I'm very glad that the team from Romania medaled in women's gymnastics. They have such a great tradition in the sport, and I'd hate to see them end their streak -- a team medal in each of the last 10 Olympics -- something no other country has done.

I was very impressed with the USA women in the gymnastics team final. Thoroughly deserving winners, and seemingly likeable people to boot!

Ah, okay. Clearly the people who were discussing this on the radio programme I was listening to weren't fully aware of all of the facts. It's good that you cleared that up for us.

It would seem the US media care little for facts when it comes to the Olympics.

I have to say I think the US team have come accross as a really nice bunch of friendly down-to-earth people, they have been great to watch. Genuinely humbling. Unlike previous years when many have been incredibly arrogant and pompus. Nice to see decent people representing you country, rather than that dick politician that came over here waving his penis around. Go USA, I hope you can reach the top of the table and beat china :)

Totally agree. They are focussed but at the same time very well rounded individuals, who obviously enjoy what they do as well as representing their country. I found myself cheering the US swimmers on earlier :)

Well you Brits are very good hosts.

Group hug ?

:D

P.S.

I would love to see GBR vs. USA in the women's football final but that can't happen.

Of course women's beach volleyball gets a lot of attention due to the nature of the outfits and the attractivenes of the athletes, but what Misty May and Kerri Walsh are doing is truly incredible. In two straight Olympics and thus far into their third, they have never lost a set! We're not talking about just winning games and getting a medal, they are flawless, perfect, undefeated.

It is just amazing to think that for over 8 years now they have won every time they set foot on the sand. I so hope they keep the streak alive and end these games with another gold medal.

well, lo and behold, we jinxed these guys... :(

Yep, the US swimming team are just incredible.

The annoying thing for us Brits is that in the sports we are currently best at (cycling etc) only have a few events and medal chances. But in swimming for example there seems to be about a million different variations!

Swimming is way over done in my opinion. Its moving very fast in water, how many events are really necessary? Anyway, I'm still proud of how good our swimmers are doing!

I heard on the radio this morning that the way people say which country is 'winning' is different in different parts of the world.

Here in the UK (and I understand most of the world) countries are ranked by how many golds they have won, using silver and then bronze to distinguish if two or more cointires have the same number of golds. Apparantly in Canada and the US it is simply how many medals each country has won? Is that true?

If so it makes a big difference. Take Beijing 2008, China got 51 gold medals which is far more than the next highest at 36. But the USA got 110 medals v China's 100.

Personally I don't like either system. The first means a country with a single gold beats a country with 100 silver medals. But the second doesn't reward each appropriately. Surely the best way would be with points- eg 10 for gold, 5 for silver and 2 for bronze.

Track cycling starts today :)

I wish surfing or rugby 7s (rugby league would be even better) were in the Olympics. Rugby 7s will be apparently be back for 2016, but I don't see surfing making it for a long, long time. :(

I didn't realise that the medals table was worked out differently in the US. Whilst I understand your reasons for calling for a points system, I think that the way the UK and most of the world do it is right, it should go off who wins the most golds. The Olympics is about being the best. So silvers should only be used to distinguish countries with the same amount of golds.

Either way, we Brits should be incredibly proud. For the size of our nation we won a massive amount of medals in Beijing, and I think we will come fourth again this year. GO TEAM GB.

So the women's football semi-final will be the USA vs. GBR or CAN.

Do you brits get drunk and fight as much in woman's football as much as you do in mens football ?
:D
