What is missing from Mail is the possibility to return unwanted email.

Always made me feel good to return unwanted stuff. Even if it doesn't make a difference. Better then just deleting it.

Gizmodo Still Sour over Raid

Obviously Gizmodo is still sour over the raid of one of it's reporter's house after it stole the iPhone prototype.
Too bad for Gizmodo. It's unbiased reporting is as obvious as a Lion in an aviary.

stop

could you stop quoting gizmodo, they're not credible in any way. The sooner people start ignoring them the better the web as a whole will become.

The security and low level file system changes are a very welcome upgrade. Of course they are long overdue, with proper ASLR being implemented on alternative platforms for quite some time, and disk-level encryption available for years too*. The sandbox is a great feature though, making Mac OS X even more secure than the alternatives.

The UI redesign is good as well, the blue bits were quite jarring. The new buttons look good too.

I don't like the leather look of Address Book or iCal. I can understand this type of UI on an iPad, but on a computer monitor it is jarring. All the issues in the Ars review seem valid here.

I like the concept of keeping expose and spaces together, but you really do need to be able to rearrange spaces (so that you always know that ctrl+#num will go to the space you want).

I'm glad the development environment is simpler with the automatic reference counting, even though it isn't perfect.

Mail.app looks like a good upgrade too.

All-in-all, I'll wait for .1 or .2 before upgrading, but for £21 I think it is well worth it.

* of course Lion makes is simple and accessible for every user, whereas I bet that most consumers don't full disc encrypt their Windows systems, or are even aware that it is an option.

Font size Finder, Mail & iTunes

Is there a way to diminish the font size in the left panel of Finder & Mail? They are now way too big.

Oddly enough, the latest iTunes left panel is still using the same small size. Which I would rather also use for Finder and Mail.

Thanks, F

A few things of note that no longer work properly:

Growl
SecondBar
Citrix Plug-in

Anyone had the same experience?

Also, when you swipe right or left on the desktop, and you have an external monitor, the icons on the second screen's desktop briefly disappear, then reappear.

I was actually looking to buy a MBA now that they're updated but considering what Lion has done to my iMac I think I might give it a miss or just wait a few months. I know its a new OS but this iMac is two weeks old and in so many ways it feels somewhat crippled. The iMac was a lot better in games and general use in SL, so I'll probably hold out on the MBA until there's a decent update because if the iMac is running similar to my old white macbook 2006 model then I don't have high hopes for the MBA.

Yes, if you go to General in System Preferences there's an option for Sidebar icon size.

You are a lifesaver! I went through all my settings, but still couldn't see it. Maybe I should keep the font size big...

Got me a little worried there, as I use Citrix to log in to one of my freelance employer's networks...

Just managed to log in OK though, so not sure what your issue might be. I have no idea about what version etc I'm using though - I just have my bookmark and log in info etc.

Mission Control

The Mac is never rebooted during this time. Have tested this with an upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion, and only Desktops 1 and 2 seems to stay, but are rest are not. For some reason, this only happens when upgrading.

However, when you do a clean install of Lion, the apps you donate to a given desktop are not remembered when you close them and reopen. They all appear on Desktop 1 as if you never set it up.

Logging in worked fine, but actually starting the virtual apps fails for me. Ill click on a virtual app icon, and previously the app would start with a status bar loading window. for me, that no longer happens, and none of the virtual apps launch.

How friendly is this with the older white MacBooks? how to find out?

I installed Lion on my 2007 Core 2 Duo macbook with 2 GB RAM. No problems so far. I'm not seeing any performance drops compared to SL's performance.

I'm quite happy with it so far.

mission control = fail... give an option for old spaces please apple

Can someone explain why some people are not liking the new spaces implementation? Because I tried once spaces before Lion and never find it convenient and now I love to swipe between full screen apps.

Spaces

I just got used to it in Lion.

Its actually easier then setting it up in Preferences...

I guess, maybe because the way you set it now relies on you swiping to the desktop your want to set up the app to, rather than just doing it all via System Preferences.

Just copy over the clone you made of your SnowLeopard disk (using CCC or SuperDuper) before you upgraded. Let it run overnight and you'll be back to scratch first thing in the morning.

You did make a bootable backup before you upgraded, didn't you? ;)

I assume Time Machine would work as well? Not that I'm going to try it...

ars technica, though it has it's faults like every publication, has always produced OUTSTANDING OS X reviews with every major release, and their Lion review is no different. Yes it is long, yes there are parts you won't understand (most of you anyway, but those parts can be skipped, although still worth reading), but it is extremely detailed and you'll love reading it. I haven't looked at Anandtech's review yet, but they usually bring their A game when it comes to in depth reviews. If the Pogues and Mossbergs of the mainstream media leave your inner geek wanting more, go to ars and go to anandtech, you won't be disappointed.

Edit: don't waste your time and leave yourself short, read the whole damn thing!

Well, if ars technica could keep their servers from melting (someone else mentioned it here and it happened to me too), I would read the whole damn thing. So, instead, I read the Anandtech review, which is detailed and outstanding, with lots of screen sots to illustrate exactly what they are talking about.

modded windows

When a modded window appears in Lion (e.g. that is a window that needs your attention ((Do you want to empty trash?, Clearing History etc)), any apps you open in other space in the mean time "loose" there space.

Yeah, Blasphemy! Blasphemy!
How can someone dare not like anything by Apple?

Their review was trash, I'm not a fan of everything Apple do, for one I think they could have handled the Final Cut launch a lot better, but Mac OS X Lion is a new direction they're going with this OS and I love it! Yes it's not perfect, there are bugs, but give it a few months and you will have a brilliant OS. So many little things enhance the way you work - personally I think the negative reviews are from people who are just ignorant to the direction we are going. And to be honest this is the first time I've even heard of Gizmodo for 12 months. Seem like they made a bad review just to get some attention.

Well said! Criticism is ok, but we should stay balanced and also watch the big picture that clearly is developing. I have no doubt that Apple has a nice vision of how technology - or should I say magic? - works in the future. I like the direction with all this stuff flying wirelessly, syncing on the background without fuss. And I eagerly wait next moves. Oh boy. Am I a fanboy or what?

I love :apple:

So far I'm liking Lion. Its not the upgrades that we've seen in the past, though.

There doesn't seem many obvious bugs.. which is good

Launchpad seems half hearted. I'm thinking "Why - it doesn't serve much purpose". It will take a while to get all applications sorted out to be useful. I have pages and pages of applications, just dumped on Launchpad. Its too crowded by default. I'm sure this is the way Apple will go in the future. They'd better make it useful.

Why did Apple get rid of iSync? All you need is to copy across iSync from Snow Leopard and you'll be syncing once more. The framework is still there - the GUI is just missing?!

Whats with iCal and Addressbook. In this day and age an application doesn't need to mimic real life objects so users understand the purpose. Its inconsistent with the rest of the GUI. Tacky. Pretty bone-headed move, IMO. .

Lion seems very much consumer focused. Power users won't find much new functionality.

For $29 is worth the upgrade. Had I paid $129, I'd be feeling very disappointed.

The font size on the left Mail pane.. yup, way too big!
