I’ve started watching Linus less and less, it seems he’s went from having relatively good information to just spewing random nonsense with nicer set pieces over the years. I never really watched his phone reviews either. It’s funny how the bigger the channel gets, the less useful information you get out of it.

I haven't watched this particular video because quite honestly, I buy my phones for my needs and wants, nobody elses. I do agree though, I used to watch his shows quite regularly, but now they just seem to be full or pointless, unrealistic builds and reviews. As you say, the bigger a channel gets, the less useful they become. Not always, but most of the time. Shame really, but that's the nature of business. There is no way a large company, no matter how hard it tries, can match the personal touch of a small company. Same with channels that need to cater for larger and larger audiences.

This guy is super douchey and impossible to watch. That doesn't mean he doesn't have good points, but if you've watched his videos in the past, he has a seething hatred toward Apple. Nobody is pushing him to Android ... or Windows for that matter.

He's actually used an iphone as his daily phone up until the s8.

His preference on computers is typically not Apple due to the fact it's near impossible to upgrade the internals. He is a techie you know, so being able to access components probably means a lot to him. Also, he praises a lot of aspects of Apple devices and OS too.

I have ~30 years in the industry, consulted across a wide range of technical sectors, been published, sold companies, work in web, security, mobile, AR/VR/CV, ML, public, private sector, etc., so I guess I'm a little over the YT loud-review-of-the-day having any real impact on my personal perspective that's backed by what most of my peers would say is reasonable technical expertise 🙂
Is that actually you, Rick?

The 6s was his daily phone for a while. He praised the tech inside such as the faster controller and the thermal throttling capabilities as well. Believe he liked the Touch ID as well.

He's also praised aspects of macOS when trying it and typically praises the speakers on Apple hardware.

He bashes Apple frequently. I don't care if he praises something once in a blue moon.

Ok he is a tech focused youtuber. Honestly any respectable tech focused enthusiast would find faults with Apple or any other company and its products. He has criticisms for basically everything he reviews. Just like there's things he praises for just about every product he reviews, apple included.

If you've followed him for years you'd already know these things.

X users. Thoughts on this? I know iOS (and most software) is far from perfect, but find it baffling how clumsy some of the gestures appear to be. It's the reason I always avoid first gen. Would like another perspective on this (from the community).

The UI is still a mess. People can get used to it sure, but trying to understand the thought process it's apparent it wasn't well conceived. Access to CC/notifications is honestly not intuitive at all.

The phrase “tech geek” now appears to have been redefined to mean “installed a launcher and made Tasker do something to minimize the deficiencies of the phone I bought”.

Dbl-clicking an icon [to run a downloaded app] to root a phone makes you an ultimate _h4x0R_ 😀

Agreed. I suppose in his defense, he's just trying to make a buck - that said, my point about not caring (i.e., not putting much stock in his opinion / who is this): at this point, owners (some of us just exceeded 2-weeks of actual use), and even non-owners have a pretty well developed understanding of the device, how the new tech works, limits, issues, most of the particulars of iOS 11.x (in the context of an X). Any "reviews" at this point are mixed blather of pointing out the obvious combined with subjective over-the-top rants meant to generate traffic. If someone really had some new insight, like some unique [objective] engineering perspective, that might be interesting. Also, it's an important distinction - one that was apparently lost on some responders - I wasn't critical of his criticality, just the delivery and pointlessness of it all 🙂

Is that actually you, Rick?

I've got the drinking, swearing and cranky attitude down pretty well ... spinning my tires on the portal gun.

Just a little negativity towards the X and the some buyers get all negative towards the reviewer.

Hardware - 9/10
Software - 8/10
Average Score - 8.5/10

Most are giving it a fair score of 8.5/10. Not everyone is proclaiming it the best phone ever made or is wowed by it. There is always room for improvement.

Linus is not a nobody. He is a well respected individual in the tech world and owns his own business. Look up Linus Tech Tips. https://linustechtips.com/main/ & http://www.linusmediagroup.com/history/

Oh please Linus was a low level chair moistener at NCIX and he has reasons for saying what he says and shilling what he shills.

In fairness though, some of his reviews are well done. But this was semi-assed and it was almost like he didn’t take time to use the phone.

So it sounds like this is another silly nobody, without any technical acumen, with a spastic, loud delivery - no thanks, won't even help the revenue generation with a click. 🙂
He’s pretty well known and respected in tech circles actually....

Linus who?? Thread title is a bit misleading/click-bait: stopped after five seconds due to not Peanuts or Torvalds. If one of them had an opinion...

I don’t care if you disagree. My cousin met him in person as they have a big YouTube channel as well and they were at the same tech event and he was quite the douche in person. Very arrogant. Respect is earned, not given.
Agreed. I refuse to watch his videos and will always remember him as the NCIX techboi making product placement videos for that sleazy company (which is going bankrupt)

I couldn't care less if he's an owner or moderator of a tech site. He's over the top on delivery and complains about f#$#ing dongles? Really?

Haha no kidding! YT is creating personalities that no one would ever know otherwise, many of whom are just making content that has no real value.

"Tech circles". You mean gadget circles.

I dunno... an overwhelming majority of Linus' videos are still PC hardware or PC gaming related. That sounds like "tech" to me.

While there are some smartphone videos sprinkled in there too... I wouldn't call Linus a "gadget" guy.

Out of his last 24 videos... 16 are PC related... 3 are news (WAN Show)... and 5 are smartphone/gadget/other.

I don't think you can say Linus runs in "gadget circles"

And yet people still care about his opinion more than yours
