What's your situation in relation to a MacBook Pro?

I'm not really impressed with this update (because I was hoping for a revision). I'd say the most meaningful thing is the GPU, which is nice for people who play games or do any sort of visual editing. I was hoping that the 2.6 would be standard for the high end, but alas no... still gotta shell for the BTO option. Also because the only thing that was bumped was the CPU speed (kinda) and the L2 cache, I'm waiting for Montevina (and hopefully a case update). If I wanted the ones out now I would just by a 7 month old one off ebay, which would be pretty much just as fast as these 'updates'. Here's hoping they don't find a way to make Montevina just an update.

One word "Heat". The lack of 100+ degrees on your lap and needing an external cooling device justifies the new MBP. IMO

Overall I think the design is excellent, afterall the Macbook Pro is still the most used laptop in advertisements - to me that speaks volumes about the quality of the design!

The main thing I would like to see changed is the keyboard, the Macbook keyboard is much nicer to use in my opinion. But the design of the whole machine does not need to be changed.

The designs of the PB's and MBP's have been wonderful, but both design and technology move on. MBA is a perfect example. However, if this is the design you love, now is the time to buy because it IS going to change - and sooner rather than later.

The Pismo was once the laptop of choice for ads, films, TV, etc. - where is your Pismo now? Mine is on a shelf getting dusty (as beautiful as it still is).

O.K. worker that sleeps, I am curious as to when you think the re-design of the cases and what not will happen. What exactly do you think will be re-designed on the new PB's and MBP's? Then we shall wait and watch. I'm curious if indeed this is the last of the present MBP designs. Let me know what you think when you wake up.

Dilema!!!!

Blast this is a hard decision for me:

A. I could get the current MBP in a month by my birthday and have it to use ALL summer! I still love the current design.

B. Wait for the next model. What if I don't like the new design. But maybe it'll be better looking? But I don't really want an air styled design. I like the curved rectangle look of the MBPs and MBs. However, regardless of how amazing the new design may look, what about all the issues there could be. The last thing I want to do is be fixing my computer all the time in college.

I really don't think I personally will notice a performance update with Montevina and I don't think the specs will change much. People keep saying it will be thinner, but here's why I disagree:

1. Mac laptops already have heating issues. Make the thing any smaller and it'll overheat (BAD!).
2. The nvidia 8600M is about the best that can fit and the 8800M is larger and creates more heat. Apple needs to future proof itself. If they get too ahead of themselves and make every thing super thin, there will be no room for extra features. Its better to have more space for extra features, than make an already very thin laptop thinner. Honestly, anyone who thinks 1" is too thick needs to take a shopping trip through the PC isle and compare.
3. if they make it thinner, it may resemble the Air's style (all curvy and such). While the air looks amazing, on a larger laptop, all the weird curves make not look right and may make the computer look too complicated and I associate Apple's design with simple. Simple usually is better. What is it I hate about the look of every PC laptop? All the stuff. Too many designs, to busy, and too clunky. I love that when you close a MB or MBP the whole thing is symetric and smooth. Also I'd rather have a solid laptop than one that resembles a wedge from the side (slopes from 1" to .5" or something)

But its a hard decision. I don't want to buy now then see the new one and wish I'd waited. Yet if the new is nothing special, I'll wish I'd bought already.

PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR 2 CENTS!!!! Also does anyone have evidence for a redesign this summer. What if they wait until Nahelem. or will Nahelem premier on the Montevina Platform. Also this mumbo jumbo of the Air raising the bar for Apple's designs. HOW? THe air is a bare minimum computer. You can't create a notebook like the Air and fit the Pro's specs. So what of the air besides keyboard, magnetic latch, and bigger trackpad would they put? Make it curvier?

Wow, if that doesn't answer your own question, I don't know what will.

Don't worry about the MBP "redesign", the furore about a redesign has been ushered on completely by us fanboys, with absolutely no indication from Apple of any such occurence. While it is anticipated that Montevina's requirement for a revised interior will somehow coincide with an exterior refresh, there's nothing concrete.

Plus, bird in the hand and all that... people had been "expecting" a Penryn MBP since MWSF08 in mid-January, regardless of Apple's plans for the product. Don't take a bunch of people saying "Summer is inevitable" as gospel.

Last I checked, the last three MacBook updates (Nov 06 - 2.33, June 2007 - 2.4, Feb 08 - 2.5) have been spread apart by about eight months apiece, which would suggest a Late 2008 release (Nov?) before the product could be considered the slightest "overdue" on the balance of averages.

Good point. I was wondering where people were getting this new design idea because I can't find any evidence of it on the net. My big thought was, If I get it in April, only 2 months later would be June. But like you said, they may not even have it out until late summer/fall.

June is when Intel is rumored to announce Montevina. I doubt any laptops will be available immediately. There's also nothing so groundbreaking about it that it would require a case redesign. Apple would be smarter to wait for Nehalem/Calpella. I'm not saying it won't be redesigned; nobody knows.

While some people are twiddling their thumbs waiting for Penryn/Montevina, I'll have been using my Penryn/SR for months. I won't be disappointed if it does get redesigned because I don't want to be a Rev A beta tester. They might even make some changes like dropping ports that I would need. I'd rather stick with a stable platform.

To each his or her own.

Hey txhil: I know little of the ways of Cupertino, CA., but, based on what I've read, many tech writers were disappointed in the current MBP upgrade and in keeping to the current design. If you haven't held, touched, used, and played with the MBA yet, go to an Apple store and do it. I was not only surprised at how light and thin it was, but also how well built it was. It really made my PB feel cheap! The next MBP will not be an MBA of course. But it will have a larger track pad (like the MBA) to support the many growing finger commands of multi-touch, a magnetic latch, a MUCH nicer keypad, and the design will be slimmer and hopefully more ergo-dynamic.

I hope the update will be over the summer, but of course I have no idea, and if I did, Apple would sue me and then offer me a s**t load of money to close down my site and reveal my source!

All this being said, if you were to buy an MBP today you would have a great laptop.

Nite.

I actually prefer the current keyboard design. I think the chicklet keyboard actually has the cheaper, and kidish look. I can't decide if I'd rather have the "easy to open" push button or the "never will break" magnetic latch. I have the push button on my ibook G4 1.33 Ghz and its worked fine and been very easy and dependable. Also I won't mind if they got rid of the plastic edging and did something like they did with the macbook's edges. But who knows?

My thoughts are, I might as well wait for June and see what WWDC brings, but what if I wait all summer and nothing comes out until Fall. I'll have gotten the current model anyways, because August is as long as I'm going to wait. And wouldn't Apple wait for Nahelem for a redesign and wouldn't the student ipod sale be a great time to get rid of the current models in time for a refresh in the fall. Plus if they did update in June, that would be 7 months until the following MWSF. Hmmm, its hard to say. Intels been doing some weird stuff lately making it hard to predict.

If you need a new laptop now, buy now. The current MBP is excellent. I thought I couldn't wait as my PB is just over 5 years old. When this update came out I just wasn't convinced that this was the right time to buy despite my much desired move to the MBP and Intel. This is a personal and intuitive feeling, but it is also brought on by seeing the update of iMAC and the new MBA. I felt that they raised the design bar much higher. So, I maxed out my RAM on the PB and bought a very small 250 gig G-Tech Mini HD to off load many of my PSD and other digital media, clearing space on the PB HD. Hopefully this buys me some time.

I'm disappointed that I will have to wait to run Aperture and some other programs that I could use. But this computer still runs CS, Illustrator, and Sketchup and so I wait. But I understand everyone who doesn't want to wait as there is no sure thing and certainly not a fixed date - look how long we had to wait for this past update ... it felt like it was coming every Tuesday and then it didn't ... until it did.

Oh well yeah, my 17" MBP was ordered on the 26th of Feb. but due to it's specialized configuration it won't even arrive until the 11-17th. Whats that about? Hell I really don't know , but I have been waiting since Sept. so a little longer is no big deal. Besides all that waiting allowed me to save for the 17" instead of the 15". My Ti powerbook G4 has been good to me and I've already sold it for $600.

I think if there is a re-design it will come with Napalm(I love the smell of that...and yes I know how it is really spelled .. Napalm is just a play on words for all you serious computer platform spellers.) addition in 2009 which would give that MBA it's own special design for a year before anymore"air streamed" designs arrive. If it's so amazing I can't pass it up then I'll sell the Penryn and get that one.

I agree about the bigger track pad and I do think there will be a new keyboard though I like the present ones. Maybe Bluray and maybe a magnetic latch.

I'm glad we are able to just speculate for I would not want to know this info because I am sure the Apple Mafia would be on my tail. Oh yes people they exist. Thanks for your input. We shall meet again in other forums I'm sure

Today I placed my order for the 17" MBP with hi res glossy screen.
Also ordered vmware fusion and the 1 Tb Time Capsule.
(the mac mini to be used as a server, will have to wait for another month or three)

work's getting me a new MBP, so today i just put in my request:

2.4GHz, glossy, 250GB HD, 4GB ram, iwork, applecare.

should be waiting for me when i return from spring break on the 16th...what a great day monday the 17th will be ;)

now to find a case and an external drive...

I cant stop playing around with my MBP, have it since Monday, and I didnt even imagine how much better it is than win...I should have switched sooner :D

DUDEEE Same here!!!
I ordered the morning they came out... I'm getting the LED 17'' HR Glossy with a 7200rpm 200gb drive, and expected shipment is between today (6th) and the 10th...
I'm aching to get it!! But just like you, I have been waiting since September so I guess having an aprox date is something already! :)

I also agree with ya (and have posted earlier) that a new keyboard "a la Air" wouldn't have been great, but I'm not too sad with the current (updated) one! I would've liked to have seen included a 8800GTS or something... But I'll be fine!

This will probably be my laptop for ... a while! I don't see myself upgrading in less than 1 1/2-2 years... By then, the new design will have been ironed out and new features added so a new purchase will be "safe"!

PLUS by then will be having laptop eight-core CPUs and stuff and Nvidia's numbering system will have passed ATI's current model numbers! :p haha

Oh gosh... I *need* my laptop ASAP!! This G4 867Mhz dual just doesn't cut it for the kind of design work I have been doing :(

After taking the slow boat out of Shanghai my 17" high res Penryn MBP is officially on Merican ( Thats Texan for American) soil. Yee-Haw. It's now in Tenn. and should be on my doorstep by Mon. or Tues. :D
