Ridiculous claim on your part of course.

Because $99 is not a lot of money. Because if someone who wanted to contribute something useful could sell it, with Apple handling all the details of it, meaning it would be very easy for someone to create an inexpensive app.

Nothing wrong with a $99 fee for developers to cover Apple's basic overhead for managing such things.

It certainly is not going to relegate it to toy status, as for any advanced applications it will be a complete non-factor.

It might limit the publishing of incomplete or half-hearted apps, that is true.

$99 isn't a lot to be able to publish in the app store. It is a lot to be published at all.

And review my "sole gatekeeper" argument to catch up on why I think this is a problem.

The app store is great. The entrance fee is perfectly fine. Being the only way to publish at all is the problem.

People have to whine about everything on here.

Me? I'm pleased by all this. Good things are coming.

haha, true.
I was actually going to say this is the first time in a long time that everybody seems happy with an Apple event.

Now I have to go back and Jailbreak my iPhone. I was really hoping for something today. @ :apple:

I almost unjailbroke my ipod. Luckily I was too lazy.

Cross your fingers that somehow the applications built with the SDK find their way to installer.app.

Sigh, Apple, will it really take another 4 MONTHS?

Show us one place that allows you to sell stuff that keeps only 30 percent. And you get the best possible publicity - your app is directly available on every iPhone. You reach every single potential customer, without advertising, word of mouth, spam emails or whatever.

In addition, I think there is a very good chance that Apple will actually give you 70 percent of the revenue of all copies they sold, not 70 percent of the revenue that they tell you about.

If you still think 30 percent is high, what about these deals advertised here on MacRumors where a package of 10 Mac apps is sold for ridiculously low prices, like 10 percent of normal price? How much do the developers get there in your opinion?

Most wholesalers rum on gross margins far less than 30% as their business models run on leadership through sales volumes and economies of scale.

Not to shoot apple down, they are seizing a unique position they are in just your comment is a little inaccurate :)

It's been a long time since the last paradigm shift. This is going to be so huge that I'm just sitting here with a silly grin on my face.

My family's convinced that I'm about to suffer a stroke :D

<sigh>Christmas in March, who'da thunk :)

<rolling up sleeves>Now where did I put that Hillegass book.....

I don't quite understand what the iFund is. What is it? A fund to provide independent developers with some type of compensation for for their apps, if chosen?

What "Dev Program" are you referring to? ADC Membership?

"You can join the developer program to test your app on the iPhone and iPod touch and distribute your app -- to join the dev program costs just $99"

Agreed. This is a monumental shift by Apple and I say bravo. Now please just give me my stereo BT and I'll love you forever Mr. Jobs. :D

Nominal charges my ass, jailbreak is here to stay I guess. I'm sure they'll be a way to just easily add them like it is now, except they'll add the SDK apps.

I'm really curious as to what that means, hopefully one of the press members asks that.

You have to pay $99/year to get Microsoft's XNA SDK for 360 and Zune.

an sdk for a game with high-definition graphics, a high powered processor, xbox live integration, and support for multiplayer is a bit different than creating an sdk for a small, handheld, flash-based device, and a simple touch screen. not to mention creating an xbox live game available for download by 18+ million people at a higher price than a simple program that took a company about 5 days to render for a lower price. (thats not even taking into consideration, the zune half of it)

Q: What will happen if someone does a VOIP app?
A: We will only stop VOIP over cell networks, but not WiFi.

Nah, it's a really smart way for VC's to be sure that they'll be first point of call for business ideas/software.

This is gonna be like the heady days back in the last century before the bubble burst -- but with a welcome dose of realism.:)

Well that makes the decision for me...no iPod Touch for me, ever. I'm okay with the reasoning behind Apple charging for every software update but I don't think I want to pay that much each time and I'm sure I will want to because so far the content seems very valuable. So far as in including the 2.0 update to come in June.

Can't wait to see what goodies those Devs come up with. The freeverse games already have gotten me uber siked.

And as for the iPhone 2, I guess it will be here around June at the earliest. Its far away but there's no way I'm settling for a 16gb with all these possibilities on their way. 32gb is a must for me now. Apple please please release one in june :)

No. It'll cost you $99 to put your apps on iTunes. This is reasonable, because Apple has the costs to set up the infrastructure to PAY YOU. The SDK is free and can be downloaded at any time.

And what about developers who write freeware apps? Nobody's going to be PAYING THEM. So will they also be charged the $99 bucks for the privilege of giving away their apps?

nice

Edit: oops, someone beat me.

X2 though!!

Wait... so in a few months, my iPod Touch could potentially be a VOIP device?

And a sanctioned one, at that?

SOLD!

... at least, until the iPhone is released in Canada.
