Not sure if this is the right place, but I have a legitimate question about the 3D mapping.

What is its purpose? Is it just to compete against Google? I mean, when I'm looking at a map or needing to see my location, I don't need a fly-over or 3D representation of my surroundings. Just a position on the map.

Am I in the minority here on the everyday practicality of this "feature?"

Aah, didn't know that, but no sign of Tower Bridge popping out of the mist. Hmm, I'm puzzled.

Here it is on mine

D'oh! Hadn't noticed the curled paper bit at bottom right to change view, DUH! Works fine now haha.

No a ton of us question the practicality. Then we were labeled as android fanboys, however.

Unless you're Spider-Man I'm not sure how practical they are.

I was unsure of its purpose at first but having spent a lot of time with it I think it's fantastic. You can check out a location before visiting, from any angle, with detail right down to the last bush. Street view on the other hand takes you down a pre-determined road of photographs and the option to explore outside of that path just isn't there.

I was a big fan of street view, but now if someone asked me if I'd like a 3D model of my next holiday destination, or street view, it would be 3D maps every time.

Same. Was doing some house-hunting. No 3D maps in my area, but good lord could you imagine?

I'm not sure if it really replaces every street view use-case with something better, but it does provide a very useful view of a place.

Personally it is a it depends. If I was a good feel of an area I will always go street view as it is much more accurate than the 3d models. For example when I was looking at apartments or possible houses to rent I would always go to street view to see if their were any to mark off my list as street view proves me critical information about an area on if I would fit in, how well maintained is the area and so on. 3d modeling does not provide me with pictures of the cars in the area, or how well maintained is the outside of the houses and other complexes in the area.

As for navigation I call it pretty useless for the most part. I know most of the time on Google maps I am in map view. I rarely use satellite view unless I am a little loss and trying to find something based on a building. Find it then I flip back to map view.

When will Sweden be in 3D? Växjö?

You do know that Morrus is being sarcastic, even though he/she didn't use an emoticon. There is no published schedule of what/when Apple is doing on Maps. So asking when Apple is going to put xxxx in Maps is like asking what days will it rain on next month.

The list of scheduled city updates/release dates will be available on the Apple site on September 31.
