I have a theory.

In a few months time, these will be upgraded with Kaby Lake processors. There will be a brief mention of the refresh during a future Apple Key Note event and the closer will be they're $200 cheaper... Faster CPU, Faster GPU, more efficient, cheaper. I don't see how Apple will be happy with their sales figures at these asking prices, especially given the competition. I really do like this MBP and want one, but I'm not happy with the price gouging. Might have to wait it out and see if my theory pans out.
They obviously know that raising the price will affect sales. Lots of people were speculating that they'd drop the price of the MacBook. Instead they raised the price of the Pro. They are going for margin over volume.

How exactly do you define a "pro" machine?

Capable of fast workflow so it can make money.
That thing she did with photoshop you can do with mouse and set up shortcuts in about half the time or faster. When you want to edit your grandmas photos you wouldn't care but when I'm pushing on a 30 months project where every minute counts in the end this is simply not only not acceptable but literally borderline stupid.

Surface Studio is a PRO machine. This emoji pumpkin with a touch capable laptop is a toy. Very VERY expensive toy. Nothing PROfessional about it.

After watching this event, i am happy that i made a hard decision to move over to PC for my creative productivity (digital painting / image manipulation). My new PC kicks ass, a lot of power, upgradable when ever I want. Only not running OSX but Windows 10. I have to say, the OS was a worry for me, but it runs just fine and i adept in just a few days.

Hackintosh it and you're good to go.

With regard to cost, this was my current Macbook Pro from 2010:

MBP 15.4/2.66/CTO
$2,494.00
Part Number: Z0J6

With the following configuration:
•PROCESSOR 065-9134 2.66GHz Intel Core i7
•MEMORY 065-9136 8GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRM - 2x4GB
•HARD DRIVE 065-9140 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200
•OPTICAL DRIVE 065-9145 SuperDrive 8X DL
•DISPLAY 065-9149 MBP 15" HR Glossy WS Display

$2500.

Just noticed that the MBP without touch bar is gimped: It has only two USB-C ports, in addition to a slower maximum configurable CPU speed. F* you Apple.
I saw that too. So they're selling you a slower processor than the 13'' Air. Glad the old models are still available but I think the refub store is going to be the best place to shop.

No, because it's just as silly money in America, and Brexit is an excuse and not a reason to double computer costs. It DOES. OT COST ONE THOUSAND POUNDS for 2 terrabytes of their SSD storage because of 'Brexit'.

It's a combination of both. Apple is a US company and the weakened pound (due to vote for Brexit) will have driven their costs of selling up. Add on the increased US price and there you go.

I think the Touch Bar will be very useful in the future.

It's a faster processor since Skylake is faster than Haswell clock for clock.

Thoughts after watching the presentation:

• I gotta admit the TouchBar is cool, but as an editor, it needs to handle Avid, Premiere, and Davinci Resolve.
• Using AMD again...I'm torn between of trying it out and see if it's better in 4GB form and all its glory...and jumping ship because of no Nvidia GPU.
• Taking away the MagSafe and headphone jack was a HUGE mistake on Apple's part, but adding the 4 USB-Cs is a plus.
• Great, more crap to remember...

Bottom line: Upgrades are cool, but taking away the "essential ports" is just...[speechless].

Why did they end the keynote so abruptly? It almost felt like there was more planned and then suddenly it was lights out. Did they see the unimpressed faces of the people?

(photoshop girl was probably the best part of the keynote)
They'd probably planned to announce an AirPods release date but these have now been delayed

So LG is the new Cinema Display? Wow. I thought 3rd Party displays were just a stop-gap while they developed a clever and innovative new model over... the... last... FIVE... freaking... plus... years. #hapless
It's clear that Apple is not going to make displays anymore. To me that means they are not going to be making Mac Pro/Mac mini anymore. Great ready for the quiet "discontinued"

I beg to differ. I've had guys from Redmond come straight out and tell me that because they have to make Windows work with SO many different hardware manufacturers it's almost impossible to solve all the issues. I wish them luck with their Surface products though.
I work on a DELL Precision T1700, running Windows 10 Enterprise w/ 4 monitors (3 -1920x1200 & 1 - 2560x1600). This machine is only 1 year old and works like a charm. I have the original MS Surface Pro w/ Windows 10 Pro, which again, works like a charm, never have any issues with it, even for being 4 years old. In fact, the upgrade from 8 to 10 was easy and I have not looked back. I have a Custom built gaming machine, running Windows 10 Pro, this was an upgrade from Windows 7 pro, again, no issues gaming on that machine. Now, in the family, 3 different Dell laptops, the oldest a Dell XPS 17 w/ 3D monitor, running Windows 10 Pro (upgraded from 7Pro), again no issues and is used every day (left on all the time). The other 2 dell laptops are the kids throw away $400 machines we bought them a few years ago, upgraded to Windows 10 Home, while a little slow (thanks to the 5400rpm harddrives), they still work flawlessly. Every machine in my office where I work, 5 developers all running Windows 10 Enterprise (including mine listed above) no one is complaining. All our customer support staff running windows 10 and two of them using a Surface Book, again, no issues.

I will agree it's tough to program an OS for different hardward, but in my experience, it's not the OS that seems to have issues, but the DRIVERS to the hardware itself that causes more problems. I will also agree, that the MAC OS has less to worry about with it's CLOSED System/Hardware specs, it's easy for APPLE to dictate what hardware is in their products and so is easier for them to create the drivers and make sure they are stable.

Take it for what it is. I am in no way against APPLE's hardware, I just prefer a PC or an APPLE.

Over under for third party MagSafe dongle 1 week?

These new laptops are great, they are going to look even better crashing down onto the floor of your office. I seriously want Apple to explain removing MagSafe. In their explanation, they are not allowed to use the word "courage" or "thinner"

Something which really ticked me off about this event: Tim going on and on about the iPhone 7 / 7 Plus and how wonderful it is, then showing the new software only available for the iPhone 7 Plus and showing photos....... There are people out here (like moi!) who are still WAITING to get their hands on an iPhone 7 Plus!!! I'd love nothing more than to be able to send in wonderful samples of the wonderful photos I've been able to take with my new iPhone 7 Plus.....when and if I finally ever actually get one. It just rubbed me the wrong way, the whole thing about that. This was a Mac event, they should not have even bothered talking about the iPhone 7 / 7 Plus at all.

Totally agree! They didn't mention how great the Macs were when they were launching their new iPhone and watches.

Wow, this place is full of cry babies.

The funny part is that almost all of you will still buy it.
When the 2012 design was first announced (thin as hell, SSD only etc) my 2009 MBP suddenly felt antiquated in so many ways. Weight, thickness, storage, speed, graphics, the works.

That's not how I feel about my current MBP after watching today's keynote. Not by a long shot. It's more than snappy enough for what I do with it. I always use a mouse so the larger trackpad doesn't impress me. Nor does the touchbar. I'll take physical Esc+volume keys over that thing any day. My Apple Watch unlocks it, which is one step less than touching the fingerprint reader. So no, I won't buy one, unless mine is stolen or broken beyond repair.
