Instal

I just got an error message after downloading and starting the install process: "Cannot install. Your hard drive is damaged." !! It's only a year old and I've never had any issue. Attempting restart...

1. Using Disk utility to verify. It stopped and says repair it, but Repair button is greyed out :(.

Very simply, if you work with text, you need large non-aliased type that works across a bunch of different application, and while a Google search will yield a few half solutions, the problem is real, significant, and NOT resolved with the release of Lion.

what's your problem with the fonts?

I'm anxious, but I use my iMac for work as well (running VMWare with Win-7 as part of my work environment). Are there any Snow Leopard apps (non-Roseetta) that have problems in Lion, or do they work, but just not support some of the new features?

Holding off for now.

I use Win-7 through Parallels for work. Aside from having a problem with app updates since I installed Lion, everything else is working fine.

Ordered my 13" MacBook Air today!

Even until yesterday, my heart was set on getting the new Mac mini for $600, but today I ended up spending nearly $1300 after student discount + discover 5% cashback. My wife is definitely not going to be happy about this. :D

This is how :apple: gets you...

I love how people are impressed at how few bugs.

of course there are not a lot of bugs, its snow leopard with a slight re-skin

anyhoo, think ill stick with SL until i can buy Lion media, no media, no sale for an OS. I like to be able to do a clean install

Loving Lion - No more Spotlight Calculator?

Loving it so far, but I did have to calculate something quickly a few minutes ago, and realized I couldn't do it in spotlight anymore. Anyone else seeing this?

Walt Mossberg

I really don't think this old bag of hurt should be writing articles or reviews on an OS. This guy belongs in the black and white TV age. Best operating system out there? For who, old veterans like himself? The only thing he does on his computer is update his bias towards a particular company (apple) or other piece of news and collect his paycheck. This guys is clueless about the requirements for other uses from a computer beyond his mickey mouse bull***t.

I'm NOT saying OS X isnt great, its definitely is, but he needs to pull his head out of Steve Jobs' ass and realize OS X isnt a platform that can be used by anyone. In that regard, it is NOT the best OS, it is simply, and SUBJECTIVELY the best OS for purposes that resemble *his* limited use of a computer.

Pundits like him need to thrown out of the office and given 2 weeks severance, I really can't stand this one sided morons writing reviews and skewing the publics perception of what should ultimately be a choice made by THEM, not guys like Walt or Big Brother Steve Jobs.

I wish *every* review was not only accurate, but above all else, OBJECTIONABLE.
Reviews are there to help people choose. It is obvious that they are subjective, as an objective (I think that is the word you wanted to use there at the end) review would be a specs description.
I also believe that MacOSX is the best OS for most uses and most users out there.

I think Apple didn't think this all the way through. I only have a Sprint Mobile Braodband Card with a 5GB/month limit. The download speeds are terrible. How am I supposed to download Lion. The Apple Store is an hour and a half from my house. After calling Apple and being transferred many times, they tell me that I can buy a Flash Drive with Lion on it for $69 in August. I said that I have enough flash drives and asked why they can send me a disk and only charge me $29? The representative didn't even answer. I think it is outrageous for Apple to punish customers with slower internet and make them pay $40 extra dollars. I am feeling Apple doesn't care about me because I am not offered high speed internet in my area.
No one is punishing you. It's not apples fault you have a slow, capped, ISP. You're in the vast minority here. They're offering up alternatives in a month so you'll just have to wait a little longer. Your argument is as valid as someone saying "Apple is discriminating against people without money... how do they expect to use their software without $30?"

Anyone having an issue with Software Updater after upgrading to Lion?

I have 3 pending updates, Remote Desktop Client, iWorks and iTunes.

Telling it to install updates and it complete stalls on the download (I'm at my office, which has 100 mbit bandwidth to the internet) almost instantly. Made it to 2.8 MBs of RDC the first time and 91 MBs of iTunes on the second try.

Forced quite the updater and now it won't open at all. After reboot, the process starts over, sticking on downloads.

Seems it was getting stuck between each update. I've been able to install the updates 1 at a time with no trouble. Odd.

My noob question:

Will I have to re-install my non-Apple software again, or will the Lion upgrade be seamless? (In particular, Parallels and Windows software in that virtual partition.)

it'll most likely be seamless.

It's pretty much just swapping out the Snow Leopard folder for Lion.

barely had any bugs every since DP1 and still love my lion, gizmodo is like the "perezhilton" of gadgets

what about "the stumbles back"

before i am going to get it I want to know what the "few stumbles back" are. I don't want to buy the "new and improved" only to find out it has taken away features that are important to me. example: imovie.

Here's the conclusion...you tell me if it's what you think or not:

Sure I agree to a certain extent, I haven't tried it yet, I will soon, I just want to make sure I won't get any bugs, namely with Logic. I may or may not like the new direction they are taking. But right now, it seems like Mission Control/Spaces was thought out to bring the regular users to use some advanced features, not for the power user. I guess after Snow Leopard, I expected more from Apple. Mind you there are still some things I'm eager to get my hands on like Versions and Resume But hey, there's only so much you can do to something that's already great.

Also, real classy, wikus.

iMovie is part of iLife tho and has nothing to do with the OS. they did however take out FrontRow

Gizmojerks

I can't stand anything Gizmodo. I haven't read an article on there since they paid a photographer -- paparazzi style -- to get pictures of Steve Jobs' house. I wish they'd go under.

Gizmodo just slammed the review, because they are all jaded now after Apple shunned them by blocking them from all Apple events. It's their fault for trying to zing them on the iPhone 4 prototype.

I also agree Gizmodo's opinion means nothing to me.

I have the ability to pay the extra $40, but why should I have to? Apple should accommodate all of their customers without some having to pay more than others for the same capability. I do not see why they didn't release their alternatives at the same time of the software.

you should not be happy for getting married while being a student! :)

Go read Ars' 19-page review, and then come back and say that again with a straight face.

Go ahead, I'll wait. ;)

I do not see why they didn't release their alternatives at the same time of the software.

Given at WWDC they said pretty clearly that Lion would be MAS-only, it could have been a last-minute change of mind to decide to offer USB keys.

Gizmodo is a laughable POS of a site.

I find all the "IT'S NOT WORTH IT!!!!" posts funny, I'd pay $29 for the new mail app alone. People expect a lot for $29 these days :)

I've installed Lion on my MBP for now and will play with it for a week or two before the iMac and the Mac Pros get it. So far so good, though I did lose CS2 (I have CS5 but what can I say, sometimes I just like GoLive and Imageready for 'knock it out in ten mins' simplicity).

I like full screen mode, but by losing the dock I'm also losing notification badges on stuff like Mail and Twitter which I used to glance at each time I got back to my mac.
