no camera on touch...

So, no camera on touch, for whatever reason. But does the nano camera take stills? I don't see that it does. Anyone see that anywhere? I was ready to buy the 64 GB touch, but I was really hoping for a camera and maybe a drop to $349. I don't think the same product with just a capacity bump is worth $399.

And having a 3.2 MP camera would have been good enough to take some photos that would look decent on a computer and if you wanted to print them, they would be fine as a 4x6 or a little bigger. Adding more MP as someone said won't matter. Getting a better lens would, but I have that in my standalone cameras. I just wanted something that would take decent photos and have great apple integration with iphoto. My phone doesn't fit that. Pretty sad.

Maybe they will release these features in a future update or maybe a 3rd party will as an app

I do believe I read somewhere that new API's are available that will let developers access the camera, so yes, 3rd party apps could be available soon with "special effects".

Wow, just wow.
I would bet 1 million dollars they discussed canceling the event.
It looks like there were production problems with the camera Touch, why they wouldn't update their flagship player is beyond me.
As Comic Book Guy would say, worst "event" ever!
"Customers have asked us to expand the headphones you can use with the shuffle. New headphones will come out and all have the controller for the shuffle."

Ummm, no they haven't. Keep dreaming.

Anyone who is buying "beats" isn't using a shuffle.

This will be know for what wasn't shown more then what was.

1. No Beatles (I could care less, but this would have been special today)
2. No camera for the Touch.
3. No update for the Classic (at least they didn't kill it).
4. Nothing for iPhone, sorry, when an incremental bug fix patch to the OS is your lead off, you got troubles.

Now the Nano looks to be something that could be huge for them, so I give them that.

I have one word for it, Meh.

I'm guessing adding something like HD Radio, or cross fading (something I have been begging for years) is out of the question.
Throw up another sales chart, Phil.

Is your favorite sports radio station an AM or an FM station? If it's an AM station, you're SOL.
That is a bummer. My Nokia phone only has FM as well. But to answer your question, I have favorite sports channels on both frequencies. So I guess I'll have to listen to the FM one. My favorite is on AM though. That is a bummer but the FM one will do.

so now iphone software is not really 3.1. it's actually 3.1.1. plus, new ipod touch (32GB, 64GB) can do voice control just like iphone 3G, 3Gs. it's only new feature on new ipod touch. I don't know it will be working with old touch by helping 3.1 software. but I don't think so.

....is itunes 9 finally 64-bit?

Think about this before you ask for it. It's a design trade off. Going 64 bit allows an application to access a LOT of memory, more than 4GB or RAM but the trade of is that the application itself become larger because now that all those memory pointers need to be twice as long, you pay a bit for the larger memory space. So the software engineer has to ask himself which is best. The answer usually depends on if the app needs to access large amounts of data. I'd say VERY few people have iTunes library so large that the index is more then even 1GB

Of course the marketing people could step in and just tell the engineers that "most consumers think more bits is better so put in more bits wetter it makes sense or not, 64' makes for hot ad copy."

Didn't catch much of it live but it doesn't look like I missed much. New iTunes, new Nanos, and whatever else.

That FM radio feature -- whoo hoo!!! I'd been up nights awaiting it.

Yeah, 'twas a mixed bag. Some nice points -- mainly the iPhone OS (and hopefully a fix for the infamous app icon issue; hinted at in the 3.1 notes) and a few other things. The rest of it, eh, well, there's always 2010. :)

Heeeeyyyy, dit anyone notice the absence of social stuff in iTunes 9? I could have done without facebook integration etc. But a LastFM thingy would have been cool. On the other hand, LastFM is in some ways a bit like Genius.

An iPhone costs waaaaaaaaaaaaay more than $199... or even $299. Factor in the subscription..

With a touch you now get the same specs and independence of a carrier..

You are missing the point. I'm not in the market for a music player with that little of capacity. I have over 40g of music I need on some sort of player. My iphone doesn't hold that. My old ipod doesnt hold that, and I certainly shouldnt pay over 200 for old technology just so i can have 160 on a classic.

I'm not talking about subscription price, I'm talking purely about the unit itself. If i had things my way I would have a 64g iphone. That's a different point though. So your argument of an iphone costing more based upon subscription price is irrelevant

a couple things i noticed just looking around apple's website:
-battery life of new ipod touches dropped from 36 hrs of audio to 30 hrs of audio
-for those who haven't upgraded to 3.0 yet, the price of iphone OS 3.1 dropped from $10 to $5

Are there new 1GB shuffles coming too?

Than I would suggest you to state your point more clearly in the first place. I wasn't the only one that misinterpreted it.

Is the camera lens on the iPod nano on the other side of the clickwheel, where you would normally have your fingers? WTF? :(

Glad I didn't sell my 8GB touch thinking something new was on the horizon - seeing that I don't need 32GB of storage space, this was a complete waste of a keynote for me (if I am correct in reading that the faster processor only comes in the 32/64 models).

So no camera/GPS/compass means no augmented reality for iPod touch, probably for the foreseeable future :(

..saving videos from mail..

Great! That was annoying.

Wow, that new Nano is really cool, especially for the price. Up until they brought that up, it was looking like all that was changed in iPod land was colors, haha. FM is a really great addition for a lot of people.

Music & app sharing! That awesome; can't wait to use that between my wife's and my libraries; especially my apps fo her, since I have a bunch and she doesn't

So, was I the only one really hoping for Nora Jones to come out playing her music on a brand new tablet rather than on a guitar?

So, does anyone know anything special about OS 3.1 besides an updated Genius and non-destructive editing for recorded video?

I'm sure the tethering hack is gone, so I'm holding out...

Also, be sure that every little feature added in to the iPod lines will likely make its way into the next iteration of iPhone. I'm looking forward to those special effects and integrated FM radio, among whatever else is designed for the iPhone exclusively.

The Touch has been behind the iPHone in a few hardware features before. Lack of Speaker for one. No mic input either I think until a year later.

Sucks tho I wanted a camera in the thing. And now I feel like I should have taken advantage of the free ipod dealio with a purchase of a Mac.

New ones are faster.

well one thing is for sure. It was a surprise for all of us. months of rumors, so called leaks and speculation yadda yadda. SURPRISE!!!!!!!! iPod touch is getting jack! like you thought for updates :p :(
