this doesn't just apply to sports though. Imagine getting traffic alert for your area and commute.
Or if you follow and organization you can get realtime info on new and breaking news.
This is not just for sports....
Sports is obviously well suited to this, but you're absolutely correct: likely the best uses are non-sports activities. Stock market updates, pharmacy orders, food delivery, Amazon deliveries, etc. all come to mind. And there are probably a ton of others. Imagination is the key.

Awesome (not the score, but the feature anyway lol)

I spent time watching NFL football (at least that's what the Cowboys, but not the Lions were playing). Sports Alert does a very good job at keeping up to date. Normally, the play displayed on the Live Activity was the play that had just concluded. Similar to how the MLB app does pitch-by-pitch in their app. Hopefully this is a foretaste of where widgets are going generally.

Doesn’t work for premier league games or I don’t seem to be able to get it to work. I get notifications etc but the live activities bit doesn’t seem to work on my Lock Screen, even though the league can be followed in the app. The live activities toggle is also turned on so don’t know if it works only for certain leagues within the app

Works on FotMob app which received an update last week. On FotMob you need to favourite a game.

Try Fotmob. Works excellently with premier league. Just press the star icon in matches. I was also able to have 4 games at a time on the lockscreen.
That’s what I’m using now! I am hoping there’s something like this for cricket as well!

Well I dont have a car nor drivers license, and I dont use commute nor taxis. And I dont follow a single organization or watch news at all.

So I have 16.1 and Live Activities enabled and downloaded Sports Alerts. How do I enable Live Activities for a particular game, like say the Monday Night Football game tonight? I enabled alerts for the game in the Sports Alerts app but I do not see how to add it to my lockscreen on my 13 Pro. Only possible once the game starts? TIA

Good example: CARROT Weather already updated to provide precipitation as a Live Activity.

Go to the game in Sports Alert and long press on it. A dialogue will open with the live activity option presented. It’s already there now.

Thank you sir!!! Can't believe I didn't think to long press.... :)

Not super intuitive, to be sure.

Also, if you were to select it now, the live activity may time out before the game ends. I had that happen yesterday with a baseball game. In that case, you just simply restart it.

I was going to try the Sports Alerts app but saw that it has a very steep ongoing price. Is there is a good alternative that isn't costly?
What do you mean by ongoing price? I don’t see anything regarding premium features or memberships in the app.

Edit: There is an ad-free experience but at $5/yr I’d say that’s far from steep.

When I do that I only get Follow Game or Match. I do have Live Activities set in the settings of sports alert.

I saw the $5 price but, the other prices listed is what made me wonder what all that is for.

Surprised ESPN and MLB hasn't had this ready for the post season. This could have been huge

So I have deleted the apple TV app and reinstalled it... still no Live Activities showing under its settings. Anyone can help?

might be wrong but I think you have to wait for a game to be playing on Apple TV

Which sports league? I believe that their qualification regarding live updates for their Watch complication also applies to Live Activities:
currently MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, CFL, NCAA football & basketball teams supported
