Earth to Ten-Oak-Druid, come in please....

There is absolutely no reason to suspect the new macs won't run SL.

What is the network bandwidth from your planet to planet Earth?

Haven't you seen the "special builds" of Apple OSX for new hardware over the years? Special kits with drivers for the new/changed devices on new Apple hardware?

10.6.0 doesn't have Thunderbolt drivers - how can you install SL on a Thunderbolt disk? Oh wait, never mind, there are no Thunderbolt disks available for sale.

I'm glad I wasn't around messageboards when Apple dropped the 3.5' disk for USB. Can just imagine the outrage. APPLE WHAT ABOUT OUR OPTIONS WAAAAAAAA APPLE IS FINISHED I HATE YOU STEVE JOBS.

Why is anyone bringing up the floppy disk? When the FD was eliminated, the OD had been standard, on all computers for 10 years at least. The floppy disk statements, are irrelevant.

So are some of you trying to tell me that it is your contention that if I buy a new MBP with Lion on it, that I will have to go out and buy a SL disk to be able to do a fresh install? Do you think Apple will sell SL DVD's to ship out with new machines?

Sorry, I just don't see it. I will be shocked  if there is no option to burn some kind of bootable backup. What that entails we will see, but I don't think Apple is going to keep churning out Snow Leopard disks just so people can reinstall Lion when needed. But Apple has surprised me before.

People use that as their "go to" play. In reality it wasn't forward thinking, floppy was on the way out (unlike optical) and Apple cut it early to save some coin. PC manufacturers kept it till it was well over. I prefer the latter. App store should show they will not use optical anymore at Apple. iWork, FCX, Logic (kind of funny they use that name for software since Apple has little), etc... all will be only available there.

So its either get it via DD if your using a Mac or nothing at all. They might cut Avid and others off as well if they can. Steve had an amazing vision and must see it through. Thats one of the reasons why they stay at 5-7% and will never go beyond that.

Oh and insert record breaking sales etc... since that will be the go to for my reply. It don't mean a thing if you can't sustain it. I have my doubts they will sustain when you run your company like Nazi Germany.

EDIT: I realized I used a "go to" comment at the end. stupid me. It happens.

Oh dang. It finally happened: Someone equated Steve Jobs to Hitler. LOL.

I totally am on your side of the argument ... but I did chuckle that you pulled out the 'holy grail' of online debates - comparing the object of your opposition to Nazi Germany/Hitler.

Good stuff.

O damnit!!! HAHA I did do the "go to" Hitler comment when I was going after others for their "go to" comments about floppy and such. LOL

Tail between my legs. I don't think he is like Hitler obviously, has some things similar though. Wow I cant believe I owned myself though. haha

You guys are weird with your advanced tech talk arguments. Just buy it if you want and don't buy it if you don't want it.

"Der heilige Apfel ist das Gleiche gegen die Nazi-Flagge!!"

(The holy Apple is the same compared to the Nazi flag)

I can just see someone do that...wouldn't surprise me at all :)

There is no way from getting away with a physical or digital back up of your own , in you house, on your harddrive . Apple nice try

I call BS on this one. How does Steve's iPhone not auto-correct "Leopaard"?

I'm the one who sent this email. I thought the typo might have been him subtly mocking the fact that I wrote "exited" instead of excited.

No.

Thanks for the response. Just out of curiosity, was that you subtly mocking my typo?

You can clean install Snow Leopaard first.

Steve,

I'm really exited about Lion, but I'm a bit anxious about the absence of any physical media in the event of a crash where I need to do a clean install. Will Lion still provide a way to make a bootable image in the event that I need to start from scratch?

Thanks,
hgdf

Apparently the SL disk Apple will provide with the new Macs will have a 10.6.8 installer instead of 10.6.0.

If you are going to make a big deal about this supposed email from SJ then it is ridiculous to think Apple wouldn't provide a disk with the new macs.

Get real.

Besides the only problem with what you are suggesting would be if the internal drive was TB. Who cares if SL has no TB driver if you are installing for an upgrade to Lion? And the current laptops have TB ports. Do they come with an advanced Lion OS? Or do they run SL.

Oh wait. You just wanted to get in a snarky off topic comment about TB drive availability didn't you? You weren't trying to make a point at all.

So which Mac are planning to get this fall tat you are so concerned about?

It surprises me actually because you usually try to show off about building your own computer and now you can't handle installing the OS on an external drive? What's going wrong? One minute you are a computer pro and now you can't handle that? I would explain to you how you how to install the OS on an external drive but I don't think you can handle it. Ask someone to do it for you. Everyone should do this with any OS for diagnostics.

You know what? Apparently Apple is trying to screw us over. It is a grande scheme to laugh at us when we go to install a new hard drive and get stuck. This supposed SJ email just proves Apple has no intentions of providing an installation disk. You're right. I'll never buy another Apple product. Those SOB's!

Care to link to any of those "show off" posts?

My last DIY was a Q6600 on an x38 mobo - which is pretty ancient....

And, BTW, what's an "external drive"? Is that what you buy after you've realized that your system is too small for what you need to do?

steve jobs is a visionary, nobody doubts that! he is the driving force behind apple's success. once he leaves the company, apple won't be the same. you know it, he knows it, everyone knows it. without a strong leader, like he is, apple's success will decline. i'm not saying they'll go bankrupt, like they almost did in the 90's, but i highly doubt that apple will continue to present record sales, record incomings and so on.

i think that's why he tries so hard right now to establish a strong foundation, to ensure the well being of his company, after he is gone. he knows better than any of us that, once you enter the apple ecosystem and made yourself comfortable it's very hard to leave. well, not so much for the power user, but it certainly is for the average joe user.

This is my guess:

Right now you can boot from usb, firewire, built in CD.
Could it be that Lion will be available from iCloud?

i.e. added boot option to boot from LAN (connecting to icloud)?

That will be the best since Apple can keep updating the Lion versions so all the minor released / patches are "slipstreamed".

You heard it here!! Let there be iCloud!:D

This story is false.

I am an Apple Developer, so I have access to Lion. I right-clicked on the install app (Show Package Contents) - Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 4.app - to find the file called "InstallESD.dmg" in the following directory:

Code:
/Contents/SharedSupport/

Once you copy this file to your Desktop you can burn this disc image to a DVD+R with Disk Utility (Burn) or Toast 11. Real simple.

Or you can put this disc image on a USB flash drive, like I did, and easily use that to install Lion on any Mac you have. I did this on my MacBook for testing purposes. Worked like a charm too. Once I booted up with Lion on the USB flash drive I wiped the entire hard drive with Disk Utility. Did a clean install of Lion and was ready to go. When Apple released the update to DP4 my MacBook updated Lion normally through Software Update.

I agree with you on these emails are probably hoaxed just to get a flame war started like it already has. I have no doubts that Apple is trending away from physical media for distribution, but they can't just stop people from using it. In my humble opinion, they will probably add a burn to disc option to the installer on release date, so that people will be able to do this easily once it released to the general public.

I'm honestly more worried that they still don't have native iSCSI and Virtualization support out of the box.

no one is denying that! but until now we don't know if this will be possible in the final version. and if it is possible, will you be asked for a valid apple id during installation or right after it? that are things we don't know yet.

if an installation doesn't require an apple id, then maybe some apple retail stores will offer to sell you a copy on dvd or usb stick.

some people (me included) don't like to use the mas or even don't want to create an apple id, for whatever reason. i thought about getting an itunes gift card and use that to make the purchase, but this kind of payment method isn't available in my country :(

I really can't see the problem. If you need to replace the hdd yourself instead of taking it to a professional you'll have options. Macs that are shipped with 10.7 will have a restore media DVD or USB. Macs that are shipped with 10.6 you can use the restore DVD/USB then use the 10.7 upgrade. If you're smart you can burn off the upgrade app to a DVD when you get it off the app store.

Apple is like a drug dealer changing his product.

The apple computer and OSX is pot.

The IOS is cocaine.

Drug dealer makes more money on cocaine and wants to stop wasting time with pot but can't just cut them off completely so slowly starts to put cocaine into the pot he sells, and every week increases the amount of coke and decreases the amount of pot until the buyer only wants the coke and could care less about the pot. Now he has a new cocaine buyer and he can stop selling the pot.

Say goodbye to the OSX and computers you all know and love. Its coming.

People have been downloading operating systems for ages. Our MSDN library allows for Vista and Win7 ISO downloads. All Linux distributions are ISO images.

Having appstore that just downloads and installs all your software is great.

Some people have MBPs and iMacs with dvd drives, true.

Some people have MBAs or Optibayed MBPs, also true.

So, for everybody, just an official tutorial on how to backup your Lion .dmg on a USB flash disk would suffice. You install it, enter your apple-id (far easier than the bloody windows registration process) and you're good to go.

This time, "good to go" means that you just re-download all your software from the appstore and fire it up.

So what you are telling me is that they are not going to go through the expense of putting Lion on a recovery disc, but they will go through the expense putting the latest update of SL on one? If they were going to go through all that trouble, why not just put Lion on it?
