I saw that too. So they're selling you a slower processor than the 13'' Air. Glad the old models are still available but I think the refub store is going to be the best place to shop.

Why does no-one on Macrumors understand a f**king thing about processors but are nevertheless more than willing to claim their opinion authoritative? They put 15w processors in the MBA but 28w in the 13" rMBP. Even at a lower clock speed the higher power processor would outperform the lower by a wide margin.

Thanks for the specs, I'll have to research that a bit more. No problem with removing bloatware. Thoughts on the ThinkPad X1 Carbon? :D No major video work, just some, and love the portability. I WAS waiting for a new iMac to use on the side, but might just get an old refurb. Open for options right now :)
You are welcome.
I don't have experience with the X1. The thing that you need to remember, for video work, windows laptops are not the best for one very important factor. Issues with the gpu assisted rendering etc. You will be better off with a desktop PC if you require GPU rendering.
But if as you said you don't really need that much power but prefer portability, as long as you get a skylake (or newer depending on when you buy it) CPU with at least 4 cores (that is 4 cores 8 threads, not 2 cores hyperthreaded), you will be fine. Just make sure to get at least 16GB of RAM. You will probably won't need more.
In terms of hardware I am quite satisfied with Lenovo laptops. I wouldn't say no to get a new one next time I get a laptop, but as I have a thing against Windows 10, I probably won't buy one.
But since this is you...Lenovo will be fine. I would suggest XMG first, but Lenovo is fine.

PS. FU MS.

It's a combination of both. Apple is a US company and the weakened pound (due to vote for Brexit) will have driven their costs of selling up. Add on the increased US price and there you go.

No, it is an excuse, but think what you want. Apple has massively increased prices purely for more profit, not because of Brexit because if it was, it would not be increases the like of which they have done.

ALL usb-c on this new machine is an obvious cash grab,

looking at the side of my 12" rMB, it's clear that its only thin enough to support that port

on these 2016 redesigns, it seems there's more than ample room for non USB-c ports

Lol, please.... feel free to extrapolate your estimate of profits made from a few cheap-ass adapters, vs $2k computers.
That is a RIDICULOUS assertion/assumption.

Anytime they have to rely on multiple presenters repeating the same selling points of a single new product, it's apparent they really haven't much of substance new to offer. The genius has indeed expired. Too bad. I guess I'm stuck with my 2008 iMac, 2010 MacBookPro, and 2015 MacMini for the foreseeable future. The "amazing", "awesome", "incredible", "fun?" touchbar really doesn't do much for me. Frankly, I don't use my keyboard so much like a virtuoso that I need a single control strip of icons that lets me use "both hands" simultaneously. I'd likely end up staring at that strip/bar and watching carefully where I put my fingers that I'd miss all the wonderfulness of the retina display. The enlarged touchpad is likely to be as much of a curse as it is a benefit - especially to those of us who have larger hands and already have to deal with accidental touches when typing with our wrists resting on the computer.

Oh dear. This keynote was an absolute joke. It seems that no one has emptied the lint trap on Apple's Reality Distortion Field generator since Steve's untimely passing. So sad for Mac.

I think the Touch Bar will be very useful in the future.

In Maya I have about 40 different shortcuts and I NEVER look at the keyboard when typing or working.
I have to actually look at it, press something to show more options since many apps rely on F keys at all times and without a actual button I will have to look at what I am pressing. This is as backwards and time consuming as it gets.
You might not see it but if each hour of work will take away 5 minutes of peeking and trying to locate the icon then at the end of my 30 month project I loose a LOOOT of time and have to pay a lot of money to people that work on it too.
In just one year I will loose circa 6 days, multiply that by 25 overpaid designers, programmers and other people and just imagine how those 5 minutes an hour effect the final bill.
And all I have is a small shop.

This is a massive difference.

Hackintosh it and you're good to go.

Nah, to much trouble around the corner with that concept. Hackingtoshes are for fun. I need to work on it. W10 is doing a great job and is a nice clean looking OS. Its not like OSX. But on the same time they are not that far away from each other. I am going to abandoned the Apple platform. My iPad is getting old (iPad3) and will be replaced by a fast other tablet. I also moved over from iPhone to a Samsung which is doing just fine to for half the Apple price. I was very Apple minded. But discovered that there is more (and better).

I was hoping for iMac with GTX 1080M, 64GB RAM and 2TB SSD.
Something that can compete with mind-blowing M$ Surface Studio.

What I got?

Touchbar (so I can have controls on screen duplicated on keyboard, yay).
60% more graphics performance (crap + 60% of crap doesn't even match current medium end desktop cards).
Weird SSD transfer mambo-jumbo (like in all netbooks Apple is using their own standard, which makes replacing SSD impossible - only two companies are manufacturing compatible drives and prices on those are sick).
Mad prices. Apple was always expensive but now it's a bad joke. There is nothing "amazing" to pay for!
No desktop rig.

I'm truly disappointed by this event.

Well then. I suppose I'll be looking at the XPS15 for my next laptop. This is the most disappointing keynote I've seen in the 10+ years since I bought my first PowerBook. If Adobe would bring CC to Linux I'd be perfectly happy to continue building my own workstations.

Why did they end the keynote so abruptly? It almost felt like there was more planned and then suddenly it was lights out. Did they see the unimpressed faces of the people?

Yeah, I noticed that too. People were clearly unimpressed. And that abrupt ending? I seriously thought "Hey shouldn't there be a 'One more thing' here?", i.e. a new iMac and/or MacPro.

I can't imagine Apple seriously kills their desktop line. Maybe kill one of the three (iMac/MacMini/MacPro), but not all. They are still making money in that segment, with their usual insane profit margin. So my guess is that they couldn't get the hardware update done in time. Maybe we will get something new before the end of the year via a silent release?

Thoughts after watching the presentation:

• I gotta admit the TouchBar is cool, but as an editor, it needs to handle Avid, Premiere, and Davinci Resolve.
• Using AMD again...I'm torn between of trying it out and see if it's better in 4GB form and all its glory...and jumping ship because of no Nvidia GPU.
• Taking away the MagSafe and headphone jack was a HUGE mistake on Apple's part, but adding the 4 USB-Cs is a plus.
• Great, more crap to remember...

Bottom line: Upgrades are cool, but taking away the "essential ports" is just...[speechless].

There's a headphone jack.

Amen. I'll hang onto my 2012 Mac Pro until I make the switch to Linux and a new Xeon workstation next year. Thanks Apple, it's been fun the last 14 years.

I can state new Mac Pro's, iMac's, and display's have been waiting in the shadows. I posted this explanation yesterday but will trim it down as it's a read.

Intel's constant delays of "assured" CPU releases benched new Mac prototypes. Numerous delays prompted the decision to release new MacBook's before the holiday season. Updated desktop systems will be released next year as some models require Intel's improvements in integrated graphics while other models will offer professional level BTO options with dedicated GPU's and server class CPU's. Refreshed displays with possible dedicated GPU's have also been developed. Waiting for CPU and GPU advancements has been a hurdle for production cycles, most notably the "X" nomenclature replacing "E" and "K" CPU's.

Skylake-X and Kaby-X
In June, Intel announced ditching the E and K nomenclature in succeeding the Broadwell-E chips with the introduction of "X" for its Skylake and Kaby Lake processors. Unfortunately, constant delays meant benched Mac's. Primary interests were Thunderbolt 3, improved integrated graphics and 4K+ support, Xeon E7 v4, etc. We held back as Kaby Lake was on track for a Q2 2016 launch with "X" variants in June promised no later than Q3.

In August, Intel announced Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X would be shelved until late 2017. Some close to the situation claimed Cook channeled Jobs' level of anger as Apple began seeing declines waiting for Intel to get it together. Rumor mills suggest a possible move towards in-house production for crucial components (CPU's) while introducing high-end dedicated GPU display components with new production lines.

* Addendum: Regarding the Mac Pro and Xeon E5 v4 vs E7 v4.

Xeon E7-4820 v4 processors:
  • This microprocessor supports multi-processing, which allows multiple processors to be installed into multi-socket servers to achieve better overall server performance.
  • More CPU cores on the Intel E7-4820 v4 help to process many simultaneous threads or processes.
  • Power consumption of the E7-4820 v4 is lower.
The E5 is uni-processing only and handles fewer threads with higher power consumption. Comparatively, it makes more sense to use the E7 v4 with an updated Mac Pro.
