On the Logitech product page it says
"POWERED works with non-metal cases up to 3mm thick that don’t contain magnetic parts. Apple silicon and leather cases are compatible. iPhone 8 Plus requires case with a fully open bottom."

Why would the 8 Plus need an open bottom case but the 8 and X don't?

Why does Apple want to make these mats at all? It is technically and aesthetically just nonsense (charging time, aesthetics, larger form factor than mains adapter and cable). This is where the Apple marketing team, which I otherwise value, failed completely IMHO.

Because wireless is just easier to top off ? I just place it down on my mat whenever I'm home and rarely have a depleted battery.

More manufacturing crap causing world pollution. Seriously, I can't believe the rubbish that companies make. Are humans so lazy & obese that they simply can't plug in a iPhone themselves or simply pick one up???
All of this disgusts me. Landfills full of junk because of this greed!
Bs. Cables get in the way, they are messy, they break easily. I break my cables once every two months or so. I absolutely loathe them. Cable-less devices are a godsend for people like me.

" Are humans so lazy & obese that they simply can't plug in a iPhone themselves or simply pick one up???"

Why take a car/train if we can walk? Why buy food if we can hunt our own?

If you're a body builder I asume you take no suplements or vitamins, you dont go to a gym and or use exercise equipment as all these are inventions for "lazy and obese" humans.

I wonder if it could be a height issue, meaning the charging coils in the iPhone 8 Plus and on the POWERED charger wouldn't line up.

Seems poor design, if this is the case.

How is this different from wired charging?? There's no difference between plugin a charging station or plugin the iPhone directly. Plus there's no fast charging. This whole wireless charging is totally ridiculous.

Because apparently for some people the lighting connection is too complicated or too much work.

What the heck do you do with your cables to break them once every two months?? Youre not supposed to swing on them or something.

Or maybe you're not buying good quality after market cables... I went to a good name brand one with a multi-year warranty and thing has been solid for years now (whereas the apple ones did break in about 18 months).

Oh and your analogies dont at all compare to pluging in a cable.

Can we stop calling things with wires "wireless"?

No! Wire-less refers to the output. The charger gives away energy without using a cable to transmit it. There are no wires involved between the iPhone and the charger.

Looks nice and useful to me; I don't really understand the negative comments. I'll probably pick up a couple of them.

Also, the headline is quite misleading. "Designed in collaboration with," which is what the Logitech press release says, in no way suggests that this is an "Apple-designed" product, and I have good reason to think it is not Apple-designed.

I agree that regarding cables, the more expensive the better.

My analogies are an example of everyday items we are so used to we forget they are luxuries. Have you ever stopped for a second and tought we can go to the supermarket at pretty much any time we want and get access to pretty much any meal from over the world? We can get anything from ready-to-serve meals to skinned, chopped and boneless meat to canned sauces and pre-cooked vegetable mixes, and so on. That's a luxury. So is a Wireless charger. They both help make our lifes easier and more productive.

I had an iPhone 6 that got a bad charging jack. I would have loved wireless charging on that.

If it's one thing I've learned about these chargers it's that it only works if you can put your phone down. Unless they're going to bed, people are reaching for it every minute.

You’re right, that’s definitely a side Note when you use wireless charging, it’s obviously only effective when it’s placed on the charging mat/dock. I prefer to use my iPhone when it’s charging while connected to the lightning Charger. I also do see the convenience of having a charging dock when you just want to set it down perhaps in a darker environment without having to search for the lightning port. Really what the consumer is paying for us simply the convenience of putting the iPhone on a mat or dock with ease-of-use.

Logitech has been upping its design game. Good for them! This is a "nice to have" item, but my phone stand functions just fine with my iPhone X plugged in with lightning cable. Since most of the time my Mac mirrors everything useful about the iPhone (thanks to iMessage and the Phone handoff), and I have an Apple Watch, I don't interact with my iPhone much during the day.

One way I have found it to be useful is if I'm talking on it with headphones, then I just set it on the charger while in use.

I think you have this backwards. Electromagnetic induction charging will help keep crap out of the landfills.

Unlike the 30-pin dock connector, the Lightning connector, and USB connectors that seem to go obsolete every few years, the Qi charging standard works on nearly all brands and models capable of wireless charging, it has been around for a decade, and is likely to be around for a much longer time.

So with a charger like this, people can use many brand devices and many generations of devices. And they won't need to throw it out when the connectors on phones change yet again.

I bought a cheap iPhone stand and an equally cheap QI charger, which I stuck to the stand with some thin double sided tape.

It does everything this Logitech does, for the sum of circa £10.

He's got a point, BodyBuilderPaul

Looks fugly!!!!!!!

Design in collaboration? Same people who designed the Apple iPhone battery pack?

And won’t cases be an issue? I would have to see it in person. Maybe Apple just asked their polished aluminium designer to go to town.

This has been answered earlier.

But it got me thinking. Old Apple (pre-Jobs return) spun out companies to do products they didn't want to do under their own name. Examples: General Magic , AlphaSmart/Intelligent Peripheral Devices, etc.

Now, the Logitech Crayon. Is that just licensing some Apple technology to do something similar?

Apple's been involved in several collaborations lately actually, such as the LG 5k monitor and Blackmagic eGPU.

The new LG Ultrafine displays.

The HP-branded iPods back in the day

Thanks, everyone! I appreciate the answers to my question!
