I think I read others having issues with the STM Skinny, but mine from my ipad 2 works great.

Just got Targus slim from Amazon and it works, also havw Marware CEO with no problem. Targus Versavu doesn't work.
Please add Marware ceo case to w,orking list. Not the best case, but i like it more and more.

I also think it is polarity. I spent 10 minutes or so measuring and playing with a small rare earth magnet because I was about to cut a small slit in my targus and add my own magnet before I realized it had one but was not working. My testing found that one pole of the magnet had a larger sweet spot and worked better than when I flipped it over. I put the magnet on the lid where the targus magnet was and it stuck to it which was the opposite polarity from what I found worked best. The position of the magnet was where I was going to put mine so I am thinking it just needs to be flipped over also

It could potentially be the SIZE of the magnet (maybe Apple used larger ones that manage to cover the repositioned sensor in the new iPad), or it's also been suggested it could be the polarity of the magnets.

I'm leaning toward the polarity issue. Reason:

In the case of my Maroo Moko II case, it IS the polarity, a fact that I proved in this blog posting today:

Just got home with the Targus Slim Case. It fits really well but the deal breaker is the Magnetic on/off. Say's it works but it doesn't.

First one I bought didn't work either. Went back to Best Buy and found one that worked.

Can anybody confirm for me if the Marware Microshell Folio is working? I work abroad and am having my iPad and case brought to me in a couple of weeks so I can't test it out before having it brought over here. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Mine was delivered on Friday and when my iPad arrived it did not fit. Tried my iPad 2 and it fit perfectly. Sending it back and going with a Targus Slim Case.

Dang, I really tried to find one when I went back to Best Buy but I went 0-15! Not one of those suckers worked. I ordered one of these from Amazon, got great reviews from iPad 3 owners and the auto switch works.

I was reading your "vendor claims" claim section and saw the Devicewear Peak and they are selling the non working ones as "used". It is a very good price so if you don't care about the on/off (you are probably not reading this thread) or want one for your ipad2. I wonder if we will see more manufactures dumping their bad products for cheap?

Reading a lot of threads, it appears Apple changed the polarity of their on/off magnet. Some cases with a beefy magnet still work while many others that were designed for the New iPad do not. I would like to keep a running list of what works and what does not. Please post your results if you have a New iPad case that works, a New iPad case that does not work, or an iPad 2 case that both fits and the smart on/off switch works and I will add them to the list.

CONFIRMED WORKING:
Apple Smart Cover
Choiix wake up folio for ipad 2 (barely fits and smart cover works)
Switcheasy Canvas (for some people, problems for others)
Sena Florence
Piel Frama Magnetic Case
rooCASE Duel View
Bear Motion leather folio (kdoug claims worse quality than iPad 2)

VENDOR CLAIMS WORKS:
Devicewear Detour 360
Devicewear Peak
Yoobao Executive iPad 2 (works for iPad 3, but iPad 3 case coming)

CONFIRMED NOT WORKING:
BOOQ Folio
Targus VersaVue
Targus Slim Case
Mophie cases
Charcoal SwitchEasy
rooCASE Convertible

HIT OR MISS:
Targus VueCase
Targus Slim Case (mostly miss)
Maroo - Black (mostly miss)
STM Skinny (company will replace non working ones)

Randy, the Bear Motion leather folio magnetic feature DOES NOT work. My mistake, I misspoke and have changed my response. Sorry for the error.

Good video Mark. Now I have to decide, do I go for a discount from the vendor and hope I don't have to pay to return one if it's bad, or pay full price for a case at a store that I can return the case to.

You can add the Otterbox Defender to the list of cases that don't work. I'll be calling them tomorrow to return mine. Their screen protector also messes up the visibility of the screen. Kinda defeats the purpose of having a new iPad if the screen looks worse.

The Khomo Dual Case which I reviewed here does not fit the new iPad AND the smart cover function also does not work. It almost fit, but the iPad would not snap in.

I hope a new, compatible version will become available soon. I like the thin design of this case and it protects the iPad on all sides. And the price is great.

maroo roto II (red leather)-not working
maroo koru II (leaf design)-not working

My Maroo Roto II (red leather) works perfectly.
My Maroo Moko II (black leather) doesn't work.

Reason: The polarity of the magnet in the cover is reversed on these two covers and the new iPad 3 has a new type of sensor/switch that is sensitive to polarity.

Just went to the Targus website to check to see if they mention anything about the non-functionality issues mentioned here.

Found some interesting results. I found two pages about the VersaVu for the 3rd gen iPad and NEITHER even mentions a "MAgnetic on/off" function. Not a hint. There is even a 1:10 video showing off the features and no mention of the function there too.

I guess they now realize the function did not work and edited it out (until I guess they fix the issue and have new product ready to ship).

Note though that the slim case page DOES mention the magnetic on/off.

Mike

Its quite possible that its a polarity feature that apple has turned on on the IP3 otherwise, it the placement or size of the magnets in the covers that is the issue.

The apple smart covers continue to work on IP 2 and 3 and these covers have lots of magnets.

Blame your case maker for going cheap and using fewer magnets cause they figured out it would work on the ip2.
