Although the find in Mail is not as robust as something like Outlook, it works very well for what it is. I don't find it cumbersome at all. Yes your right about "no way to sort messages easily by subject, author, etc". Also what client do you use that let's you easily see hundreds of message subjects at once? Or are you comparing a email client to a checking on the browser? Even on Outlook I can't do that with all my mail collapsed. Lion's Mail collapse sucks, it doesn't even collapse anything(at least in the traditional sense).

Lion's Mail compared to previous versions is a huge upgrade!! I can finally use it for my personal email. Previous versions were just to horrible to use for anything. I still use Outlook for my business emails.

Apple's Mail should be as robust and powerful as Outlook or Eudora. There is no reason it has to suck. It can still have the new 'pretty' fluff, but behind the scenes, it should be functional.

Regarding the search feature, to search for something in the subject field, one must use a keystroke to get to the search box, then scroll down a list to search by subject, then find your message in an inadequate (doesn't display enough messages) message viewer. That is cumbersome. Others have pointed out that you can't just search one mailbox at a time, but that you must search all of them. That is both useless and cumbersome.

Apple Address Book used to be pretty good. It's morphed into another 'pretty' useless program that is fine for people with 20 contacts, but cumbersome for 1500 contacts.

This is too bad since Apple certainly has the ability to add power under the hood for these key programs.

They could, especially given there current size and market cap, with a bit of fine tuning, create business friendly applications that would crush Microsoft.

I really wonder what other programs and features have been wrecked in Lion.

I don't why everyone is hating on stuff in Lion. Mission Control? Lifesaver. New mail and address book looks? Who cares, as long as it works (like it does). I can go on and on. I love Lion. Especially Airdrop. Airdrop is just amazing. It's a lifesaver and just speed up my workflow when I work with other people across different computers. Lion is great, some people are just reluctant to get used to new things that change. I think Lion is headed in a great direction and all the bugs will definitely be fixed in future updates. :apple: did a great job with Lion

It doesn't work for all; just an fyi.

Lion does suck

First of all,I have never owned a pc. used them at work, but never wanted one. I currently have three mac desk tops and two mac laptops, only the latest desktop and laptop have been converted to Lion. I have owned macs since the mid 80's. In the last 6 months, i have been discouraged with safari, but figured things would get better with Lion.
I am not happy that old software is not compatible with Lion and that I did not get a warning that said software would not be compatible...ie' Quicken and others.
My biggest complaint is that in the last two weeks, programs have crashed more than they have in the last several years combined. Right now I have been fighting iPhoto for the last 5 hours. It is slow and keeps shutting down....NOT HAPPY APPLE>

Can i revert to Snow Leopard, restore Quicken data and wait until most of the bugs are fixed????

It is functional. Just because it doesn't do everything under the sun like a 3rd party client doesn't make it non functional. Like I said, I use it for personal email(3 accounts) and it does it's job perfectly. Now if anyone needs corporate/business like functions, that's what a 3rd party client is for.
This is the way it's always been, even with MS Windows.

Others have pointed out that you can't just search one mailbox at a time, but that you must search all of them. That is both useless and cumbersome.

Others are wrong. You can easily highlight any specific mailbox and have it search just for that one.

Could you explain why?

Eventually Apple will focus more on the business side. But right now they are just focused on trapping the world in it's bubble. :apple:

Anytime you want upgrade to a major new release of Mac OS X, you need to make sure that software critical to you is still compatible before you do. That is your responsibility to investigate. Blaming Apple for your mistakes is silly.

To show library folder, type the following into terminal. Replace [username] with your own username, without the brackets of course.

chflags nohidden /users/[username]/library

Awesome!

Would this also work?

Code:
chflags nohidden ~/Library/

@OP,

Thanks for the thread. Although I do like Lion, threads like yours serve a useful purpose, in that if there are ways to remedy some of the issues you brought up, they will be found here in this thread.

I believe Apple, like most companies, welcome criticisms. It makes their products/services better.

Regarding the utterly useless Lion Address Book: Why did they get rid of the 3 column approach? The new address book is cumbersome - you cannot see groups and who is in them at the same time. You have to click back and forth to see address information. This is a huge step backwards. My computer is *not* an iPhone. That is, address book should not function the same way on my computer as on the iphone/ipad. DUMB.

Why is Mail a poor choice? If you deal with 10 emails a day, it's fine. If you deal with hundreds, it's not. Unfortunately, no 3rd party app is really up to speed, especially with integration with the Mac apps (ical, Address book).

The only things still getting under my skin are

(a) the icon view no longer has the slider on the lower-right corner allowing instant resize of icons (I still have to go into view options, change, then exit, which is annoying.) It's a step backwards.

(b) well, I've not seen the MDSWorker process hog the system in some time

(c) battery life on the MacBook Pro - I did revert my MacBook Pro back to Snow Leopard because battery life dropped

Lion + Safari + MBP = POS

I have a MBP mid 2010 model 2.53Ghz 15in Core i5
Since upgrading to Lion I find that Safari gets stuck on the 'beach ball' at times too often, the 'Force Quit' does not work for it. I have installed Chrome and this functions fine. Every time there has been an update to Lion & Safari I eagerly update and run Safari for a day only to discover it has not fixed it and still locks up, slows etc. I also find since Lion, apps in the dock at times become unresponsive.
Is this a common thing with others? Is there something I can do? I did install OnyX to see if it could find any issues etc. No better as yet. I recently re-installed Lion, not a 'Clean Install' just a over write one. This also has not helped.
I do use time machine. If I do a 'Clean Install' of Lion, will Time Machine only retore my data and not the OS side of things?? Is this a safe option?

Thanks very much for any info.

BTW My take on Lion + Safari + MBP = May as well run a Windows laptop, it seems to have just as many issues

No, it is Apple's fault. They should have put it in the requirements or at least somewhere where people could see it. The average joe is not going to know the difference between a PPC application and an Intel one, remember on a Mac "things just work".

Here is something that doesn't suck: HOW FAST LION IS!

I went to officemax to look at the new PC's (I know, I know) and then I saw a macbook pro 13" i5 and WOW was it fast! iMovie launched in 5 seconds! Next time I go there i'm going to test the APP test (open all apps at the same time to see if the pro lags or not!)

Next time I go there i'm going to test the APP test (open all apps at the same time to see if the pro lags or not!)

I do this by sticking Unreal Tournament 2004 on a flash drive and play it in store. When anyone asks what I'm doing I say "I'm testing it" and don't mean it at all.

The 11" MBA makes a pretty good Unreal machine.

I like most of the changes to Lion, but I agree that the new Address Book is pretty useless from a UI perspective. Should we really need to press a button to "flip" between the Contacts view and the Groups view?

And the solution is so obvious. Either go back to the 3-pane UI used by most email programs (Groups / Contacts List / Individual View) or do something like the new Mail, with the different groups in a bookmarks bar.

Edit: Hell, even literal bookmarks for the literal address book would be better than this...

Lion, what a shame.

When Steve (R.I.P) started to loose control over Apple many of the developers at Apple want to be their own bosses. As a result we can se a lot of strange "features".
