Apple Pay can also be used within apps on devices that support Touch ID, which includes the iPhone 6, the iPhone 6 Plus, and Apple's upcoming iPad mini 3 and iPad Air 2. Apple's iPhone 5s does not appear to be compatible according to the Apple Pay website, even though it has Touch ID.

Wow, this particular example of Apple artificially making hardware obsolete is pretty bad. Worse than Mac Mini 2011 and MacBook Air 2011 owners not being able to use Handoff, despite having the correct and necessary Bluetooth 4.0 hardware.

The iPhone 5s doesn't have the "Secure Element" that is required to store your payment credentials:

With Apple Pay, instead of using your actual credit and debit card numbers when you add your card, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted, and securely stored in the Secure Element, a dedicated chip in iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.

Worked smoothly

I used Apple Pay at McDonalds this morning, it went smoothly. Nice that training for the cashiers is not necessary. Apple Pay just happens at the step where you might swipe your card, but you just touch the phone instead, no special effort by the cashier is required.

Target, Launch Partner, Not

Just tried at Target and they haven't added the NFC module to their readers. So much for being a launch partner.

Apple Pay needs Touch ID and NFC. The 5s doesn't have NFC.

I was referring to using Apple Pay for online purchases, such as using Apple Pay to order something from Target.com.
This is something the iPad Mini 3 and iPad Air 2 can do, despite not having NFC either.

However, it turns out the reason is because the Touch ID secure enclave and Apple Pay secure enclave are two different things.

I'm all "Apple Paid" up and nowhere to shop. Not one store there that I regularly shop at. Sad clown face. <joking>

I'd really love to see Apple Pay take off but it needs aggressive promotion during the holidays to encourage use, get people in the habit, and also get them to seek out Apple Pay stores. The CCs usually have holiday campaigns offering special discounts or rewards. It would be great if they focused some of those benefits to Apple Pay users.

Are in-app purchases available through browsers like Chrome at Target.com? Or only through their respective apps?

Training for the cashier? This is the same technology (NFC) that McDonalds has used for quite some time. "Apple Pay" is nothing new to these stores.

I just used it at the vending machine at work. I love it, now I need my bank to allow Apple Pay to use my debit card.

Thank you, I did not realize it was separate from the Touch ID enclave. Good info.

A new low in our culture. Using an iPhone to buy cheap fatty burgers.

So.

I'm off the get a Big Mac !!

:D

It was hard to see how overweight the workers were... no offence, I'm sure they are wonderful people, but what a sad state that the world has gotten to, and Apple just made its even more convenient to indulge in unhealthy eating.

Read again - this is for online purchases. iPads don't have NFC and they can make online purchases.

This is also why I'm glad I skipped the whole "5" generation.

Oh right yeah sorry.

Shame the iPad Mini 3 hasn't got NFC, people do carry them around and to coffee shops and places. Would have been useful.

Honestly, I'm surprised that they didn't make a single Secure Enclave+Element for both purposes. Do they not achieve the same thing.... securely storing data? Maybe they needed to keep them separate to be absolutely certain that access wasn't granted to data that wasn't applicable to the task at hand, since authenticating a fingerprint is a different task than retrieving payment credentials.

Has anyone tried this at a store not on the list? Supposedly, and store that takes NFC payments can handle Apple Pay. Curious how well it works.

Yeah, that's the one. Except now it's even more secure, it'll actually be popular and mainstream, used commonly in every day conversations, and used by millions.

I set up Google Wallet on my Nexus 4. Tried it at a Walgreen's a couple months ago. It didn't work. The store clerk had never had anyone even try it before. Apple Pay, as you say, will actually be used here in the US.

I am very surprised that Apple didn't include NFC into the new iPads. I guess they didn't think the vast majority of users would use them at point-of-sale terminals. They are probably right, but that decision only serves to increase the fragmentation of features across iOS devices.

Looks like there are still some kinks to work out.

Added both my Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards Visa and my Costco Amex. Went to the Pepsi machine here at work that takes NFC to try it out. Tried on the Visa and it declined my transaction. Tried with the Amex and the transaction when through. Under the transactions on my Visa it shows the vendor name and the price and just says declined, no other explanation. Amex shows the transaction just like a normal CC transaction.

So while it does look like it works anywhere with NFC for some reason Chase is declining my transactions while Amex is ok. And yes I did go through the verification with Chase when setting it up. I don't think you need to do anything else.

That image is misleading. I thought those were the only stores for a second.

Yeah it is, read the actual list above the image.

My bad, should of read it. Whats the point of the image then?

I've been using Google Wallet for a long time now with no issues (and my phone is encrypted). If it takes Apple to popularize an old technology then so be it... I'll be glad when cashiers stop giving me weird looks and double checking their registers to make sure I didn't just steal something. :)

Used this today already, worked so smoothly I was standing there in aww like I was supposed to do something else. I also used it at a store not listed here, so for all the people always asking if it'll work on other NFC machines, it will and it will work great!

Yes this^. Used it at CVS even though wasn't on the list I saw the symbol on the machine and thought I should just try this. Way too easy.

I remember years ago a friend having one of the first visa logo debit cards. The cashier had no idea what it was... And we politely told her that she doesn't have to understand... Just swipe it the same as you would any credit card. No need to understand that it comes from a different account. The best tech is foolproof
