I'm thinking they learned their lesson last year of releasing 2.0 and the new iPhone at the same time. My guess is we'll see 3.0 released end of May to give about a one month buffer to the new iPhone. Just a wild guess.... sooner would be nice. :)

A guy from Palm is on CNBC now bitching about how they are stealing eveything from Palm.

He's just bitching because he knows this means Palm is going to lose business because of this. Sadly, it's Palm themselves that forced Apple to bring these awesome updates to us (by being competitive).

Spotlight looks a little like the card UI in Pre. Also stereo bluetooth and Youtube subscription and notes sync and....you get the idea

Well done Apple. Fina-freaking-ly

Free to 3G, original iPhones can use (does that mean we have to pay?), $9.95 for Touch (let the whining begin).

How about regular people, not developers? They’re going to ship it “this summer.” It will be a free update to iPhone 3G customers. It works on the original iPhone as well, so that not ALL the features will be available (like MMS and Stereo Bluetooth) on the 2G iPhone.

Damn. I'm not upgrading to a 3G though. I'm waiting for the next generation.

“As a bonus, we’ve enabled it to work on the original iPhone. The hardware’s changed though: MMS and A2DP won’t be available on the original iPhone.” iPod touch users: $10.

Awesome so far, but the thing I wanted most of all was for just ONE freaking streaming music app like Pandora to be allowed to run in the background, battery life be dammed. Please please please make that "one more thing".

It can and does - use BossPref after jailbreaking your iPhone. All applications can run in the background. I have been running applications is the background for some time know with issues to speak of.

D

I'm excited even as an iPod Touch user, lots of really good announcements. All this stuff makes me much more likely to get an iPhone eventually.

But my iPhone already logs in automatically at hotspots for me?

What am I missing?

With 2.x you had to look up your username and password, remember it (no copy/paste), then type it into the login page each time. This was a pain in the butt.

I expect with 3.0 it has something like devicescape built in, which will notice the login page and automatically feed the right settings to it so it works seemlessly.

quote engadget - 11:27AM "What about the rest of us? iPhone OS 3.0 will be available this Summer. A free update to all of our iPhone 3G customers. And it works on the original iPhone. Now the hardware has changed between these two devices. For instance, A2DP and MMS won't be available on the iPhone 1st gen. It's also available for the iPod touch... for $9.95."
