Why does Apple want to make these mats at all? It is technically and aesthetically just nonsense (charging time, aesthetics, larger form factor than mains adapter and cable). This is where the Apple marketing team, which I otherwise value, failed completely IMHO.

Not so. You missed out ergonomics.

if you were to have a mat occupy a bedside table and the ability to lay your multiple apple products on it without a heap of cables will actually look and operate better for such a task for example.

It’s a nice design, has a clever landscape viewing option, and takes up less desk space than flat charging mats. I’m still going to wait until Apple comes out with their charging thingy before diving into this market, but this is definitely an interesting option.

How is this different from wired charging?? There's no difference between plugin a charging station or plugin the iPhone directly. Plus there's no fast charging. This whole wireless charging is totally ridiculous.

Docked wired phones have to be upright.

70$ and does nothing that’s isn tweet than my 15$ generic Amazon charger. I don’t understand this pricing.

I'll just stick with plugging in the tiny lightning cable and putting my phone in whatever position I want.

Call me when wireless charging doesn't need a mat at all.

Wow, I completely forgot about the legendary AirPower charging mat until I read the last sentence of the article.

Wirelessly sending electric power through the air isn’t a good idea for your health I guess.

Wireless charging is only useful for me at the bedroom. No speed is needed, and easy to pick up. Other than this, I don’t find it useful given the slow charging speed and that it heats up the phone.

Dropping an iPhone into a wireless cradle is significantly less finicky than trying to align the lightning connector. Makes it much easier to grab your phone, check something, and put it back.

Why does it need to be fast charging when most use these at bedside for overnight charging? I have the USB-C to Lightning when I want a quick top off, but wireless charging is great overnight, and eliminates cable wearing over time while making it easy to grab and go in the morning.

That's exactly what I thought when I read the "in collaboration with Apple" line.

Has Apple ever before designed something and then let another company brand and sell it as their own?
This has been answered earlier.

But it got me thinking. Old Apple (pre-Jobs return) spun out companies to do products they didn't want to do under their own name. Examples: General Magic , AlphaSmart/Intelligent Peripheral Devices, etc.

Now, the Logitech Crayon. Is that just licensing some Apple technology to do something similar?

I love Logitech. They have the best marketing department.
Don't have to worry about supply and demand studies.
Just charge $69 for every product they release.
But, sir, it only costs $10 to make.
You're Fired!

I have the Samsung wireless quick charge stand. It charges in portrait and landscape.
Guess what I paid for it? $25.

Walmart sells the TZUMI 5 watt charging pad for $10. One is by my bedside and one by my recliner. They work great. Every morning the 8+ is at 100%. So, I’m $50 ahead?

Looks bad and WAY OVERPRICED.
Guess Logitech wanted to be the next trillion dollar company

Price difference in this category is usually driven by the materials and branding.

While both yours and the Logitech brand charger likely do the identical thing, to believe that they're also identical in quality might be a huge stretch.

More manufacturing crap causing world pollution. Seriously, I can't believe the rubbish that companies make. Are humans so lazy & obese that they simply can't plug in a iPhone themselves or simply pick one up???
All of this disgusts me. Landfills full of junk because of this greed!
Convenience does not equal laziness. What the hell does a wireless charging mat have to do with laziness and obesity? It is nice to just set my phone down on the nightstand and have it charge. In the morning it is nice to not have to reach over with both hands to unplug it. I managed to do it the "old fashioned" way for years, but this is more convenient.

Why does Apple even want to manufacture these charging mats? At least there's some excuse with lightning cables with that being their "proprietary" connector. Even if those string cheese cables keep breaking all the time.
As it turns out, when Apple makes products they tend to sell which makes them money. That is why they want to manufacture them.

Today's announcement shouldn't affect Apple's plans to launch its multi-device AirPower charging mat before or in September.
1) Apple hasn’t changed its plans; the release is planned before or in December, contrary to the rumor you cite. 2) Since Logitech hasn’t released a 3 device charging mat, why would this product have any effect whatsoever on Apple’s plans for AirPower? That makes no sense. 3) According to the press release, this is a Logitech/Apple design. Your headline is not accurate.

Great device expect for those who usually upgrade our iPhone’s every year, I’m concerned it will probably be incompatible with newer iPhones in a few months.

I like the look, it would be nice for a desk charging stand. But for $79.99 (price seems to be wrong in the MR article) it doesn't seem worth it. Looks like it won't work with a future iPhone X Plus either.

Just the fact that you eliminate the act of plugging and unplugging a cable is well worth it. If you have ever worked on electronics you know that the solder joints (if it has any and not a plug) on the port that a user plugs into and unplugs from is a weak point and prone to failure.

Apple has done a good job at designing this part of the phone to be strong but it is still a better idea to eliminate that interaction if possible or at least lessen it when you're able.

And speaking about batteries, it is better to slow charge a battery than it is to 'fast' charge. Read up on the battery university site if you want more info on how batteries respond to various input levels.
