifeproof for $56.00. Idk how long this is for but just figured I'd let everyone know.

just checked it out...looks like if you want the black one, you need to jump on it for $56.00..all other colors at reg price.

I just got a replacement front from lifeproof (great customer service BTW) and the replacement is great. There is no bubbles, no oil slicks on the screen. The sound is a little bit better too.

Humming sound lifeproof Solved

Yesterday i got my second lifeproof case for my iphone 5. The first case had the strange humming sound during calls. The company were i bought made no trouble by returning it and sending me a new case was not a problem. But with the first call i made the humming sound was still there.
Now i studied the case very well. made a diagram of the case and found that the case has problems with pressure in it. Because all of places were sound is produced they are sealed in by foam or rubber of some kind. taken this rubber of was not an option because then the case would loose ist warranty. Now i thought what if i put some thing between de case and the phone. After several attempts with sticky tape on different placese. proximity sensor, speaker, side buttons. I found out that by putting pressure on the back panel the humming gained volume during calls.
So i had tomake sure the the case had no contact with the back panel of my iphone. And voila. Problem solved
By placing a carton, in my case (case hahaha) the fake iphone carton from the package. cutting of the sides an also the square frame and the camera lens. Putting it on the back. The sound is perfect en every problem that came with the case (muffled phonecalls, humming sound, bad sound quality al of those things are histrory. That is in my case....
Goodluck

Interesting YouTube clip describing a fake iPhone LifeProof Fre case from Ebay vs a real one from the factory.

Mine, from Best Buy, looks like the real one. Whew! Plus I was able to register the serial number with LifeProof.

Very, very close. I actually wonder if the 'fake' one is just a earlier version of the LifeProof that is being dumped on eBay. That is a pretty typical pattern for eBay. Back in the day, when I purchased my first Motorola BT set, a good price was had on Amazon (yes, Amazon, NOT ebay), but it turned out to be an early model, that had a defect. The Chinese manufacturer or agent, dumped the remaining inventory at a discount onto eBay. Very, very often this happens.

Regardless, the earlier ones did have some problems, like the proximity sensor not working (that little dark filter on the 'real' one , fixes that), along with muffled sound, and the change in the back structure was probably the fix. So I'm thinking these are 'real' but defective and being dumped on eBay.

Anyhow, here is the video to watch. eBay or Amazon buyer beware!!!

How to tell a fake lifeproof 5 case vs the authentic lifeproof 5 case - YouTube

I finally returned mine. I tried really hard, REALLY hard to like this case. I've returned it and replaced it about 8 times and finally returned it for good. I also returned the belt clip because the swivel stopped working after a week and would spin freely. The belt clip fit my duty belt perfectly but it is no where near "LifeProof." Maybe Lifeproof will up their game and quality in the next generation, but for now a battery case will suffice.

I like the Fre. It's comfortable. Not an everyday case for me. Maybe nota construction site case. However for the beach here, it's perfect.

I'd call it a good construction lite case

The humming sound is easily cured by turning on the hearing aid setting in General-settings-accessibility. No ill effects and stops that problem 100%.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: there is no watertight case that will work as if it's not watertight. If you think you'll find one you need to look in the mirror and take a physics class. All waterproof cases are a trade-off. The Lifeproof meets my needs, being on the water several days a week and wanting something light.

Don't know if this has been asked before and most of you will think this is a stupid question based on the type of case but has anyone tried to remove the screen protector? I love the protection and look and feel of this case and wouldn't care about losing the waterproofing. Has anyone tried?

The serial numbers on the new colored ones are shorter numbers and are not in the hundred of thousands range. I know for a fact the neon green and red cases have no call problems. I got a green one and it was perfect in every way except for a wavy screen so I exchanged it and happened to find a red one at best buy a day later and got it. It is perfect in every way!

 No, but thought it was a good idea. Here we go..

I also cut out the membrane for the speakers and microphone on the bottom, enlarged the headphone jack, and drilled a tiny hole for the video/noise cancelling microphone on the rear. Phone has a matte screen protector.

It may no longer be 'lifeproof', tho it certainly is shockproof and 100% functional.
