Oh I know how this kind of thing happens...someone who is responsible for this has it on their calendar, they leave the company, new replacement doesn't know anything about it, and it lapses.

I may have seen this play out many times throughout my IT/Software dev career....
Gotta have a shared mailbox for these things that a whack of leaders are attached to - we see it happen a lot in our industry space too, gets kind of wild when someone forgets to renew an SSL or a domain name.

Like many here, I got frustrated with LogiTech's bloatware and looked around. I've been using BetterMouse since Oct 24 and it is great. Paid (less than $10 for a lifetime license), but well worth it.

Also this is a failure of their design in my opinion. Their app is awful. Seems to be in a mouse so expensive they could spare just a tiny bit of onboard storage for settings, so that the app doesn't constantly have to be running.

I think you’d be surprised by how many F500 companies run into seemingly small things like this that turn into large problems. As @chrono1081 mentioned, sometimes it’s the resource that is out, or the responsibility that was shifted and never accounted for. Happens all the time across all orgs within IT and out.
I'm not surprised, but having being there, all the times these small things are due to general sloppiness. And most of times there are people who care and try to do things properly but their efforts are brushed aside until they give up and blend in.

This doesn't make sense to me - why does the cert need to be continually checked for the local software to keep working?

I was wondering about the same thing. At first I thought that maybe they had accidentally revoked their expired certificate. But then I read their FAQ, which states that "[t]he certificate that expired is used to secure inter-process communications". Now I'm thinking it probably wasn't the developer ID certificate, i.e., MacRumors may have misunderstood.

I was going nuts last right reinstalling, deleting files and changing permissions. This was before the updated installer was made available. Do better Logitech.

This is what happens when you outsource to low skill IT workers in India. Companies don't learn, you get what you pay for!

Why does an already installed (verified at install time) software stop functioning because of something the developer forget to do?

What happens if a company goes out of business, then Apple can just stop already installed software from working?
That's why Apple's insistence that developers have a $99/year dev certificate is so horrible for the industry.

I dont want to rely on an online service to be able to do a back click in Safari from my mouse.
Exactly, why in god's name does a mouse need a certificate just to operate with some customization's! Make an option to not have to use the certificate period...

Not sure why I love this type of mishap. I have multiple Logitech devices here but never installed their Options+ app.

I use Steermouse in place of the Logi software and it works just fine with my MX Master 4. It does not support the haptics stuff, but all the buttons work.

Same here. I’ve never used Logitech’s software for customizing these mice so I’m unaffected. This does raise a slight concern though. If the developer of SM discontinues support and their certificate lapsed (say, they retire or pass away), then I assume this same problem would occur.

Not for a company this size. This should not rest on one person but should be on a calendar/ To do list. This is not a mom and pop shop, Logitech is worth almost $13 billion. I have not used my PC in a few days so I am assuming I will have to do some fixing for my mouse. Not angry about it, first world problems. I do wonder how this slipped though.

I work somewhere far far bigger than Logitech. While in theory this shouldn't happen it absolutely does. It's pretty horrifying to see how many things like this are just...forgotten about.

It's crazy that your hardware could be rendered useless (or gimped) if a dev doesn't keep on top of their certificates.

What happens when the dev goes out of business? This wasn't thought out very well.
That's a very real possibility, and it has already happened. Even Apple's old OSes have outdated signatures (some, but not all, have been re-signed).

I believe you're supposed to be able to use expired software that's already been installed. I have plenty of expired apps which work file, but then again I do have the security settings turned way down.

You can re-sign them yourself, but it's only a matter of time before Apple cracks down on that, as they move macOS to be more similar to iOS, which has zero way of running software not "blessed" by Apple.

Got bitten by this personally at work for licensing. Talk about grinding your business to a halt. We have multiple roles (not people) to ensure it never happens again how.

I had to restore my settings from the Logi back up to get everything back and working.
What Logi backup? Time Machine? Are the settings in a Prefs file or Application Support?

I noticed the problem yesterday and tried to reinstall the software but I think I failed and then had other things to do. So not sure if my settings are saved?

You can run apps without any certificate, macOS just complains.

I uninstalled Options+ a long time ago. It was laggy and I hated the nags for using it's AI. Like, seriously! Why do I need to use generative AI though a mouse options app?!
