It is time people realized that you don't have to be married to Apple life long. They push you to upgrade until one day you snap and just switch to a different company.

I won't jump to conclusions until I hear more about the adapter's capability...

But...

I often connect my iPhone to my 2005 Honda Pilot's aux video input (through a lovely $50 Apple composite cable) so that my kids can watch streaming Netflix videos on our long drives (on the built in video screen). I wonder if this will still be possible with an iPhone 5+adapter.

My guess is no. I am in the same situation with my Jeep. I hook it into the system with a proprietary cable that allows for video and use that for streaming netflix and hulu plus. But I guess we won't know for sure until it actually come out.

Using Bluetooth or the Audio input jack is not a practical alternative. It will render the steering wheel controls useless. It would also render the ability to navigate the iPod menu (Artists, Playlists, Genre, choose song, etc.) through the touch-screen GPS (if you have one) useless.

I really doubt this is the case, as a few other readers have pointed out, it would render all of those iPod speaker docks useless. I don't think doing something like that is part of Apple's strategy.

Everyone read this!

"iPod Out" is NOT the same thing as audio out. iPod Out is how some car stereos are able to create the iPod/iPhone user interface (UI) on the car's display. iPod Out is about CONTROLLING your iPod or iPhone when it is connected to car stereos. Meaning, controlling the iPod or iPhone from the car's controls (dash and steering wheel) and seeing what you are controlling when the iPod or iPhone is stored out of sight.

That said... Yes, losing the iPod Out feature (via the adapter) is, in my opinion, a MAJOR mistake on Apple's part! There is a lot of people that have cars that use the iPod Out capability and those people can't use an iPhone 5 until their car stereo manufacturer offers a new Lightning-compatible cable. (If they ever do.)

My 2010 Hyundai has this weird proprietary cable that takes the 30pin connector and outputs to both USB and 1/8 stereo at the same time, so I assume I'm pretty much screwed. :(

I'll probably switch to playing music off a flash drive or something instead of having to control the music app on the phone while driving.

Apple clearly showed an iPhone 5 hooked up to a car via an adaptor during the keynote. They are aware of this importance. But the Apple Store website says something totally different. Which is it Apple? You have 48 hours to clarify.

I don't care about the price of the connector!! I would pay $100 bucks a piece if I could continue to listen to tunes off my phone. I have 27 Iphones in my lawfirm, if this is true I may dump Apple and AT&T over this BS.

the reason the adapter is so large is because there are chip(s) inside of it that handle the conversion of the digital signals from the iPhone 5 into the analog "iPod out" signals that all the old accessories/car kits/etc use. So with the adapter, rest assured all of your old accessories will continue to function as normal

Not every car stereo takes advantage of iPod Out. My 2008 Infiniti has its OWN iPod user interface and, thus, does not need or use iPod Out.

Only car stereos that "borrow" the iPod or iPhone's UI are using iPod Out. Those are the car stereos that won't work with the Lightning to 30-pin adapters (according to Apple's description for the adapters).

This link just made me even more confused. So, is iPod Out an exact replica of your iPods user interface onto your dash? So, iPod Out is not one of the many proprietary user interfaces different car makers employ? Or is iPod Out the ability to just see artists, tracks, etc on your dash and be able to control the app through your steering wheel etc?

Looks like you got raped by your auto-maker's horrible decision.
My wife's hyundai even has aux in and Bluetooth.... My Mitsubishi from 2001 has aux in.

Any 2013 without Bluetooth is blasphemy!

Consider aftermarket head units?

My car doesn't have it (it has a mod that connected to my car radio and allows me to control my ipod through the car radio) and I'd prefer it go over cable anyways.

Why? because cable will power up my iphone while it's being used, not use up even more battery power! This is particularly important when using it on long trips with GPS which sux battery power.

And it's not so easy to go buying a hundred dollar or more car stereo just to support your new phone. It's not like it's a few dollars extra.

Some car stereos have their own proprietary user interface. Those cars don't use "iPod Out." My 2008 Infiniti EX35 is an example that doesn't use iPod Out and has its own proprietary interface.

Newer cars (2010+) are more likely to utilize iPod Out.

where the same stuff happens there. It's business. This is no surprise, and anyone thinking they'd stick with the same connector forever is not living in reality. It's long past due - it's been 9 years.

After reading the page that explains it, I doubt mine is using iPod out, but since you seem knowledgeable I'll ask you.

What are the chances a 2003 Toyota that has an aftermarket mod put in to let me control an ipod (not iphone though it works with my iphone despite my iphones protestations) through my factory car radio uses ipod out?

Ugh.

Alright. Trying to clear this up still.

Does iPod Out also include any interface that causes the Music app to display "Accessory Connected"? If so, what happens? Does my 2009 BMW 135i no longer recognize my phone, meaning I can no longer control song choice through my steering wheel?

Have an aux added

Places that do car audio installation can put in a aux input for about $100 (US) is your car doesn't have one. That was the price given to me by a dealer in my town. The input can be mounted for easy access. Doesn't help the steering wheel control folks, though.

As everyone knows Apple's website says their new "lighting" adapter will not support video or ipod out? So what is the point? Are all stereo's, cars, and speakers systems that use the Apple 30pin connector not going to work on the Iphone 5 even with the stupid $29 adapter?

This can't possibly be true can it? Otherwise the adapter does nothing but allow charging from an old cable.

Please say it ain't so!!!!! I have 2 bose systems with Ipod connectors and 3 cars all with ipod connectors, will I not be able to listen to music any in of my cars or on my $500 bose stereo's if I upgrade?

Please someone say it ain't so!!
Welcome back from under your rock ;) Apple decides to ruin all accessories so don't support them by buying the new iPhone, as simple as that. I know that with my iHome I can't use the new connector because the dock is at a slant.

and no car made in the last 5 years have a 3.5 mm aux in jack.

Incorrect. My 2010 car has, as does my wifes. Many new cars to have audio in simply for Music devices, and many also have a second Aux in designed for screens that may allow a 3.5mm or similar plug (Often via an adapter) to be used for audio.

Unfortunately, this may be my solution. I was so looking forward to preordering, but not being able to hook my iPhone up to my car is a deal breaker for me. How could have Apple been this dumb to overlook this? Bluetooth is not an option (poor quality) and no car made in the last 5 years have a 3.5 mm aux in jack.

Baloney. My company bought a bunch of brand new Dodge Chargers last year and they have an aux jack and a USB jack.
